Ford Eco Boost

There have been reports of problems with the tubochargers. There have also been a couple of lawsuits filed over this. If it were me, I would go with the 5.0 V-8. Not much difference in milage or horsepower vs. the eco-boost V-6. The eco-boost has a little more torque than the 5.0 V-8. The 5.0 is a very good engine, same engine they put in the Mustang GT's, just de-tuned a little.

Why buy a V6 that gets the gas mileage of their V8?

Many are disappointed with their fuel mileage.

One of my sons friends is having a new motor put in his at 12,000 miles.

I would seriously consider some other engine option.

My Neighbor, Dad, friend and myself all have 2011 screw ecoboost. All of ours have been great no problems and we all have 25000-65000 miles on them. We all have got 20-21 mpg on long road trips in the heat of the summer. It loves the 100 degree days. In the winter the best I will get is around 19mpg. I pull a 6000 pound 24' boat and a 20' enclosed fishouse no problem but the mpg will be around 10-12.

There you have it...a V6 that gets 10-12 mpg pulling. My truck is pulling something all the time. Might just as well have a big V8.

JMc...nothing wrong with a GM or any of the brands. They will all fill the bill if you choose the proper motor, transmission, GVW. Too many are living a pipe dream that somehow mysteriously a V6 is going to get v6 mileage and big V8 pulling power...just not possible. That V6 will be shot at a 100,000 miles if it even gets to that pulling 6,000lbs all it's life.

Brother in law loves his S.crew ecoboost. Similar mileage as the above poster (low 20's on the highway) When towing his 17 ft. ski boat with an ATV in the bed of the truck he manages 16mpg on the highway. I frequent F-150 online forum every now and then and haven't heard of any real issues with the ecoboost engines, at least no more than other engines. I think for towing it's a no brainer, the ecoboost generates more torque with a broader torque band.

The ecoboost engine will still be chugging just fine at 100k miles. The torture test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tEqwXrqzH4

If you aren't towing then it's a toss up as whether you like 6 holes or 8.

I owned a 2005 f-150 with the Triton v8 and it would get 9-10 mpg pulling the fishhouse.. My fishhouse has been pulled by Chevrolet diesel and it was only able to get 11 mpg and a tuned gmc diesel on was able to get 12 mph. The ecoboost will tow 11300 the 5.0 v8 10000. They have the same transmission but the eco has 420fpt vs 380ftp in the 5.0 v8

I haven't had a 1/2 ton truck in nearly 30 years. We pull to much to have one. I will say this, I wouldn't be caught dead cruising hwy speed with a 1/2 ton truck with 11,300lbs hooked to it. Actually I would I'm afraid be caught dead. 1/2 ton trucks don't have tires or the weight to be doing such a task. Drive that truck into a corner with such weight and you may find yourself using up all the blacktop and then some when those side walls roll over. Not that long ago, 3/4 tons were only rated for such weight. There's a reason for that.

To each his own. The technology is better in pickups today with trailer sway control and advanced trailer breaking. For a guy hauling around a bobcat for work all day you should have a 3/4 ton pick up or bigger. But for the average guy towing around boats and toys a ecoboost is a great option with more than enough power and you can tow a bobcat if you have to. I think you should take one out for a weekend and you will be surprised. I will even let you beat on mine next time I'm in Sodak.

I have two good friends that each have one. Their just grocery haulers. Neither pulls more then a light Alum. fish boat. That's 1/2 tons are for.

Agreed.

The towing payloads given for each truck are given for a reason. That is the max the engineers designed them for. Now... obviously if your going to be towing to the max frequently you will want the trailer towing package with tranny cooler etc.. Heck, you would want that as well with a SuperDuty. But to say a half ton pickup can't tow it's maximum load limit frequently throughout it's life span is ludicrous.

Watch the vid from the link I posted on the previous page. Granted it's a Ford sponsored video, the stuff they did in that torture test actually happened.

I think your friends need to get bigger boats!

Birdshooter, I was going to post this video as well! My buddy bought one and we love it for hunting, hauling, towing, etc. You don't tow all the time and if you need one truck to get you to work during the week and haul your stuff on the weekends, I can't think of a better engine. The economy is there, that is why Ford is putting 4 cylinder eco-boosts in smaller vehicles as well. The other guys will be playing catch up for a few years on this one. I personally will be buying my next truck with the eco-boost in it.

may want to wait a bit to see who drops a smaller diesel in their 1/2 ton trucks

Mike, Not sure I want a diesel. I live in Minnesota and the clod weather is not the best for diesel fuel. Also with the price higher than gas why choose diesel? If the mileage is about equal? Unless I am missing something? Why do you say wait for a smaller diesel? Do you know something I don't, fill me in buddy!

If you run premium unleaded as suggested by Ford the price difference is moot. A diesel engine will have a longer service life generally and in a half ton pick up should get very good mileage. My dads GMC has the 412hp/ 420lb ft 6.2l gasser and gets a respectable 19mpg hwy. Any of those hair dryer fords want to have a tow off?:D

You might be waiting a looong time for that. With Ford, they have committed themselves to Ecoboost and is now offering 3 different ecoboost engines (1.6, 2.0 and 3.5) for their car/suv and half ton truck line.

I just traded my 09 F-150 with 5.4 engine on a 2013 F-150 S.crew with Ecoboost a few weeks ago. Couldn't be happier with the new one. More power and slightly better mileage so far than my '09.

You wouldn't even know it was a V-6 by listening to the engine. Feels like a V-8.

If you can hold out till the 2015 F-150 which should be out sometime in 2014, you will be able to treat yourself to an entirely new re-do of the truck. Most notably a 700 pound weight loss, which should increase power and gas mileage even more.
