Mixed bag hunters

I plan on going to Missouri to hunt some Bob's this year. I would also like to go to western North Dakota and hunt Pheasants, Sharptail and Huns all in the same day. I think im going to pull off the Missouri hunt but im im going to be a dad for the first time October 26th........ So ya thats going to make it a little hard to get away for any amount of time this year. I know bad timing but what do ya do.

Congrats on the baby Trevor! That is really piss-poor timing but I bet you weren't thinking about roosters at the time. Good luck with everything

My list is a combo of species ,but is growing still. Should have taken more time to hunt when I was stationed on CO. Will be going back soon for Elk again but this time with the boy's & bow's:eek:. Looks like I still got a ways to go on my list.

There's some impressive lists here:thumbsup:

Bagged;
pheasant--plus odd variations in color
ruffed grouse
bobwhite quail
chucker
Hungarian partridge
Eastern turkey
Sharpe tail grouse
Prairie chicken
grey/fox squirrel
cotton tail
jack rabbit
white tailed deer
Canada geese
wood duck
mallard
buffle head
ring neck duck
black duck
some sort of very small diver duck:confused:
ruddy
coot
snipe
woodcock

Dream game;
either a Yeti or a swamp ape--preferably a yeti. A nice full body Yeti mount with a snow habitat scene would look great in the family room. Great conversational piece too:D

Good thread Okie.

I'm very lucky to have such an array of upland birds to hunt here. So far all in their wild state and all behind my dogs I have taken; Ca, mountain and gambels quail, pheasants, chukar, sooty grouse, ban tailed pigeons, dove, snipe, and turkeys.

Still on my Ca list are ruffed grouse, sage grouse (hopefully I draw my permit this year), and ptarmigan.

Abroad I would like to hunt mearns, blue and bobwhite quail, huns, and ruffs in da nort. Also ptarmigan in Alaska and a Hawaii hunt for kalij and green pheasants and francolin. Last would be snow cock in the ruby mountains of Nevada.

Jmac, I have a spot where I can get you on pheasants, Ca quail, and a Rio turkey in the same hunt if you don't have any reservations on taking a flushed turkey.:D

Let's start a hunter exchange program. I can put you guys on lots of quail (all three species I hunt).

Quial Hound,

I have no reservations on shooting them in the Air, at all. Still hope to get together with you this fall. Work permitting.

Hunter exchange program hmmm Thats One hell of a good Idea.

I see break out lists showing up for Archery and Muzzle Loaders so:

Archery:
Pheasant (taken in flight)
Sharptail Grouse (taken in flight)
Deer both Whitetails and Mule
Prairie Dog
Rattlesnake
Coyote
Antelope

Muzzle loader:
Deer both whitetail and mule
Pheasant
Sharptail grouse
Prairie Chicken
Ducks
Geese
Antelope
Coyote
Huns

I'm sure I've missed something:D

There was a time when anything that walked, crawled, slithered, flew or otherwise propeled itself across the face of the earth was fair game, but I've gotten over that LOL

Some how I failed to include sharps and chickens on my list.

I would like to shoot an Idaho "grand slam" of grouse in one day, with the exception of Spruce Grouse since there are none anywhere near me.
Ruffed
Blue
Sharptail
and Sage.
Short window since Sage is only open a week, but totally doable with a little luck.

When it comes to sage hens THINK SMALL :)

I've spent 98% of my hunting life in CO only, and bagged:

Elk
Pheasant
Merriam's turkey
Mourning dove
Bobwhite and scaled quail
Blue grouse (Ok, dusky)
Ptarmigan
Sage grouse (Gunnison's, before they were differentiated/protected!)
Canada goose
Mallards
Pintails
Coots
Cottontail
Jackrabbit

I think that's it! Oh, and since moving to AZ a year ago, I've added Gambel's quail. About the only one I'm realistically interested in adding is chukar, maybe ruffies and/or sharptails. Guess i'd have to add moose as well, preferably a CO moose, but I need a lot more preference points. My bucket list only has one item on it - Himalayan snowcock.

I got the fever (again)

I lived in Hildalgo County Texas as a teen. My parents are not hunters by any means, but I had a close friend who was an avid sportsman.
John would lend me his single shot 20 gauge ( savage Stevens) and buy a box of federal #7-9s, then we would drive an half hour NW of Mission TX and chase Chachalaca, White Wings, Quail and Jack Rabbits the size of a large dog.
( Funny thing about those rabbits, when you miss, the rabbit would turn around lost and run back at us for another shot. I was never ready for that shot. I was was to dumbfounded that the rabbit would run back at you.)
I had some good times hunting with my friends in Texas, After I moved to Minnesota I believed that hunting would be a thing of my past Boy was I Sucker-Punched by the 2011 pheasant opener. Then I found this forum, and things have not been the same since. I now have full blown Pheasant Fever and can't wait to get out this fall!

what is ptarmigan?

This is a typical mix bag hunt around here. More quail than pheasants, and we have a few Prairie Chickens.

Here's one from Kansas in 2010. Got one of those that Seternut chases as well.

Nice, did you get the PC pointed during pheasant season? If you did, I am very impressed. They are tough to get pointed that time of year

Steve,

I changed tactics a few years back. I target my late night hunting spots in CRP areas that I know hold PC. Seems to work as I have been fortunate enough to get solid points about an hour or so before sunset. I did not make the trip last year due to the drought. Hopefully that will change this season. I completed the Tri-Upland mixed bag (PC, P, Q) only three times in the same day.
