    i'm surrounded by turkeys

My neighborhood is hot with turkey's lately. My wife even called this morning that she was waiting for them to cross the street before she could get to work. I've never hunted turkey, but have always wanted to. I'm thinking of buying my first call and practicing with the local birds before...

cockleburs + ESS = bad combo

Got Fillmore out on Monday and we hunted hard, probably a bit too hard for her first day of the season. Little gal got torn up pretty good. I trimmed her ears, tail and feathers a couple days before which helped a lot. Biggest problem is her armpits (legpits?) up front. She's got missing hair...

Need to get off the squirrels and back on birds

Fillmore has been getting ansty lately. The walnut tree next door has brought out all the neighborhood squirrels, and it's just one tease after the next. Seeing how the season is just around the corner, it looks like I need to get her back on birds so she can remember what we're really after...

    Broken canine tooth

I have no idea how, but about a month or so ago I noticed Fillmore had broken a lower canine. She seemed fine, but you could see a pink dot in the middle (nerve? root? not sure). Well, I just caught a glimpse of it,and now that dot is black. Vet said they'd have to either remove the whole tooth...

Mac the ESS is bringing down the bad guys!

Great to see an ESS in the line of duty using that nose to help keep our streets safe. Mac the 3yo springer is responsible for $3.75Million in drug seizures! http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/02/22/BAJ01NB43M.DTL

    Cured her poor delivery

Well, I'm not sure she's 100% cured, but it was MAJOR improvement. how you ask? ... we added a second dog to the mix. Unfortunately the other dog is too sticky and just doesn't "get it", but that worked out just fine for Fillmore. She found/flushed the birds, and when sent to retrieve, Hazel...

    First hunt test on Friday

I'll be entering (and viewing) our first HT this Friday. After reading the regs and talking to a couple folks, we're just going to enter the Junior. I know she's got way more drive and talent (at least I think so), but Fillmore's delivery has gotten sloppy, and if she's not playing with the...

    Hawk almost got my bumper!

Took a quick work break to toss a bumper for the dog in the backyard. Just after she delivers the second toss, WHOOOSH, a hawk with a good 3 foot wing span swoops down over head from directly behind me and lands just about where the bumper was, some 20-25 feet away from me. It stands there for a...

Tuf-foot vs mushers secret - help please

Pretty sure I've seen both mentioned on here before. My trainer recommended tuf-foot, but i read concerns somewhere about carpet staining. Are these similar products in terms of pad protection? basically, Fillmore played to hard with my folks' dog. in and out of the pool, chasing each other --...

    Eyes vs Nose

Lately, I've been curious at how good (or bad) the eye sight is for my ESS? When we get together with my parents' lab, that dog will see the tennis ball on the grass 20-40 yards out and b-line straight for it. My ESS wants to hunt and use her nose for it. It's like she doesn't trust her eyes...

28ga question - How do you hit anything?!

My buddy bought a 28ga Benelli Legacy. We went to shoot sporting clays this past weekend... well, I couldn't hit squat with it(neither could he!). Granted, I only shot about 10 shells worth, but jeez. Fine with the 12ga, but just could not figure out how much lead, site picture, or anything...

    First hunt with no collar!

Made it out to the preserve yesterday for some late season birds. Wouldn't you know it, as soon as we park, I realize I left Fillmore's e-collar on her kennel at home. $h*&! I ask the guys there if they can spare an extra, but with the demand for their kennel dogs, they've got nothing left...

Training Wish list for next season

Well, pup's first season is nearly complete. I think we have one more day out if we're lucky. She's done better than I could have asked for, and showed that all the hard work and time has paid off (not to mention her instincts are amazing). Geez, I almost lost it yesterday thinking she was fully...

how tough to house break a kennel dog?

I know of a dog that has been a pure kennel dog it's whole life. My guess is it's about 4 or 5. How difficult is it to house break a dog at this stage in life? It was tough enough to do it with the pup in a condo, I'm not sure I want to go through all that again, but I would appreciate any tips...

hunting in rain with young dog

Might try to get out for a bit this weekend. Forecast calls for rain. I'd like to get Fillmore out for a little work and some more experience. This just happens to be the only time I can get out. Any hints, thoughts, suggestions for a young dog and rainy conditions?

My wallet is a few franklins lighter now

Every morning and evening we walk along the waterfront here. The pup likes to hunt for the resident rodents in the bushes, and run around. Well, yesterday morning she hops into that first bush and jumps right back out sneezing like there's no tomorrow. oh boy. not a true foxtail, but similar...

    Fillmore's first pheasants

What a day! Fillmore got her first birds Saturday. I am so excited and proud. Had a ton of fun. No wind = a little tough conditions, but she did well. Good patterning. First two birds flushed wild, but she hupped at the flush and even the shot. We lightly worked on that drill with just some...

Pup's first season coming up - need last training tips

I've been working with the pup as often as possible. driving that recall with the whistle and remote sits. Her retrieve is now pretty solid, tho her delivery could use some polish. But I can live with that for this year. I don't expect miracles to happen in the next two weeks, BUT, are there...
