Turkey Season

Liked your pic's !!!! do you hit the fall season as well?[/QUOTE
Thanks Bleu, I don't usually buy a fall tag but this next fall I will. I see turkey when I hunt blue grouse every now and then. I've never tried calling turkey in the fall but would like to figure that season out.

I ran the dogs on my place yesterday, and found 2 turkey eggs, that is guess were eaten by raccoons. This is the 2nd time in a week.

I have been seeing lots of raccoons on my game cameras.

What species

What species is this? Shot in Kansas with Bow.

I shot one that looks just like about 10 years ago near rush center. I swear that mine looks like a Merriams but its a just an older rio. Suspect you have the same.

adults

I also have not seen a jake all season..

pastor john killed a decent tom for the area i hunt, but the other 4 birds that have been taken have been jakes. out of probably 60 males i have seen this year without using glasses, only a few have been toms. my camera's show a few toms but mostly jakes. go figure!

cheers

what type

looks to me like most of the rio's i shoot, just checked the hide of the rio i shot recently and looks the same' in a few more years it won't make any diff. there will be only one type and that's a cross, can hardly tell or believe now

cheers

My Rio that I took near Atwood years ago has bronze or light tan tips on the fan and no white at all on the fan or back. I hope they do not get all mixed up. You would think that that would of happened here. But, I don't think the rios do well in the mountains. But who knows what a cross would do. There goes everyones grand slam!!! I am not a Turkey hunter, although I buy a tag and go .... Nice to get out and I will take a Tom or Jake if I know for sure it is a jake. I have called some in, I have sneaked up on some and have had some just come by me when quiet laying out in the Yucca's as they chased hoppers. Just gives me another season to be outdoors. Some guy's are hard core and hit every state they can. I enjoy the meat and the gobbling at sunrise or just before. I would not trade it for upland hunting though.

scored

shot one the other day, had 5 beards on him, weight was 20.5 #'s. 9" beard and spurs were sharp and just over 1" long, watched him breed two hens before i ended his fun. used my 14 ga. at 24 yds. earlier i shot at a tom using a bullhead out of my recurve, missed the damn window, it stopped the arrow about 6" in front of the bow, scared the everything out of me and the turkey. the bird was at about 12 ft. gotta practice more

cheers

jakes

while some here have complained about seeing few jakes this year, earlier, that's all i had been seeing, the last four days i just spent in n. w. kansas, never saw a jake, all i saw was mature tom's, go figure. didn't see a lot of turkey either. my buddies the quail showed up every day, they are fun to watch and listen too. still more crowing than last year and sightings of pheasants is up from last year also, alas, not so much to get real excited about but the trend seems tobe up. the area really really needs rain and wheat is starting to get stressed and not growing much

cheers

Finally!

Well it finally came together for me Sunday evening in Paola. After a weekend of prom for my kid and 3 baseball games I got a pass for an evening hunt. So I got set up about 6pm in a horse shoe shaped field bottom along a creek. I heard birds roosting there a week earlier so I had an idea. My only concern was the mud road that was 150 yards out from me. After getting settled I mad a couple of calls and got a gobbler to respond behind me several hundred yards. Well called for a few minutes and then shut up. Well about 6:40 he showed himself as he [popped out of the wood line to my left 90 yards away. Oh let me not forget that I mounted my go pro on my b mobile gobbler decoy that is mounted on a remote controlled rotating stake. With that said I panned the camera that way and he was a coming:)
Well what I thought was a sure thing quickly went down the tubes when about still at 70 yards out from me and half way from the road I hear a sound getting louder. The noise kept getting louder and the gobbler keep getting more nervous. Well then I see a truck pulling a trailer coming down the mud road and the gobbler runs into the woods.:( Well I kept my cool and stayed still for 5 minute then yelped once and he gobbled back from 10 feet behind me:eek: Frozen like a statue for 5 minutes as he worked his way by me towards the decoys. Be busted out just to my left at 20 yards and I let him have it. Best part is caught it all on video and will post a link to my youtube shortly. After 2 years and many failed attempt's with the B Mobile cam I finally got it done!!!
