How many birds each season?

Been a fairly active member here for 15 years? Quality of the content has changed, IMO…tone is much different, IMO…still some good stuff…
Brother keep posting your hunts I love reading them. I don’t get out near like I used to but love reading about everyone’s hunts. Sounds like a little jealousy to me. On here since March and wants you banned for living your life your way. Hope you have three easy ones today

Cattle and birds have a great symbiotic relationship. Well managed grass is beneficial to both birds and cattle. A silage pile is a great winter food source. If you really want me to think of another way to make money other than pheasant hunting that will mean 200 acres that have been dedicated to wildlife production will be in corn, beans, wheat and cattle. Those 200 acres could be rented for $30000. I can't afford to donate that much. The people who hunted here disagree with you as we are almost booked up for next year already. I guess I will go with the people that have been here. Have a fun season.
Dennis quit responding to this jackleg, funny everyone has an opinion on another man’s land and money

I’m definitely addicted to this bird hunting thing…have been since I was a young kid…the dogs are the best part…my middle dog did some great work yesterday, unreal feeling…

Absolutely, more than harvest is watching a dog get into a zone on birds. As I sit here looking at my Lab at 12 years old it makes me a little sad. He was a monster from 3 till about 8 or so. Really about 5 great years is all you get. His heart is still in it but the body is unwilling. Funny watching guys faces when they would see him work when their only exposure was a couch lab. Not unlike most of the other guys with dogs on here

The district conservationist I work with from the NRCS wants to put cattle on my WRP easement in lieu of burning it in order to regenerate it…grazing by cattle, at the right time, is a healthy thing for prairie grass stands…I believe bison were present on much of the prairie for a lot of years, as were sharptails and chickens.
I hunted on some friend's property years ago, about a half section with a creek down the middle. He grazed cattle on it but was smart and didn't when it was wet. It always had good cover. When he retired he sold it to the state which made it a WPA. Now 4 years later 70% of it is choked with cattails so thick its hard to hunt anything but the edges and it seems to stay much wetter. His rotational grazing worked really well.

I am still working, but when I am able healthwise, I hunt almost every saturday and sunday and most of the holidays, might take off Christmas and one of the 4 days I get over Thanksgiving. I would use some time-off to hunt more but I can't eat them fast enough to deal with any more birds in my possession. I hadn't kept a count until 2 years ago. I was keeping some tail feathers from the older birds and it seemed I was collecting quite a few. Two years ago I shot and found 57, last year 60. I had resided to not shooting as many this season, wanting to get my hunting partner more opportunties. I had been shootin the majority of the birds we harvested. Well, my old GSP didn't make the limited season that I had envisioned, and now have a 5 month old pup to wrangle and then a disk injury in my back has sidelined me...so much for my season this year. This past week I was able to stand and walk somewhat, so I went out and blocked for my buddy today. Took a 20 gauge, for the weight (or lack of) and did get shooting, but no birds. Not used to them coming over so fast! I have to stand with most of my weight on my right leg, so my stance was all screwed-up, so that wasn't helping things, but I had a blast!

Hard Core…chicks dig that

I wouldn't say my chick "digs" it, but thankfully she "tolerates" it. She is a good woman, tolerating me, my antics and hobbies. There would have been some hell to pay if I would have messed my back up hunting yesterday. I told her I just HAD to do it...glad it worked out, I feel no worse today. Next I would like to get this new pup out in some light cover and hopefully some bird contacts. I suposse I should make figuring out my back issue the top priority. Don't take your health for granted, so easy to do, until it is not there.

Yes, so true. I value mobility and being pain-free more than anything. All the $ in the world means nothing if you can’t do what you love.
I'm well past the pain free age! Got me a new titanium knee in February and it worked pretty well first trip to SD. Stepped in a fence line gopher hole with it and it held up ok but was a scary moment.
Glad you are getting better remy and good advice on not taking our health for granted.

30-50 birds. Hunt SD 8-12 days, hunt NE and Iowa on weekends as much as possible. The more we hunt it seems that my buddies are getting more competitive on who got the bird. Gotta shoot fast and be the first to yell “ Gott’em”. Back at the truck I just say I got in on that one to stroke egos. That’s why hunting alone if fun, less pressure to shoot fast, makes for better shot and you know if you got the bird or not. I’m a man, I’m in my 40s, my hips bother from high stepping in thick grass now. I sleep good the nights after huntin.
What I do, is I tell my cousin he got the bird, even when I know I got it.I need to keep these guys interested.
