Do this now or loose more rights!

This is the same response we had from the US "animal rights" activists. First it was breeds of dogs. They vilified certain breeds, and irresponsible owners, and got metro areas and to ban them and regulate breeding. Now becomes a short walk to control all breeders, gundog breeders will be next, they don't like hunters anyway, true worthy goals.....now if we can get guns restricted, It's a perfect world as they envision. Better stop them now.

If you don't believe it. Call a gun dog breeder in WI. They did there already. I want to be able to buy a quality dog from whom I want when I want. These types should be hanged for treason. All of UPH should be signing this petition and join AKC.

Never ends does it? We're in this fight for the rest of our lives guys. The next generation will have it even worse than we do.

Next they'll make it against the law for small farms to breed cattle and other live stock and they'll do it with tricky, slick tactics. O&N touched on where they'll go from there.

I debate these people all the time. They think with emotions not logic or facts. Not to mention many have little regard for human life. THEY ARE NUTS!!! --REALLY--

Anyway, I signed this and will forward the link to everyone I can.

Thanks for filling us in FC

Signed and passed on.

This just makes me sick to my stomach. I do not have 6 breedable females, but know many who do. Do they pump a pup from them every heat cycle? NO!. Do they sell them to pet shops?NO!. These fr*&^$n bas^&#d$, will ruin the foundation of many great gun dogs with this BS.

Who determines what a breedable female is? I'll tell ya who, the responsible breeder. The last 3 females I kept or bought, I sold... Sure I could have bred them, but I did not because of certain faults. These so called hobby breeders they refer to are the bread and butter of the fine gun dogs we have in every one of our homes. And I will be damed if I have to settle for a news paper dog from some back yard crap, just because a great pup across the country from some one I know can't be sold to me unless I drive across the world and waste time, gas and work. This one really has me worked up. My legislators will be getting an ear full, LOL:mad: Right now, I have a retired girl that just hunts, no more mama. 1 bitch that could have pups, but did not this year, and 1 started 1 year old bitch. Sure she could be bred, but should she? NO. who says so? ME! not them... I have 2 female pups to be here soon. So now with them will they be considered breedable to them at 10 weeks because they are not fixed? They stirred up a hornets nest here I tell ya. The USDA who plants Canada wild rye in your CRP to kill your dog. Dip $h!)s...

Good read.

Outside the Johnson County Courthouse in Warrensburg , Missouri , stands a statue dedicated to a Foxhound named Old Drum - commemorating a famous trial held there in 1870. Old Drum was shot and killed when he wandered onto the neighboring farm. His owner’'s only recourse was to sue the neighbor.

A young attorney,– George Vest, who later became a United States Senator – was retained by the owner. Senator Vest'’s closing argument at the trial was just 400 words, eloquently in support of the value of a dog and included this thought: “The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. He is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.”

Shortly after he spoke, the jury found for his client and awarded him the maximum allowable damages of $50 – which was a lot of money back then. In addition, Vest'’s speech established the phrase “"man’'s best friend is his dog".”

We all know firsthand the devotion Vest spoke about, it is a large part of what makes us ardent supporters of dogs. But today, there are forces at work that do not look at dogs like we do. And there are those who think breeding should be controlled to the point of extinction.

I believe the greatest characteristic we possess is our unyielding dedication to the preservation of each of our unique breeds. It is through a combination of our responsible breeders committing to a never-ending quest to produce dogs true to type and healthy in body, mind, and spirit, coupled with all of you personally committing to always do what is best for the dogs, that has allowed the people associated with the American Kennel Club to claim the mantle of the dog’s defender from Senator Vest for the last 128 years.

When we come together like this, we always have much to discuss – some about our sport, some about business, and some about our governance. All of those are good and valid topics that require discussion and will only serve to strengthen our organization. I believe there is no unsolvable problem if we face it wisely, creatively, and courageously.

But we know our calling is for much more than the job of simply overseeing our business – it is most importantly, the responsibility we each embrace to, and for, the dogs. By recognizing that, we can together establish a beachhead of cooperation to create new initiatives that grow ownership of purebred dogs, grow our ranks of participants and supporters, and grow our voice in all things pertinent to the preservation of our breeds. We must act quickly and with great purpose to accomplish all of that. And we must start right now.

While we are faced with many challenges, none is more immediate than the proposed federal regulation of our responsible Fancy breeders. Undoubtedly you have heard about the proposed rule changes to the Animal Welfare Act, which regulates the selling of puppies in the United States . Currently, our Fancy breeders – like you and I - are exempt, but the new regulations would treat each of us like a large-scale business. What does that mean for you? Breeders who maintain more than four females biologically capable of having puppies and who sell a puppy to just one person at a distance, would now be regulated as commercial breeders under United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations. Think of the impact that would have on the preservation of our low-number breeds.

Our AKC Government Relations team met with the USDA on our behalf to get clarification regarding the language in the proposed rule that we will use to help shape our comments. We have identified dozens of critical issues that must be addressed by the USDA before they act. There are strong forces supporting these onerous r
egulations, making it more imperative that we create not a new balance of power, but a new understanding that the public wants the breed of dog they want, and those dedicated AKC Fancy breeders must be afforded the protection to not only survive, but prosper. Without our Fancy breeders, it will only be a matter of time before our breeds that have been preserved for hundreds of years, will become extinct. While that might be perceived as an unintended consequence of overzealous government regulation, I believe it is a quite intended consequence sought by the groups that challenge dog ownership every day.

Because we are the AKC, the USDA will pay careful attention to our comments. But we can maximize their attention through our individual support. Each of you can help achieve that. We have the opportunity now to unite our forces and clearly communicate a single, positive message for change. We have created a petition in support of the comments on the proposed regulations we will be submitting to the USDA and placed it on the AKC website. I ask that all of you join in and sign the petition. And then I ask that each of you circulate the link to every person you can think of to rally support for a most necessary outcome.

As Ronald Reagan said, you and I have a rendezvous with destiny. I believe it will be the one we make and not the one some others make for us. The most important single characteristic that defines a great organization is the desire to succeed that overwhelms all obstacles. I know we have that desire.

To those who believe we cannot come together and accomplish that, I say: “ You don’t know us.”

To those who doubt our voice, I say: “ You will hear us.”

And to those who love dogs as much as the jurors in Old Drum’s case, I say: You must join us.”

Sincerely,
Alan Kalter, AKC Chairman

If this is important to you sign it. Also call or write your congress and senate. Call the USDA, when the labor dept. was trying to make it illegal for kids to work on our own farms there was such a fuss made that they had to back down. Make a fuss and above all vote this fall. If you don't like what they are doing, get rid of them.

Signed. Having read this I have not seen the rationale for supporting this legislation. Is it to crack down on puppy mills? If that is the case then I can understand wanting to do something, but this legislation looks like flock-shooting to me.

Is there a larger issue that responsible breeders and those who would protect dogs from lives in absolute misery can agree on? What would that legislation look like? Because what I have seen on this site is a group of people who love and respect their dogs and who would recoil in horror at what happens at a puppy mill. And be justly outraged being lumped in with anyone who operated such a travesty, as this legislation would suggest.

Daisy, all good?'s I don't know. The only thing I can think of is a revenue tool, another money grab perhaps. But it could be the fact that special interest wishes to screw with your hunting these fine animals as well. It just stinks. I suspect the later, because if they want tax dollars from selling a pup or finished dog then they could just say so. In MN dog sales are taxable. You by law have to pay sales tax. I am registered with the state and do so. I don't mind. Also pay and keep track of income tax. I am willing to put them in public any day to show there is no profit. I like the sales tax. I get food tax free just like a farmer. They are considered livestock. The mentality of them doing this to some one like me and millions of others is asinine. It costs them money not me. I save more on tax exempt items then I pay for cripes sake. But it's the law so I abide. I think very few do or even know. And no one is enforcing it any way. I do know one person who had to pay back sales tax when found out somehow. So we have an assumed name in MN, and pay both sales and income tax. Roughly 125$ to the feds, and about 2-300 to the state, sums it up. If I want to show less I will deduct all the training birds, entry fees and so on, mileage, hotels and what have you. Right now, it is just vet and food bills. I just can't figure them out. One big house full of idiots, and pencil pushers, but no doers. They just don't want you to have a life either, the commy bas&%$#s. No pups this year, I wonder how they will like the 40,000$ kennel building loss. LOL

just signed it with pleasure, my 3 dogs must has known it as they all three just walked over to me and each licked my wrist. guess in there own way they knew sumpen was going on and wanted to thanks me. who says dawgs aint smart. :)

I can see the USDA wanting to crack down on people having puppy mills. but this will target totally the wrong people. To tell you you can not buy or sell a dog to someone unless they come to your place is ridiculous. If this passes, I guess I would have less field trial wins, placements, would have not finished 4th in the Nation in puppy points 2009. I would not have been in the 5th series of the National last year. And I would not be running 2 dogs, or perhaps even going to the National this year. Because I would not have been allowed to buy River!!!. And I most likely will not drive 30 some hrs to buy a dog. Thanks to those who are joining AKC! To the rest, if you love quality birds dogs. Sign it.
