best dog food for hunters?

Sadly to say, not always...

The problem as I see with some of those dog food sites is mostly it's just someone's biased opinions. Rarely do you see the person or person's qualifications for making such reviews. Marketing has a powerful effect on dog food sales. What looks good to us humans as far as food MUST be good for our dogs... HUH!! In the last 5 years or so these Boutique foods have become quite popular because of the ingredients being labeled as "Human Grade". Not saying their bad, but are they really better? especially for the price they ask?? Truth be known companies like Purina and Iams etc.. have a long standing tradition on spending millions on canine nutrition research to produce a food that is not only proven, but affordable for the average person. The Proof is still in the Pudding. If the food is working it will show in your dog.

In the end, the choice is yours on how much you want to spend.

correct, to each his own, but sports nutrition has come a long ways for humans, some dogs being athletes as well, it would seem enough dog owners are interested for these dog food producers to exist......i have to laugh at your reference to boutique foods, seems you are quite biased with your label, fine, stick with what works for you.

i don't see any reference to human grade ingridients either on the website that gives the analysis.....appears this guy has nothing to gain by recommending one food over another, but then anyone can read a bag as well......with all the crap that is out there in our human food supply, we should all take the time to be better informed consumers, whether it if for us and our families or simply the dog. i for one am glad there are better quality choices for our canines, Purina and others spend a ton of money on marketing, research, well, so they say...but ingridients tell the story....for instance take a look at Purina Beneful......cute packaging, veggies for your dog......look at the ingredients.......pure crap......i fed a bag to my dogs as a test last summer......they couldn't eat enough of it, acted hungry all the time, all filler, huge shit piles in my yard everywhere......Purina should be embarassed to put that garbage on the shelf.

Is it mindless to notice my spaniels withering away on the crap? I used it prior to being forced to educate myself on what GOOD dog food is.It ain't Brewers rice and corn.
Purina set the standard for marketing dollars spent on an unknowing public.I was one of them.I fell for the Puppy Chow scam and nearly starved a very good pup to death feeding this crap.
I have to call you out on your expert website opinion:

Please educate me on why a website started by a dental surgeon with a major in chemistry and a minor in biology, after the death of his dog due to poor food would have no credibility? Neither TOTW nor Purina nor anyone else are paying him to break-down the nutrition labels on these products.He clearly states the same thing many have stated here,there is no one perfect dog food.

That aside,the first time you can show me a dog grazing in a cornfield,I'll consider myself educated.And kiss your ass.

BTW,a quality dog food can be fed in a signifigantly smaller ration than the stuff that is just going to pass-thru.So it's not as expensive as first glance might make it seem.

My dogs hunted daily from Nov 4 until New Years Day,this ain't gonna happen by feeding them ethanol.

Again,just judge the size of the stool,or better yet,have a sample analyzed by your vet.

As far as Purina, they not only set the standards for marketing. They also set the standards for research dollars spent before any of these other companies. These other companies are riding their research coattails. That being said, Purina makes all grades of food for all levels of consumers. Your dogs didn't do well on it..so be it. Lots and Lots of trialers and hunters dogs do remarkably well on one or more of their products.

As far as my website expertise....never had made any claims that i had any expertise. I was jsut saying that whether it's doctor, politicians, lawyer or whatever; they all have their own agendas I don't believe anything I take off the web and still won't acknowledge those two websites as being unbiases. Now if you know these people personally and have some inside info into their agenda, then by all means take from them what you will. I don't ...I won't

Next, I crap out corn that I eat, sometimes. I know it's not enitrely digestible in most of it's forms. I don't want corn to be the biggest player in my dogs food environment. And please no matter what, I don't want your lips any where near any of my anatomy. I shudder to think of that.

Obviously, I have a large concern on what my dogs eat. I've been through ProPlan, I'm in knee deep with Loyall. If you can tell me how I can afford one of these "better" food on a rural teachers salary with 9 bird dogs. Feel free to fil me in. I'm always thirsty for new knowledge. I need to find the right feedd for the right price.

As far as my dogs are concerned. I'm sure your dogs can hunt 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and mine would be no match in the field for yours. I know that mine would wilt under the pressure and not have a chance. Shoot you'd be better off running your dogs with Shadow and let the real pissing match start.

I really try not to get involved in these dog food threads, especially when much of it is personal preference.

I agree with much of what you have said. Nothing wrong with educating yourself with knowledge as long as source of your education can be trusted. The internet is full information, just that some of it you have to take with a grain of salt.

You said yourself the Purina Beneful did not work with your dogs, hence exactly what I have been saying all along about finding out what works and stick with it regardless of brand. The only thing left is how much you are willing to spend...

Forgot to mention that while Purina Beneful as an example, quite possibly will work for grandma's little lap monster, for a hunting or working breed which have entirely different nutritional needs, I would think not. So selecting not only the brand but the right formula i think is key as well. Whichever feed you select should have a high degree of digestibility, otherwise your just shoveling more poo.

chuckling- up by Hill City last year it was 12 degrees- big field- Shadow and Lizzi first- 1/2 hour lunch and change clothes- Shadow and Choc- 1st one guy was with me- after lunch 3 came with me- back at camp- showed the guy Shadows track- 51.3 miles, 11.08 mph- course it was cold and wet and there was water- that evening Shadow wouldn't eat- wouldn't eat in the morning- stopped on the way back to that field- picked up some bacon- 39.2 miles 10.1mph- on Diamond High Energy

if I was in need of more- I'd go to Purina Pro Plan Performance

Agreed, my vet says they are healthy and he has all these funny plaques on the wall that I do not.

Best as I can tell everything looks good. I will say my blood pressure has lowered and my cholesterol is back in check. Amazing what a good diet can do for ya.

I don't know about stool samples from a night of Heinekin that's a little to high brow for me. But after a night of Old Style or Buckhorn, the report would be... loose and plenty.
