best dog food for hunters?

It seems as though every time there is a thread on this website about dog food it turns into a fight. Does anyone else find this to be really stupid?

If your dog is healthy, keep feeding what you are feeding.

My two springers do better on one kind of food and my setter does better on another, so I buy two brands. They are the best brands EVER and anyone who feeds their dog something else obviously hates their dog, is not a good hunter, and generally sucks at life.

Great post!

I saw that this thread was going in the wrong direction and agree with JMc. Either we keep it civil or us mods will delete the thread.

Discussing dog foods is a no win situation. About as bad as discussing breeds of dogs and which is the best. I think hunter94 has the right idea. Let's switch over to a Heineken discussion. Sure to be a lot more fun! :)

I don't know about stool samples from a night of Heinekin that's a little to high brow for me. But after a night of Old Style or Buckhorn, the report would be... loose and plenty.

Maybe we could tighten it up with a run to taco johns. I had a lab who wouldn't eat a dry corn chip, but put some hot salsa on it he was all in. These frenchies I have now are true to their heritage and eat everything that doesn't eat them first. No dignity.

is on the order of 83%?- and you've been told---

just had to go thru my old collected stuff
Purina Pro Plan Performance= Total Digestibility 84%- Protein Digestibility 89%-
now who's is going to produce more crap

Yes but the dog is digesting brewers rice and corn, not meat, big difference.

Yes,this may be true but the dog is digesting brewers rice and corn, not meat, big difference.84% of garbage is still garbage.I saw the protein, fat and carb breakdown of a dog "food" made of old leather boots, used motor oil and sawdust.Gives great looking numbers, the kind that would make you want to feed it to your dog.I think some here would. Only meat-based foods supply the amino acids required for a dog to sustain life. And where do the numbers you so staunchly believe come from?My guess is from the people who want you to buy it

While I find the commentary on this thread especially entertaining, I think a more interesting subject has arisen that most of us could probably learn from. How does one become able to hunt everyday?

Rancho, this is in no way an attack on you. I seriously want to know and see if there is something I can implement in my life to get on this track.

Just quit your corporate job and move to SD.My biz happens from May to Sept and i have to fit a years worth of income into this time frame.I don't hunt all day, every day but I would guess three weeks or so i hunted all day this year. When you live in pheasant central it's not hard to find a couple hours a day to hunt. This still puts a lot of wear and tear on a dog and they will be affected adversly by even marginal nutrition. It's not a two hour stroll in the park.Windblown canefields here in Central SD and just plain gnarly country in SW SD are dog shredders.

Any job opritunities out there for a young man with a class A CDL and experience operating heavy equipment?

Now were talkin'!Taco John's,now that's good food.My spaniels give it their full endorsement.

I DO apologize if anyone takes it personally! Not my intent. It's just that there is a lot of deception in dog food marketing. No doubt we all have our dogs best interests at heart.I used to have a customer who ran Iditorod every year.He swore that his dogs would starve to death if fed ANY commercial ration as a sole source of nutrition. He collected beaver carcasses from local trappers, boiled them down and fed the resulting gruel mixed with dry kibble. You wanna talk severe duty? I think Iditorod would be the gold standard.

I was probably a kid of about 13 or 14 one winter when our chest freezer went out at home. My dad decided he would unload everything and put it out on the wood pile in the backyard as it wasn't getting above twenty or so that feb. We had geese, ducks, pheasants, quail and most of a couple of deer in that freezer. At the time we had 4 english pointers out in the pen in the back. Well we looked out there the next day to find those damn dogs had eaten most of that food, and ruined the rest. They were snacking on the ice cream when we found them in the morning. Gawd my dad was pissed. I don't think he fed them for several days after that. I had to pick up their crap as chores. They were pooping out bread ties and plastic bag pieces for a week. Funny stuff. By the way Taco Tico is a far better bowel buster than Taco Johns.

Here's a good article on the problems with dog food reviews.Of course it's written by a guy who does...dog food reviews.Take it for what it's worth.I think there is a lot of good info on this site, even if you disregard the reviews as "crap" as someone put it.

his disclaimer sounds just like that of the FDA.....think about it, a huge portion of our human consumed food is shipped into the states from foreign countries.....because it is so damn cheap! fish, some meats and a ton of fresh produce hits the grocery store everyday and we really have no idea how healthy these foods are......we just know they are cheap and readily available......consumer beware.

No doubt.I saw a documentary on fish produced in China. One outfit was growing their fish in the contaminated waste water from an iron mine. One thing i miss about the farm in WI was being able to produce a good portion of our food onsite.
