best dog food for hunters?

Rancho needs to get on GDF and go toe to toe with Ezzy on this food thing.

Saying Purina products are crap is pretty mindless. They've pretty much set the standard until some of these "boutique" foods came out. Of course I'm not saying that TOTW or the other foods he mentioned are bad. but if you're feeding one or two dogs that would work fine. What I'm looking for is a good sound dog food that costs between .60-.70 cents per pound. I'm feeding 9 dogs, 50lbs/week.

ProPlan outpriced me, now Loyall is doing the same.

Diamond Naturals give my dogs serious gas fit and chit fits.

I'll leave the floor open.....suggest away, my main criteria is that the 1st ingredient is poultry of some kind.

And again dogfoodanalysis.com and dogfoodadvisor.com are full of crap.

Is it mindless to notice my spaniels withering away on the crap? I used it prior to being forced to educate myself on what GOOD dog food is.It ain't Brewers rice and corn.
Purina set the standard for marketing dollars spent on an unknowing public.I was one of them.I fell for the Puppy Chow scam and nearly starved a very good pup to death feeding this crap.

I have to call you out on your expert website opinion:

Please educate me on why a website started by a dental surgeon with a major in chemistry and a minor in biology, after the death of his dog due to
poor food would have no credibility? Neither TOTW nor Purina nor anyone else are paying him to break-down the nutrition labels on these products. He clearly states the same thing many have stated here, there is no one perfect dog food.

That aside, the first time you can show me a dog grazing in a cornfield,I'll consider myself educated. And kiss your ass.

I have seen dogs eating on road-killed deer though....carnivore

Feed your dogs all this garbage you want.I'm just trying to help others realize that some of the biggest names in the business, are built on marketing hype.Ever see a Taste of the Wild commercial?

BTW,a quality dog food can be fed in a signifigantly smaller ration than the stuff that is just going to pass-thru.So it's not as expensive as first glance might make it seem.

My dogs hunted daily from Nov 4 until New Years Day,this ain't gonna happen by feeding them ethanol.

Again, just judge the size of the stool,or better yet, have a sample analyzed by your vet.

Cobblestone, don't some of the dog food makers have special programs for kennels and people with several dogs? I would think you could get a break buying in quantity. Maybe by buying a whole pallet. Seems it's getting tougher to find a good food you can buy for 60-70 cents a pound. I think even at Walmart Purina O.N.E. and Iams are more than that. I only feed two dogs and as long as I can stay around a buck a pound I okay with it. But that's even getting tough. Good luck!

PurinaPP lost my business when they started cutting bag size. A bag of dog food is 40 lb not 36, not 34. IMO that is just plain criminal. How many people are buying based on price and not checking the weight. Too many!

Have fed Eukenuba with mixed results. Feed PMI in the offseason, keeps the weight off. Feeding Diamond High Energy right now. Yes there is more waste, but the dogs look good.

I have an uncle who feeds more than 20 Walker coonhounds. Buys dogfood in 1600 lb. lots @ .30 lb , big open ended white bag loaded by a skidsteer. I am sure each dog is eating more than 5 lbs. a week. I have seen these dogs work and no they are not lacking in energy or endurance, nor are they in muscle tone or skeletal soundness. If you have never witnessed a coon hunt, Walkers make Setters and Pointers look like plotters.
Their is a lot of good food out their, don't buy into all the hype. Find something that works, if the dog looks healthy and acts healthy, its healthy.
I do care about my dogs and no I'm not a **** ***, I know how a healthy dog looks and acts, and feed accordingly.

What do you mean, Dog food used to come in 50lb bags.:rolleyes:

I raise turkeys, chickens, guineas, pheasants, chukar and quail off and on. I always have sacks of milo, millet, wheat, corn, sunflower etc. My dogs regularly stick their heads in the feed for a few bites. They seem to prefer sunflower the best but also enjoy wheat and millet. They also love to eat turkey crap.

Something to think about. What did dogs eat in the 1800's and before when there was no dog food as we know and feed today.

Next time you have some sweat potatoes for dinner, cook a few extra for the dog, my dogs loves them! “Sweat Potato Shorthairs”

I give no credence to the opinions and ratings on DogFoodAdvisor.

+1 amen to that....

The best dog food is the one your dog does well on. Coat, stools, energy and general health all rolled in to one. Point being, find one that works well that you can afford and stick with it.

while i agree, it seems that having a dog food analysis would only help one make a better decision....you read the labels on grocery store products, don't you?

Normally after a long hunt I will give my dog half a can of Bud. I get the other half...but only after the guns are put away.

Sadly to say, not always...

The problem as I see with some of those dog food sites is mostly it's just someone's biased opinions. Rarely do you see the person or person's qualifications for making such reviews. Marketing has a powerful effect on dog food sales. What looks good to us humans as far as food MUST be good for our dogs... HUH!! In the last 5 years or so these Boutique foods have become quite popular because of the ingredients being labeled as "Human Grade". Not saying their bad, but are they really better? especially for the price they ask?? Truth be known companies like Purina and Iams etc.. have a long standing tradition on spending millions on canine nutrition research to produce a food that is not only proven, but affordable for the average person. The Proof is still in the Pudding. If the food is working it will show in your dog.

In the end, the choice is yours on how much you want to spend.
