Perfect hunting SUV

I wouldn't mind having a low mile 97 or 98 2dr tahoe with a 2" lift, 33" bfg all terrains and the g80 rear locker. I've always liked the 2dr tahoes.

The 2-dr Tahoe is going to become a classic, much like the 67-72 Chevy/GMC trucks, or 55,56, 57 Chevys! There are some people already collecting them!

Yep, 2dr tahoes are nice trucks. I also wouldn't mind a low mile zr2 blazer.

My '04 Expedition isn't quite that bad. If I hold it at 60 mph I can get close to 20 mpg. 65 mph and I'll get 18 mpg, 70-75 mph and it drops to 16 mpg. In my wife's Edge I can pound it down the interstate at 75 mph and still get 24-25 mpg. With current gas prices on a 1,000 mile trip I can save nearly a "C-note" by taking the Edge. And as long as it's just me, the dog and my stuff I have enough room in the Edge.

only downwind!

I wouldn't mind a Honda Ridgeline or Nissan Xterra

3 years now- 2 4 wheel drive Escapes
took a trip to Crested Butte, Co in this one- 28.1 mpg
drove the other one next trip- 30.999 mpg

last ski trip I couldn't stay awake at 2:00am on Monarch Pass- crawled into the sleeping back- got 6 hours sleep- got to Crested Mountain right when the lifts opened-

I can travel just about anywhere-can load up 4 bird dogs- sleep in the back- get better gas mileage than most on the road- and I can use it to do most anything

btw- OP- you can and will get stuck in anything
this winter I had both our 4 wheel drive Escapes on this sand road stuck- bulldozer pulled us out
What engine do you have? How does it do with 10% ethanol mix? What do you think of the new ecoboost? I have a explorer know do you think I would like a smaller size? I guess you put the rear seat down for dog boxes I dont have to with the explorer.

3.0- 4WD-I drove one with a 4 cylinder- not much pull in that engine- any gas works just fine- we always put the cheapest stuff we can find in-

don't have to have the rear seat down- do because it makes for a lot of room to put stuff- that and why not- there's nodody to sit there

couple fellas I know bought the F150 EcoBoost- both are getting 18mpg - not very pleased with all the Hype on them- hoping after the new goes and it loosens up they'll get better- I just smile

How do you get 4 dogs and that dog box in with out puting the seat down. Also how do you get 10 mpg over the explorer with the same eng? Theres only 1500 lbs different in weight. The gov fueleconomy rates explorer at 19 escape at 22 and your getting 30?

Had the rear seat up- measured- built the box- I like to see fully out the rear window- they don't have room in the 2 compartments to wrestle- they lay down and ride comfortably- you should measure your Explorer and then post the size- my 2 seem to have a large space- Escape is deceiving

you believe the Gov estimate mileage- what does that estimate really mean

not sure about your Explorer having the same engine- is yours the 24 valve
also- at 65 mph what rpm is yours running

find a flat road- no wind- fill to the brim- drive like you want the best mileage possible- go at least 70 miles- top off the gas-

have you ever installed a vacuum guage on your intake manifold and driven to see where it reads the best

the one Escape has info center- tells you when and where the engine is cruising- the 2009 likes 69 mph

think if I put 1,500lbs in either Escape I'd get poorer mileage

Ford hasn't improved their gas mileage since the late 70's. My dad's new 1978 F150 2 WD with a 300 inline six got between 18-19 MPG back then.

Not sure about that- ordered an 81 F150 4X4, 6 cylinder with the 5 speed manual overdrive- 196,300 miles I sold it-

from OP, Ks to Bemidji, Mn it wasn't to hard to consistantly get 22.7 mpg-

vacuum guage on the intake manifold;)

Ouch! My gmc with a push rod v8 gets 20 and its an 05 so no vvt. Best ever was doing 98mph (gov limit) from Salt lake City to Las Vegas, 22.5 mpg. Not a flat drive and I was loaded with gear.

I read an article when the Eco boost came out. Three automotive writers tested it out. The first two babied it an averaged mid 20s mpg. The third kept it in the pipe the whole time and managed like 8mpg. He said being in the boost was quite fun though.:D

Well, I am finally accepting the inevitable and going to give up the F150 (It's for sale, fyi) and in order to try and retain some shred of my dignity I am opting for the Subaru Impreza wagon. It gets about 27 and from everything I hear it has room enough for a couple dogs, some shells and a scattergun. In the long run I will be able to afford more trips, but I dread the idea of taking that thing back into some of the places I hunt grouse. More walking, I guess. Hey, tht would be even better gas mileage. :)

Ive found the Subaru to be hard to get in and out also they are costly to repair! The FORD Explorer and Escape are more reliable and much better cars. Remember that its COSTS PER MILE not MPG! FORD did not take taxpayer MONEY. Reward them!!!!

How much gas can you buy for the trade difference you are paying?????

After much wrangling I got a good deal on the wagon. I said goodbye to the truck (first time without one in 22 years). I am already counting the days until I can get my next one. The things we do for the family budget. Now, since the wife insisted we could not afford to keep the ``Fun-50'' I am eagerly awaiting the chance to bring home my deer in the back of her minivan. Heh.

``Sure honey, those blood stains will come out and that smell will subside in a few months...''
