After many years of hunting. I find that each sport has different approaches and interests. Take Pheasant hunting for example.

Each person has different interests that draw them into the sport as a whole.

What part of Pheasant hunting most interests you. I guess I missed the most important one. I LOVE TO EAT PHEASANT. Sorry. I can't edit the poll questions..dang it.

You shoulda left an option to choose more than one or rank them in descending order...I would have chosen BOTH #1 & 3 almost equal (and maybe #2 just a little below them as well, IF I was lucky enough to have a piece of land to tinker with)! Probably do love dog work the most though, even if I am an eternal wanderlust adventurer who gets bored hunting the same place or species all the time!!!

+1 I had to go with 3, But it was hard not to go with 1. Should be a great poll.:)

+1, I would also have liked to see an option for "getting out with friends and family" but we can't have everything can we:D

Im with hen, hen, Rooster!!!. If I had to pick one it would be dog work.

Not enough options for a poll of this nature. Probably most of all I enjoy the time in the field with my dogs. But also I just enjoy being out in the field, watching nature around me, enjoying time with a friend or two, getting the exercise, etc. What kind of gun I carry or the fact I might harvest a bird or two are totally secondary.

Yep, 1 cause I love my dog and watching him work diligently. I would love to pick #3 but for now out of state hunts are just dreams. Bird hunting in general has taken me to many new places in my own state, and introduced me to a lot of good people. I think the comradory of upland hunting is also a big draw for most of us.

I agree with George on this poll. I voted #1. I have felt for many years and have wrote articles for my weekly newspaper column. On how Mother Nature is the best nurse around. I truly believe if we could not not get out in nature from time to time. There would be a lot more Mental Health problems. Just look at how we become in the winter when the freedom of movement is not the best...........Bob

Pheasant Hunting it's the whole package I love

I had to vote on watching good dog work, it really is the best of all of it. Having said that I still love the total package from the early spring work on habitat to worring every time a severe thunderstorm watch gets issued (NO HAIL please) to getting the opening day set up, getting together with friends both old and new. I love the get outdoors part of it, in fact I just love the whole damm thing.

Come on winter be done--oh ya woke up to 10 inches of new snow and it is still snowing. When it snows in the southern Black Hills it will snow on the pheasant habitat next.

Poll

To see a great bird dog to what they are bred for is a picture that will last in your mind forever.to see a dog having fun hunting and being a part of the group on a trip is really what it is all about.the bragging rights are just a bonus.

I just like to watch truly wild and agile colorful pheasants flush and glide across the country side.
I could easily do that all year. A good dog is helpful but if I can watch them fly without a dog that's great fun also.

it has changed for me as i am getting older. In the beginning i wanted to do it because it was what my dad did and i wanted to be like him. Then i moved into a period of being an obsessed "meat hunter". The birds in the bag were always most important. But after my sons started to hunt, it is about watching them and my dog. I can go all weekend and not shoot, as long as they get some opportunities. That would have killed me twenty years ago. I guess my life is starting to come full circle.

Nothing like watching great dog work for me, I could of shot 10 times what i shot this year, It is more about watching the tools you put into a dog and the ones he learns from the pheasants, some times i didnt even take a gun just my camera.....:)

I enjoy watching dogs work the birds in the field, so right now I go out with friends. I am in the works of getting my own. I do like traveling though, and with traveling, you get a different view being able to see the country from gravel roads. I am also turning in to a gun fanatic. I just bought a coyote rifle and am just waiting to save up a little cash to get the 1911 I want. This is a good poll though, hard to think of every available option at the time. Thanks Onpoint.

For sure I really like watching the bird dog!

But for me it's the total adventure, exploring, checking out new stuff.

So for me, it's the travel and adventure, with the pups of course.

When I was reading through the options they really didn't hit home with me. It got me thinking though.

For me, it's all about the bird itself. Pheasants pheasants pheasants. Since a young boy I would spend most of my free time in the fields looking for, flushing, observing, studying pheasants. It's just in my blood and apart of who I am I suppose. Hunting pheasants just brings me all the more closer to the bird we all love.:) -1pheas4

It always amazes me how much the dog work out ranks everything else. The landowners at our UGUIDE camps are also amazed at how "dog centered" most of the sportsmen and women are that come to our camps.

I know which option I was going to pick right away but I could have picked them all.

Great poll!:10sign:

I agree with Bob about getting out in nature. The dynamics for upland game hunting are very different, and I personally think much more enjoyable, than other forms of hunting. Deer hunting whether on a stand, drive, or stalking (I archery hunt so mostly stand for me) is great, but too many of my friends take it so serious they miss-out on the opportunity to just enjoy nature. These same fellows on a bird hunt get a kick out of the random encounters with various non-game wildlife, joke about their missed shot opportunities, and love to BS with strangers met in the field in the middle of a hunt. Everyone is different, but I find it more relaxing trekking around looking for pheasant than hunting any other game (though snowshoe rabbit is a close second.)

I didn't know you wrote a column, Bob. For what paper? Do you have a link?
