Orange

Whats the law on wearing orange in S. D. ??

It may not be required but highly recommended. Last year a guy and his young son were hunting the same public land as our group. Neither had any orange. You could hardly see them. Bad example for the kid. Orange is a safety thing, why would not want to wear it. At a very minimum an orange cap but I also recommend some orange on the upper body. Why take the risk by not wearing orange.

Just a question, for where orange is a legal requirement. Why do only people participating in hunting have to ware it?

You can do any other activity in the outdoors and they require nothing. Do hunters only shoot other hunters? IMO, if it was all about safety..everybody would be required to ware it, not just hunters

I with tell you one thing, I have had uncomfortable situations with bow hunters, hunting at Public areas, for pheasants, these guys wearing gilly suits up in a tree in a hedgerow on opening day of pheasant season! If it a law, and a good as far as I'm concerned, why don't these guys wear orange! Heck there up 20' feet in a tree, they shinned up, why not wear orange? Deer seldom look up any way. In the south quail hunters wore white to alert others, white head bands on hats, white shirts. Wearing orange is a ridiculous color, nothing natural resembles it, why not, especially in public areas.

Why can a person pick berries, hike, cut wood, shoot photo's, Etc all during hunting season but no requirement of blaze orange?

There's a much bigger picture here but few see it or are willing to acknowledge it.

Onpoint, I agree 100%. I know when I was a kid, my Dad made me wear an orange hat or vest anytime we were in or around areas where there was even the slightest chance someone could be hunting regardless of what I might be doing. Even on our own farm. Today it is second nature to me during hunting season to have orange on when out and about. I am teaching my son this same valuable lesson.

Pretty much when scattergunning tho one hears of the occasional stray bullet.

Other than consideration for another hunter in thick cover, safety in public areas and legalities, I'm not a fan of orange at all but, in the larger picture, it's not much of a hardship either.
I wore orange with the one pellet I took but, again, one wears it for the odd chance it will indeed make a difference and setting an example regarding a safety requirement for a youth.
Making the requirement an issue for everyone from farmers to mailmen though is a stretch and appears based more on a contrarian agenda than anything else.

The one silly problem that can arise is the nature of the orange, whether faded or dirty.
Wardens have been known to be sticklers and exemplars can be pulled from pockets.
Commonsense needs applied in the case of orange......on several sides.

I agree on the safety factor wearing orange. My family (dogs included) wear orange when outdoors during deer season. However, I don't see the wisdom in mandating orange for other activities during hunting season. Where do you draw the line?

Why can't you have a suppressor on your gun?

I always wear orange hat and orange vest. Don't see why that is a problem, it makes me feel safer even when I am on private property hunting alone. I do not like hunting with anyone not wearing orange and I will say something to them about it, have even given people a orange hat to wear. Pheasants don't care what color you are wearing when you are trying to kill them. They can hear you way before they can see you. I do not hunt where I do not have permission, not trying to hide from anyone, it is for safety and peace of mind.

I want to see other hunters that I'm hunting with, and I want them to see me. Always. Before I pull the trigger, I always want to know where everyone is located.

Forcing us to wear orange is just another example of the man trying to hold us down:D

Myself.. I will wear if on public, or with others.. but when Im by myself on private, its certainly not a priority for me..

When bird hunting I always wear an orange hat, my strap vest is orange, my light jacket has orange arms and shoulders. If I don't have to wear a jacket, I usually wear a shirt that has some color on it as well, as I type this I'm thinking maybe I should buy an orange t-shirt.

I don't wear any of this because I'm fearful of being shot. I wear it because I hope it eases fears of others in my group of not being able to locate me. When hunting I'm constantly looking as to where the others in our group are. Typically, everybody has at least an orange hat on. Yeah, they can be seen, but nowhere near as easy as the guys that have orange sleeves and shoulders as well. I always hunt with less paranoia when the rest of my party has more than just a hat on. Its the difference between casual glances left and right to pick out somebody, versus having to focus to the left and right to pick out exactly where somebody is.

Someone help me here. Whether or not orange is required we all have to agree it is an aide in safety. I guess I fail to understand the logic in not wanting to wear orange. Look at it from one of your hunting buddies perspective. How would he feel if he shot you because he did not see you since you were not wearing any orange? Would the orange have saved you, not necessarily, but it would have made it a lot easier for your buddy to see you.

I have orange caps, vests, jackets, etc. Hell, I might even buy some orange briefs!! When I'm in the field I want to be seen. I do not want to get shot. You all can do as you please, I'm not going to force my opinion on anyone. Heck we even have to wear orange in our NSTRA field trials. SAFETY FIRST!

ive seen on TV shows of pheasants hunts wear the posters aka bnlockers took off there orange once in position for the reason that they didnt want the pressured pheasants to see them when they were flushed into the air lol dumb if you ask me...

in MN its common to see guys logging while the grouse & even deer seasons are going on & you always see the guys at least wearing a blaze orange ball cap & or vest they will also have cheap orange vests hang on there trucks up high to be seen from afar

One other reason...

If I'm hunting public land and I pull up and see some little blaze orange dots moving around out there at the far end of a section, I start the car and move on to another spot.

Don't get mad if you're dressed in earth tones and I start hunting a field you're at the far end of. I'm not being rude, I just didn't see you.

Count me with the other orange hunters. I want to be seen.

When I started upland hunting back in '87, never saw it as a priority to wear orange. Didn't think it was a fashionable color, had all the Columbia coats and pants to match with only an orange hat. Had a vest(orange) that I only wore when required(deer season). After one season of taking a pellet twice, my view of fashion changed. Always wear my vest or my new orange coat depending on temperature. Now when I see people out hunting NOT wearing orange, not even a hat, I think they are nuts! How many times have you seen people out hunting a field of public tall grass prairie 7' high with no orange??? Wonder if those in Dick Cheney"s party wore orange?
I wear my P F orange hats ALL the time, proud of what it stands for and feel it shows my support for upland hunting. Any time I see orange I always wonder if that may be a fellow hunter, a "bloodbrother". My boss ribs me everytime I show up wearing my hat, I get the "O K we see you". And that is the point!!!
