Lost my best hunting partner today!

Well, I lost the best hunting partner I have ever owned today. My golden retriever Ruby was 12 years old. She lived a great life, had literally thousands of birds shot over her, and was always full of life. In the end old age took her down. She stopped eating about a month ago and lost all her strength. In her prime I would have stacked her up against any bird dog. They say talking about it is good for the grieving process so here are two of the greatest memories I have of her.
One day in Saskatchewan we shot 120 snow geese, 15 honkers and a hand full of ducks. She shared the load of retrieving with one other dog that day and by the time we were done she was covered in blood and loving life. Ever time we shot she went after another goose or two. By the end of the morning I had piles of geese laying around me and one happy, tired dog!
My other memory I can share is of the year we guided at a game farm for pheasants and ducks. we shot 1048 birds that year over my two goldens and they got a lifetime of experience in one fall. One particular retrieve I will never forget was at the duck pond. We were shooting big fat mallards and Ruby was force-fetched so she never let a bird go. Well the excitement of ducks falling and ducks in her mouth was overwhelming that day. She was coming back with a drake in her mouth and another drake was shot and glided into the woods. Off she went for that second bird with the one still in her mouth. Well as you can guess, out comes this 45 pound golden with two big fat drake mallards in her mouth, both delivered to hand. Never had a prouder moment.
I will miss you Ruby, you are an irreplaceable hunting companion. Rest in peace girl!

And...as I've often repeated to myself,

had she been able to design her own life, the one you shared with her would have been exactly to her specifications.

Sorry for your loss, but glad for your time together.

Never easy but it sure sounds like you two had a heck of a ride together. Sorry to hear. Hang in there, from one Golden guy to another...

Sorry for your loss, but it sounds like she was fortunate to live the life she was bred for - more than most dogs can say. 12 years and thousands of birds is the definition of a life well lived.

Cheers,

I feel your pain, on February 22nd I had to put one of my Labs down due to cancer. He was a few months shy of 9 years old. A very tough thing to do, just breaks your heart.

I once read something along the lines of "When a man is proud of his dog, and shows it, I like him. But when the dog is proud of him, and shows it, I like him immensely". Given the life that you provided for her, it's clear that you both had much to be proud of in each other. Keep cherishing the many memories in this time of loss.

My sincere condolences. Focus on all of the good times, of which there were obviously many.

Lost your dog

Sorry. I had one golden and they are special dogs. Your next one will have big paws to fill. Glad you have all those memories.

I'm very sorry to hear about Ruby's passing Goldenboy. It's the worst thing about having these companions. Those were two great stories. I have found in the past that telling folks stories about your cherished lost companion is indeed good therapy. That helped me get over having to put my 14.5 yr old Cody down last August. Cody was half of my original PairOfLabs handle. Cody will never be "replaced" but I have added a new little companion, Brady, to fill some of the void.

Hang in there Goldenboy.
Tom

Well said sir, well said! I could not agree more, and I am sorry for your loss Goldenboy.
