Heard a great rule of thumb one time..."Be careful what you say about a man's wife and kids, be extra careful what you say about a man's bird dog"

Well, when gentlemen hunt, there always used to be some basic rules of etiquette. One of those is that your dog not be a killer. And it's certainly nothing to brag about. It's like my satellite tv guy. He told me my spaniels must not be much for bird dogs because they don't kill my chickens, but his GSP he says proudly, "would kill the whole flock". I told him that's no indication of the quality of my dogs, but maybe it is a statement about their intelligence. I told him that perhaps it's a statement on the control (or lack thereof) he has over his dogs. I watch my spaniels set birds to flight with a nudge of their noses, all the time, they could grab them if they wanted to, but they know the game, no BANG, no retrieve.

I'm afraid those days are gone. My father told me that back in 30's when duck hunting, if you crippled a duck and it flew over another hunter, he'd knock it down. Then you would get together, he'd give you your bird and you'd give him a shell to replace the one that he fired. Long gone.

So your dogs will kill a wounded bird, they won't retrieve it to hand to be humanely dispatched? Those kind of dogs are best left on the couch. All three of my birds yesterday died by my hand, and are in fine shape for human consumption.

To me humanely dispatched means they are dead when they hit the ground. Very rarely do I ring a neck.

Congratulations on your marksmanship, you are a better man than I.

........ huh?

Is that difficult for you to understand? If so, I am of little help to you. Again, it's not your dog's job to kill birds, it's his job to put them airborne. I would invite you to come have a look, but, well,,, Nah.

I have no doubt a dog can be trained to not catch a bird, but somehow I doubt you did

Your attitude is something else. You're here for a fight. Most of the rest of us are here to discuss. Bye. Knock yourself out.

So wait a minute... So let's say your perfectly mannered spaniel kills a bird by accident ( now we all know that would not happen but let's just pretend). They would not retrieve it? How would you take the evidence to turn yourself in? Would you go over and pick it up? Or God forbid leave it lay? Or just give the CO the gps coordinates so he could track it down? You are starting to sound like the guy from western kansas that had the Britts and wanted to fight me all the time. What was his name again Brown Dog?

I am looking at the first week of December. I imagine that would be too late for you but if not I would enjoy hunting a day if possible. I would love to see your Labs work. I am sure they are more refined than mine. He is a hard worker and has a great nose. But he will snatch a bird if I am not looking:)

Yeh that guy I can't it even think of it right now. Crap what was it?
You know I still drive around looking for his place. Some of the landmarks he used to photograph looked real familiar. One of these days I'll run into him.

May still me around--in fact quite possible--

As for snatching birds--is it not great of how great and refined some peoples dogs are--

At least on the net--:eek::cheers:

Shadow.

One time he got so pissed he pm'd me asking me for my address telling me he was going to come up and kick my ass. I told him he may want to see a picture before he headed up, you know to see what he was getting himself into. He got banned shortly after that.

That there is funny:D I'd like to meet him. I wonder if he is as full of it in real life.

I will check in on you in a few weeks and see what your plans are.

I was discussing this thread with a friend yesterday, neither of us had a clue what the fine would be for shooting a hen. It took a bit but I found the answer for Kansas.

http://www.kscourts.org/dstcts/6fshgamesched.pdf

That would be a minimum of $100 max of $196.

Make sure you don't shoot any Crows out of season! $500-$596! I don't know if that is per crow or not.
Why such a value on crows? They are scavengers and opportunists which will eat pheasant eggs and young chicks on occasion, along with very young rabbits. They hurt the population more than an "accidental" killing of a hen pheasant.

Not saying crows should be shot "out of season", even here in PA there is a set season on crows.
