Dog Food

I'm feeding taste of the wild bison. It's the best food I can afford to feed them right now. I used to feed some high dollar grain free stuff but I can't afford it feeding 3 hunting dogs.

I used to feed PP, good food and a lot of folks feed it but my males performance was lacking bad in warmer weather for some reason as compared to others I've fed. Can't say I have any experience with the others. Check labels and feed the best stuff you can afford imo. Even the Kirkland brand lamb and rice is pretty good food for the price.

I also feed TOTW. I like that I can switch between the real high Kcal (450 bison) to the more moderate (340 salmon) with no stomach upset. I am able to get this food at 10% over cost but I would still feed it at retail price. I may give country vet a try as I can get 50 lbs for about 22$ versus TOTW at 30 lbs for 27$.

I have 5 dogs I am feeding. I've fed: Science Diet, Iams, Pro-plan and am now feeding Purina One. They have done well on all. I'm getting ready to switch to Diamond soon.

I try to keep it as much under a $1 a pound as possible. I feed a 26/16 since I don't hunt but maybe twice a week in the winter and in the off season during training (more than hunting) they don't have to deal with cold weather AND hunting so I keep it the same. I feel that unless you are hunting your dog 3-4 times a week and hunting them hard that a 26/16 will do a good job.

I feed chicken and rice. The biggest thing I look for is by-product. If it says that as the first ingredient I don't feed it.

Feed the best you can afford and for me I need to keep it under a dollar a pound.

Lots of opinions on dog food out there and that's mine. If you do a google search there are quite a few documents to you can read on this subject from various sources.

I have a yellow lab, I have to be conscious about food allergies. I have fed the O.N.E. and the dog really liked it. Not so much for Royale Canine, Pro plan, Eukanuba, and Nutromax. Now I feed Wellness Ocean formula. I won't tell you what it costs! but beats the $400.00 steriods, K-flex, and ear drops, for 21 days. I have used Diamond for years, I like it. Dogs like it. They have had a lot of ingredient problems in the last 5 years, I would be cautious of that, and kinda ruled them out because of it. But, I have one dog, these days. You might try Pro-Pac 26-18 without a history, they will give you a stamped rebate for a free bag when you buy 7-8, 40#.

For 13 years I have fed two hunting dogs nothing but Purina One which is 26% protein and 16% fat. It is excellent. You can buy it anywhere - any Walmart or supermarket - which is an important consideration because it is not a good situation to have to switch your dog's food suddenly when you can't find that special dog food and have to settle for something in the store.

Any Ideas on a good food that will keep my lab working hard and lean?

There have been a lot of threads on this site about dog food. This is really a loaded question. Almost like asking which shotgun is best. Everyone has their favorites. And there is no correct answer. A food that one dog does well on may not work for another dog. Buy a good quality food and try it for awhile and see how your dog does.

X2--what Zeb says--that said PPP is what I feed--note the third P--- Performance is important IMO--my dogs get worked hard 12 months a year and do well on it as well as a large # of the other dogs I'm around a great deal--that said some dogs need something else for health reasons or owner preference--this question has been beat to death as stated---rates right up there with politics and religion to start a argument, just feed a good food your dog does well on and your happy with

The only Pro Pac that is 26-18 is the Small Breed Adult and it only comes in 20 lb bags.. The Adult and Adult mini-chunk is 26-15. I feed the adult mini-chunk mixed half and half with Performance Puppy (30-20). They seem to do really well on that combo during hunting season. Nice food...nice price. I'm getting it for $ .625/lb. Been saving my POP's off the bags, wasn't sure if they had a rebate program or not. Still not sure. If anyone know's if they have one, drop me a PM.

I was a ProPlan guy for years. When my dog numbers grew and Purina started pricing themselves way out of my teacher's salary league, I dumped them for Loyall which is a great food. It started out at $26.99 for 40lbs and in a year and a half went to $39.99/ 40lbs........On to Pro-Pac!

I got my rebate from the retailer, They stamp it at the cash register, when you get the number, they give you a bag. I used it clear back to when Well's was the maker.

I have wholesale supplier that I get my Pro-Pac from. I've asked them about rebates but they don't do them. I'm still saving the POP's with the hope of meeting up with a Rep. that can do something for me.

X2 dogs love it and they just seam to hold there weight better.

I feed my dog Canidae (All Life Stages). It's a pretty high quality food at a reasonable price. It's not quite ranked as high as TOTW, but it's pretty close in all the research I did. It runs about $1.30 per pound. My vet recommended it and they don't even sell it. I get mine in a 44# bag and I started feeding to him as a pup. One nice thing about it is that after you buy 12 bags you get the 13th bag free. I think it's worth checking out.

Are you getting brown bags? The dog food manufacturers sold brown bag/kennel packs for years, from distributors. They were quite a buy, but the consumer rebates were not included. purina, iams, science diet, and a whole lot of others.
