What would you willing to do, to move to a very rural life in hunting country?

How much would you be willing to sacrifice?

Would you leave your close family to be in the heart of hunting country?
 
Yes & Yes !! I have been thinking about this vary hard recently im young and do not have a Gf and would love to Move to sw minn. or Sodak if i could and find a job if the money was right!
 
I think about it sometimes. I doubt I can talk the wife into it though, especially if there isn't a Starbucks or Caribou in the area.
 
The wife and I talk about this intensely over the Christmas vacation we wanted to open or take over an outfitter in Wyoming, Colorado, Montana area etc... The plan was we had good friends of ours that were great with people and would run the bed and breakfast and my wife and I would run the hunting side of things, she would handle the four legged critters and I would handle the ducks pheasants and turkeys. We were going to do this after we won the lottery, so the answer would be yes and yes.
 
I would definitely, for a little bit. I'm actually basing my job search on where pheasants are right now. I've been looking in Kansas and Sodak. My plan is to build up some capital and move back home to take over my dad's hardware store in NC Iowa.
 
My wife and I talked this over 22 years ago when I retired. We decided to stay here rather than move back to MN. There are times now I wish we had made the move........Bob
 
I have a totally rural situation here, lots of land and wildlife.

I could definitely see my self living in a shack in the woods with 5 or 6 good bird dogs and not much else. Like gustav I am a young single man and would love to move somewhere teaming with game. Anybody hiring in Oregon, Idaho, Montana, or Colorado? I have a class A cdl, and have experience operating heavy equipment (road grator, skip loader, back hoe etc...). I already miss out on most holidays during hunting season anyway so my family would understand me moving away.

We already live in a very rural area. we have a 150 acres and own a small place in South Dakota too. We are tired of the long winters, extrema cold, bugs, short growing season, influx of out of towners every weekend and a few other things. My wife is from central/western South Dakota.

My problem is I have parents who are crowding 80 years old. We are very close and they depend on us very much each and every day. Moving for them to a entire new area with little people they know..scares the hell out of them. See, we told them we would take them with. We just couldn't leave them with no one to watch over or take care of them. On the same note, we don't want to waste our years not getting in on some things before we are too old ourselves.

A tough deal, moving them back to the twin cities with my sisters families would kill them. My folks are very close with me. I'm afraid if I left them during their last years. It would speed up their going down hill. I can't live with that. I'm torn...I wish they would/could make the move with us but that may also lead to their going down hill. Not having any connections from the area.

What would you do?
 
I think you've gotta prioritize and then go from there. As much as I love hunting, I don't think I could put it above the well-being of another human being, especially a family member. On the other hand, it's been interesting for me to read some of the responses on here. My wife and I have had similar conversations about someday moving to one of the great bird states and opening up a preserve. She's actually totally down with the idea, although she wants to be within an hour of a mall :)

Onpoint, I think you should just be content where you're at...most of us would LOVE to be in SD and own 150 acres! :D
 
Well it is a rough decision. My wife's parents are still going strong in their 70's, trips to Europe etc. Mine are long gone. If I had either one back, I'd live in Katmandu, if I had to. How do the folks feel? Maybe become snow birds like the rest of Minnesota, for a few years, see how it goes. Could be a great adventure for everybody. My own situation is a little different, I would love to live in a remote area, but have young kids, whom I am not willing to sacrifice to the lack of opportunity, quality of rural educational districts, and the attendent low test scores, social developement, fine arts programs, etc. So here we are!

If you're serious about those areas look into the agricultural field, specifically animal ag. Not saying you are going to get rich but a good opportunity to get to a rural area and make a decent living. Not for everyone but I will say it has treated me well and there are a lot of opportunities for the right people.

BTW - Wouldn't trade living in the country for anything! the 1.5 years I spent living in a small town was the worst of my life by far.

I like livin here in the western Denver suburbs with some elements of the best of both worlds - all the cultural amenities and eats of a big city, wildlife & hiking in the backyard/skiing an hr away/elk-deer hunting & pheasant-laden fields only 2-3 hrs away in opposite directions - wife turns left/I turn right, works out pretty well for both the Mrs & I... :thumbsup:

Did the exact same thing both in Bucks County PA & way back when in El Paso, and it worked out equally well...Tried the remote thing in TX a few yrs back & it just wasn't workin for the Mrs at all (or me either for that matter)...Everyone has to find out what werks for them! I love hunting/fishing/wildlife/hiking/solitude/ect., but I equally love people, multi-culture & exotic eats from all over the world - can't always have it all!!! Hate to say this, but I think at this point in my life I would get bored if all I ever did was hunt all the time - it would lose some of it's specialness (probably wouldn't have felt the same way when I was younger)...Having said all of this, I can deeply appreciate & am very glad for all those who do choose to preserve the very special & unique rural way of life!!! :cheers:
