What did you learn this year??

I learned that if my dog points a "dead" bird instead of just picking it up and retrieving it, I should make sure my gun is loaded.... Obviously she knew what she was doing since my "dead" bird flew away.

Thats Great. I bet that scared the hell out of you. I would have loved to see that.

#1. That the moment your Wife shoots her first Rooster is Awesome! 2. Ice on Sloughs is never thick enough! 3. I enjoy hunting more and more each year with my Hunting "PAL" and we have been doing it for 25 years together. And #4 When your pointing Lab locks up SOLID without even twitching a muscle, DO NOT walk up and attempt to kick the bird into the air! (Those little Black & White 4-legged bushytailed critters don't fly, but they sure as hell smell terrible!!!!) Happened 2x's this year the deSTINKing kit is always in the truck from this year on!

Hmmmm, let's see....I learned:
There are people left, (in KS at least) who are nice, just to be nice!
Most hunters have "some" common sense. Most others do not.
I learned from KB what a landmine is.
I learned a shock collar can be good for dogs...shock cattle fence, not so much.
Let's see, I learned you can have a crooked barrel
I learned that no matter how good a shot I was 15 years ago.....I must practice before this season.
I learned, I can have the time of my life, without having a hangover the next day.
I learned to take a poop before leaving for the field....There ain't much to hide behind in KS.
I learned that KB and fam as well as GSH Lover, share the same values and time afield as me.
I learned, by way of GSH Lover's youngest, that it is just a good a feeling to see a youngster get his first bird, as it was when I got mine. Thank you for that by the way.
I learned I got a couple of new friends in KS.
I learned 4:00 a.m. sucks no matter what state you are in.
I learned 3 new excuses.
1. I strained my barrel from shooting too far.
2. My scope was fogged only works when actually shooting a gun WITH a scope.
3. I pulled a muscle because I was so quick on he draw.

I learned that I will be back repeatedly.
Lastly I learned.....that I got a LOT to learn!!!!!

I posted the story somewhere on this forum. We had a bird sail a good distance on us before it finally dropped near the road. When we got back to the truck, we drove to where we saw the bird go down and let the dog out. When she pointed, I walked over without my gun. I called my uncle over (with his gun) to get the bird. Long story short... it was hilarious except for the part where the bird flew away... I got to laugh at my uncle, but I'm still kicking myself for not bringing my gun.

I learned a new wrinkle about how to read a dog, and also to never go after a bird without a gun..

Lessons from Hunting

1. The gun makes a big difference in how a fella shoots. I got a new gun and I am shooting better than ever.

2. The older I get the more worried I am that someday I will not be able to go afield. That will be a difficult day for me.

3. That while I enjoy hunting alone, I prefer hunting with a few good friends.

4. That quail and pheasant seem to thrive differently. This past season pheasant numbers seemed up by half while quail seemed down by half.

I would second the learning curve on the differences between managing quail and managing pheasants. Pheasants are far easier, and respond far quicker to management. I think it's going to take a long time if ever, to restore the quail population we had in my youth.

That driving on KS mud after a Jan thaw is about as slippery as two eals in a bucket of snot! :D

Hope you learned that lesson without too much pain. Once you learn that one, you never forget... Although sometimes your impatience or enthusiasm gets the best of you and you get a timely reminder...

i learned that if there is a blizzard warning for northern nebraska, don't try to drive through it to get to South Dakota in mid December. Cost me a lot of stress, a night in a crappy motel, and a mirror from getting side swiped by a semi in near whiteout conditions on an overpass in Nebraska.

LOL! Carptom I learned the same thing back in Dec. '08 yet been in that same situation 3 more times since (including this past Dec.). How? Because some of those I hunt/drive with just didn't learn!!

I learned that no matter what you do the roosters are gonna win at least 50% of the time & even when you do everything exactly "RIGHT" just like you & everybody else thought it should be done, dem wily ol' ditch parrots will do the one thing you were sure they would never do!!! Worthy Chessmaster opponents they are, that's what keeps it interesting & keeps me coming back... :D
