Spring Turkey

w. kansas

3 of us hunted 1 1/2 days, shot 4 birds, birds broken up, some stutting, some gobbles, none come running to the call. i shot one with the 14 ga. heading out again today, looks like i'll be hunting in rain, ice and snow, have a college buddy down from wash. state so have to go, didn't really see a lot of birds but did see lots and lots of guys hoping to shoot one in the middle of the road. wind was terrible

cheers

I hope you got that with a 1050 fps black powder load of #7 1/2 shot!!! You can't kill a turkey with a load like that, ;)need a jelly head 3 1/2" with 2 ounces of #4's. Did you get the "eating" squirrel too? Nice Bird.

Since this is the official Turkey thread, here's the post-pic hunt from what I posted on the previous page-

Dad (ole_270 on here) and myself with my 2 year old-

Bagged a young tom at 7:45 p.m. in Republic Co. on Sat. 4.5 inch beard, about 20 pounds. Set up about 4:30 p.m. and did a lot of fruitless calling before my tom and his jake bud came up from the river to check out the action.

Here is the 2 year old that my son shot last weekend.

Here is the video of the hunt I took with my cell phone.

Sweet!! Toms down here are still henned up pretty bad.Need a week of warm weather to get the hen to nesting.
Nice Bird

another bird

awhile back i made a post about shooting turkey with my 14 ga. someone replied that it was no big deal shooting one with a gun that big. not sure what that big meant nor am i sure if he understood and antique 14 ga. anyway, he stated that if wanted to have a challenge try using a .410. well, i did, and you know what, i shot a jake and he died just like all the other one's i have shot. this one hit the deck at 11 yards. just gotta get close, that's all. now, back to my 14 ga. or my bow. turkey sure have split up, not much noise out of them and they don't seem to care much for my calling either,

cheers

A few Turkey pics from the last week or so.

This was on the game camera

Agree with you about the birds. The weather has them so screwed up,they don't know what to do.Had 2-3 birds gobbling in the tree this morning,I was about 100 yds or so away, never hit me.Had a hen just a talking with me,the toms never gobbled either one of us.Heard them fly down, and thats the last thing that I heard. The nice thing about it,when it got light enough to see,I was sitting in a patch of morels, got 20-30 as big as a baseball, and 5-7 inches tall.Spent the next hour or so looking for more, and never found anymore,or saw any turkeys.Maybe when the weather gets right, then the turkeys will act right.Who knows, that's why they call it hunting.

Nice bonus with the morels! I know I have been out every weekend since the opener and they aren't working at all. This cold front is not helping either.

I did manager to get the decoy cam operational just no birds to video. I will post my test run vid. If they every do start working it will be cool to video from the decoy. Have 2 Midland XTC 350's in use. One at the blind and the other on the decoy.

Had to Stalk - Calls & Decoys Ignored

For my Unit 1 tom, I had to stalk the rascal. No toms would come to my dekes and calls on my pre-dawn set up. They all just wandered off so I pulled up stakes. Saw a big strutting tom out in the adjacent green wheat henned up east of some brush and trees. Parked west of the cover and sneaked up. Tried to call but no response. Snuck around the cover and got him. Eight inch beard, one inch spurs. Lots of fun.

i think the morels are more exciting in as much as i have never had them

cheers

This sucks.First Saturday since turkey season opened, that I did not go out. Can't see doing it,35 degrees and rain at 5 am,now its 42 and drizzle, think I am getting old.Crappy May weather.

I went ahead and went this morning. Rained pretty much the whole time.
Took a while but took a pretty nice bird, 1-1/8" spur and 10" beard.

I will post some picks later.

Nice job!!Guess I am getting old LOL

I was in a good ground blind, had tons of cloths on, and still was pretty cold.

Began to question my sanity when the they were hung up in the middle of the field with the rain blowing in through the window of the blind;)

we used to hunt in a blind, but it limited my visibility to much. One time we had a tom at about 15-20 yds? gobbling his head off,my kid couldn't get a shot,so no more blind. As I get older,I am going to invest in a nice two man blind, any ideas on a good and cheap one?
