Purina Pro Plan

So western WA pheasant just kicked off here in Washington. I got my 11 month old Britt back from the trainer and she is a machine so far.

But have been feeding Taste of the Wild wildfowl, which has good protein and fat content. It's only 350 calories per cup. She has been losing a little weight and we are feeding about 4-5 cups a day. Now that I am hunting her want to get her on a once daily feeding. Have been looking at Pro Plan. It is 540 calories per cup and seems decent. Honestly scared off because of all the crap Purina has put out in the past.

Anyone using it? Any other recommendations on a high calorie 30/20 food for a working dog? Not wanting to feed twice a day from now till middle January when hunting season is over. But want to do her right when it comes to nutritional needs. Now aiming for Senior Hunter and some Field Trials next year.

I am a big supporter of once a day feeding. However 11 months is way to young to switch. I usually wait until 18-24 months depending on the dog. 5 cups is a lot of food for a dog to consume in 1 feeding, especially a smaller dog like a Brittany. You will be better of waiting until she quits growing and needs less food.

I've never had a Brit but 4-5 cups seems like a lot, how are her stools?

PPP is a very good food, but all dogs are different. Some do great on brand X, some on brand Y don't let the silly commercials being ran bashing Purina sway you from PPP. I'm pretty sure Purina has invested far more into pet nutrition than any other manufacturer. Pick a widely available mid range priced food, give it a 3 month trial if the dog does good stick with it if not try another. Just my opinion but I think all the super expensive "magic" ingredient foods only make the owner feel good......not the dog.

PS I don't feed PPP and am not trying to push it but I do know it's a quality food.

ProPlan 30/20 Sport is probably fed by the majority of breeders and trainers. For some reason it seems to get a bad rap. It's a quality food so don't be afraid to give it a try.

I'm with Gatzby, 4-5 cups is a lot for an 11 month old Brittany. I've had Brittanys for over 20 years and never fed that amount of food. All dogs are different and do well on different foods. I think if your dog is eating 4-5 cups a day and losing weight it's time to try something different. You might also take a look at NutriSource (http://www.nutrisourcedogfood.com/nutrisource/) and their Performance and Super Performance formulas. The nice thing about ProPlan is you can get it almost anywhere.

Good luck with your Britt.

That is alot of food. Are you sure the dog has no parasites?

Good thought. If you haven't had your dog tested you might want to take a stool sample in to your vet and have it checked.

Go to any horseback brittany trial and you'll see a lot of Pro Plan bags in horse trailers. I'm feeding 4 right now, 3 do well on it. It's seems too "hot" for a young dog I have, he gets PP Sport. All have good stools and maintain wt well.

I was feeding Native for many years just recently switched to PPP because so many trainers and pros use it. I have found it to be fine for my dogs and I agree it is easier to find and I can usually get it cheaper than a lot of the other high fat high protein foods.

When I was living in Nebraska, I had a vet I really trusted, he was a bird dog owner and bird hunter also. He suggested giving my dogs half Purina Puppy chow, and half high protein feed in the fall when they are seeing lots of action. To this day, I buy some Puppy chow in the fall and feed 50/50 with Purina Pro salmon and rice with puppy chow. On a side note...to bad us humans, myself included are not as picky about what we eat, guessing oreo's and doritos would be in trouble if we were, LOL.

You need a feed with more octane. :) Stick with a brand that provides a formula for active or sporting breeds. Pro Plan performance would be one that is readily available. Personally, for the last 4 years I've been successfully feeding Kinetic Performance dog food available thru the network of Hubbard Life feed dealers or Chewy.com with free shipping. This feed is specifically formulated for active, sporting or working breeds with formulas with 26%, 30% and 32% protein percentages for those hard keepers.

Holy Smokes that is a lot of food. My male lab weighs 91 lbs and gets 3 cups and my 55 lb female gets 2.5 cups of Dr. Tim's Kinesis All Life Stages forumula. Lot's of good foods out there but Dr. Tim's is a cut above the rest. If cost is a factor, take a look at Victor. I feed once a day year round. Hard to beat Chewy's for whatever food you choose.

I finally settled on Victor Professional. I’ve tried several Victor foods and they seem to do best on this one. Chewy is hard to beat. I get the food in one day from shipping. Set up auto ship and get a discount. My local store closed so this worked out pretty well.

I am feeding Dr. Tims now but if I ever give something else a try it will be Victor. I like Eukenuba but the bags have gotten to small.

Purina Pro Plan sport either 26/16 or 30/20

If you watch ebay, like now, you will see coupons for sale. Right now they have some 5.00 off and 10.00 coupons for Petsmart. BUT if you take those to Petsmart, they will honor them.
44.00 bag of 37.5
-10.00 coupon
-07.00 pro plan club check
-05.00 coupon
= 22.00 bag of food. Oh, minus what you payed for coupons which is like maybe 3 bucks.

When you have 4 beasts you have to be thrifty

Remi eats PPP sport 30/20 and like the results. We started her with Blue puppy and switched to the PPP sport. First thing we noticed after the switch was her coat. It got glossier and much healthier looking going from the blue to PPP. Now, if you read the marketing hype, that was not supposed to happen according to the "experts". Remi and us are extremely happy that we made the switch.

I just saw that 10 of the last 10 National Field Champions are fed PPP. Good enough for me!

I wonder how much of this is by choice vs. the fact that Purina is a big sponsor on the bird dog circuit.

Do competitors patronize sponsors? Absolutely as they should.
The time, energy, money, and heartache invested in getting a dog to compete at the national level is so much greater than the cost of dog food. I can't imagine that any of these competitors would skimp to save a dollar on dog food. I'm pretty sure any dog food company would beg Danny Farmer to use their food.
