impact of drought

We are having to leave 4 rows stand for every 40 acres. Works out to about 200 chopped, 4 standing. That not scienitific, it's a WAG (Wild Ass Guess).

Why is this? I've a friend of mine will leave rows of corn up in a certain areas too. If I remember correctly, I believe in his situation he was getting paid to leave it for wildlife.

I may be incorrect:confused:

It is for crop insurance. You leave 4 rows every 40 acres so the yield can still be estimated when the adjuster arrives. There are not enough crop adjusters to get everywhere they need to be at the time of chopping so you have to leave a check strip.

I think there is a misunderstanding that there is a tie between crop insurance and wildlife benefits.

Like wirehairs said, rows are left up so adjusters can assess loss and pay claim on insurance. Once check is out or claim is adjusted the rest of corn can be harvested.

There can be a multitude of reasons why farmers leave some rows up. A lot of time it is for snow fence.

I would not make the assumption that the country side will be littered with strips of corn to hunt or for wildlife to use for winter food. Hope I'm wrong.

Follow the money.

I don't doubt for a minute that some scientists have sold out for the money. Money corrupts, that much we can all agree on, and no career is above it. Doctors, lawyers, politicians, clergy, why not scientists. There is a bunch of money to be made " going green". I am around it all the time. Our offices are even next to a place in KC called " The Green Impact Zone". Millions have been sunk into this eyesore and the only thing green is the money that has been made. That being said, I think you would have to be ignorant to deny our effect on the enviroment by our wasteful ways. Do I think this drought is a result of that? Who really knows. I do know we are in a strange weather pattern. Two winters ago it was as bad as it gets. Last year it was non-existing. Now an epic drought. Pretty weird.

Classic jnormanh tactic-go to a hunting forum where hunters are discussing the impact of drought and attempt to change it to a debate on a left wing hot button issue. Many will remember jnormanh's rants and political diversions from the old site and don't want to hear it. Take your carbon footprint guilt somewhere else. TRUTH

You're still here? I'd have thought you got caught up in the Rapture by now. Don't I hear, faintly, God calling you home?

The fact is that 99% of qualified scientists believe that global warming is real, and 1% don't.

To therefore claim that there is real doubt in the scientific community is the same as claiming that vaccines cause autism, or the WTC was destroyed on the orders of George Bush just because one or two fruitcakes say so.

What do the 99% say caused the global warming that melted the last glacier? We have had global warming before. I am not doubting it now, all we have to do is look at a couple hundred thermometers and keep track. That it is man caused is considered as settled science is a long way from fact. Until you can tell me why the last glacier melted and the one before that there is no way you can prove that this is not just a continuation of that. Who knows when the next ice age will be. In the mean time I am going to continue to manage my pastures in such a way as to maximize carbon sequestration because it is really good for the land to do so.

Okay, got it. Thanks for your explanation WH.

All this talk over the last 5 years about drought resistant and drought tolerant genetics for corn.... Didnt anyone plant those varieties.

The only thing green in my yard, is the weeds.... what do they know?/

You planted genetic weeds,too?!

A request to jnormanh

jnormanh: Your tactics to change and divert from thread topics are easily recognizable. Your method of operation: going off topic, baiting and begging others into debates are the same tactics you used to create the Jerry Springerisk/lack of decorum/low level many of us witnessed on the PheasantCountry.com forum. And to some degree, you have attempted to do that on this site as well.

We understand you like science, medicare, government run health care, the ACLU, believe in global warming and dislike Ted Nugent and the NRA. We get it. You have gone way off topic and out of the way to prove your point on those issues as well as many other issues.

Question is, can't you save all of that for other political/social issue discussion forums instead of a Pheasant Hunting site?

My challenge for you, Jeffrey, is stay on topic, practice civility, and if you feel the need or urge to argue and debate social/political/moral issues, pick a venue where that is accepted and appropriate. Please do not abuse your privilege on this outstanding site.
Thank you,
Truth

Oh...you were more likely referring to the d e a. We're talking weeds ... not weed.

Just got word my neighbor across the road was having all his corn shopped. This is ground that produced 150-200 bushel corn last year. He said this year in some spots it was 100 bushel and in others 0.

We'll be heading out there labor day weekend and I need to check progress on our Roscoe new lodging so may take route along north end of state and then back down thru to south on the 45 or 281 corridor.
