How many Prairie Chicken hunt?

You run across them every once in a while later in the season.

But I usually think they are hen pheasants at first and don't realize what they are until it is too late  :)

I hear ya! Although they are often very predictable, they also sometimes sit in really unexpected places. During quail season I have flushed PCs within 30 yards of the road... before I even loaded my gun!

The dog was still pissin', chittin', and getting her wiggles out, and there goes a flock of chickens!!! I've actually seen that happen a couple times and I always think..., "don't you guys hate roads?"

SetterNut-

1/4 cup pineapple juice
2 TBS soy sauce
2Tbs brown suger
3 TBS Kentucky Burbon
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1/8th tsp garlic powder
1/2 cup vegatable iol
1 tsp chopped chives
1/4 tsp poulty seasoning

place boned breast and boned thighs in merinade sauce, cover and place in frig 3-4 hours-

fire up the grill- lay a double layer tinfoil sides turned up, lay the pieces of meat on the tinfoil- baste regularly untill done- 6/8 min per side depending on size- don't over cook

serve hot with chopped chives sprinkled on top

agree with your post-
funny thing once- we saw a bunch fly and set on a grass low hill side- we stopped at the house that seemed to be the owners and they said it'd be ok- we let just one Britt out- she was working and got somewhere where we figured they lit- was standing with a high head into the breeze- nephew and I ran 150 yards and slight circle to get way in front- weird- the flock started coming up and most went right over us-

I passed up a lot of PCs thinking they were pheasants in the sand hills, finally when I shot one and the dog brought it back it was a juvenile rooster. :( with the pheasants season not open yet.

Don't get too fancy with the recipes, just take a frying pan bacon grease or good olive oil, seer both sides and cook to medium rear like a good stake. I use regular steak seasoning. with a side of sautéed onions or mushrooms.

agreed- some don't really like the taste of real dark meat- so a different approach sometimes makes a difference

it's sort of a special bird- nothing wrong with a special way to cook it

I prefer it the second way I listed- and 9 or so fresh Morrel mushrooms alongside simmering the last 4 min

That makes sense, Steve is sort of a special guy,(I don't mean ride the short bus special) but like owns setters special. :D
By some (especially Vizsla owners), that could be construed as the same thing. But we won't go there. :p

Sometimes things just seem bassakwards.

good coment- wife got me an 8 week old English Setter female pup for Christmas- hunted her with my male Britt for 13 years- awesome pair in 5 states

you'll never hear me say anything bad about a good Setter

I'm so itching for some Ruffed Grouse- I may head up to N Minn to some old stomping grounds- the best I ever had was my brother and I cooked one on a stick over a fire in the backwoods-

Your wife could teach mine a thing or two!

I am a better shot than a cook, and i'm not the greatest shot in the world :D

You see good and not so good dogs in every breed.
You used to see Britts here alll the time, now not that many.
I would never see a Viszla in the past, now I see several. Mostly at one house here in town :D

I was driving back from Emporia after my son's baseball game last week. I looked out toward the setting sun and saw a couple of PC flying to the top of a hill in the middle of a huge pasture. Wish I had permission to hunt that place. Must be at least a full section of nothing but grass

Were you still S of 56 when you saw 'em? If you were driving down road L or the Allen Rd, I most likely have permission or can easily get it. If you really want to hunt some early chickens down that way (from Olpe to about 10 miles N of Allen). Obviously I don't have permission to hunt it all, but I have enough spots to keep us busy. We can get access to most of what you see on Allen Rd and quite a bit of what you see on the Americus Rd. Me, you, and that Visla guy (we've hunted together before) could get our motley crew of bird dogs together and cover some territory.

If you want to save some miles on the truck, I've got a spot by Alta Vista and one by the interstate near Alma, both of which are private as are the ones mentioned above. Then again, one public spot that John and I hunted last season is known for having some chickens and there are several contguous sections of grass there.

in January she'd always say "haven't you hunted enough" course my job was a 4 day workweek- can't remember not hunting every FSS-

kids helped me pick the 7 week male Britt- trained him by the book-
just a bit over 2 years old, two days before Christmas she beat me home

kids were sitting on the floor looking a the base of the tree, presents-
DAD DAD look- there was this little thing of a white setter with a red ribbon arround her neck sitting there

couple hours later- "why didn't you get me a Britt pup"

ok- I'll take her back then- wait wait wait- I didn't mean that

that little setter turned into a superb quail dog-
special place in my heart for female bird dogs

I have it on good authority that the guy in that house is a very smart and handsome fellow, I mean it goes with out saying, since he has not one, but several Vizslas.
I bet the girls are busting down his door just to get a chance at this guy.;)

I figure that there would be more around KS, since one of the first Vs was imported in the US was in KS city.

I was north of Council Grove, about half way to Manhattan. There is a lot of good looking ground for PC all along that stretch. But it takes a fair amont of dog power to get some of that stuff covered
We will have to see if we can get together some time this fall.

Early Prairie Chicken season starts next week. Any of you going to give it a try?

I plan to get out as long as it isn't too hot for the dogs.

Its been a lot cooler, of late. Took the dogs out for a run this morning while it was cool and wet. They were running hard.

I have not gone out to try to scout some PC. But a friend of mine has seen a few. Its going to be nice to just get out in the field hunting with the dog.

living down here it is a big challenge conditioning dogs, it will be well into the 90's for the rest of Sept.....you just have to get up at dawn and get an hour in, that's it.

We should be in the low 80s. But that is hotter than I like to take the dog hunting. Hope to get some temps in the mid 60's.

It was a pretty warm this day, and you can see how hot Ace was, basically hunt till you run out of water.

Steve,

Do you ever run your dogs over at the park North of Farm Bureau? Used to be a good sized covey of quail over there.
