How many Prairie Chicken hunt?

Steve,

Do you ever run your dogs over at the park North of Farm Bureau? Used to be a good sized covey of quail over there.

I have not with for several years. I used to take my old Gordon over there from time to time. She didn't run very big. I have been afraid of the closeness of the roads there.

But I am sure that covey is still there.

If you are talking about the top of the world, then I think the covey is doing okay... There is a lot of new housing to the West of FB and the area isn't as "wild" as it used to be. The wildlife count is definitely down in the last year or two. Used to be lots of deer, turkeys, healthy coyotes, and even bobcats. Hardly see any deer and turkeys anymore, and the only coyotes are sick and bald from mange. I think the covey is smaller too, but it is still there as far as I know.

I used to work dogs on some property that buts up to Colbert and there were a couple of decent sized coveys there. But I haven't been over there in a few months to run dogs, it was too thick to get any work done. I used to run them over at that Park, but there are too many idiots with their idiot dogs there and it's too close to a four lane road.

But to get back on topic, I'll be out hunting PC in three days, assuming it doesn't rain. Steve might have to gun for me, but I'll be out there somewhere.

back to topic

Setternut- my Britt's have never seen a PC- I'll be driving thru your area- most likely- you care to get out Monday afternoon or possibly Tuesday-and let a Britt or two run with your Setter in some fair PC country

I had to travel for work this week. I am hoping to get back by Thursday.

We do a lot more walking than shooting. Not a target rich enviornment.:(

Unless you count the 500 meadowlarks that Ace will point

Daisy was pointing three chickens today, but it was two Rhode Island reds and an Australorp... Luckily they were penned up at the time.

One more day until PC. Sounds like we should have some nice, cool mornings.

I always get at least a few curious points on box turtles. But I figure it just adds to the experience. Like you said, it's not a target rich environment. Stopping to check out a cool box turtle is a nice little break I'll take any day.:D

The meadowlarks can drive you nuts since they usually fly less than 100 feet and it seems like they never circle around behind you. Sometimes you have a pretty nice herd going by the time you hit the end of the field.

I plan to get out, but there may be some family issues that may have priority.
Won't know until tomorrow.

Hope some of you guys get out and have some fun with the dogs.

Weight loss program has begun.

Well John and I got out for a short hunt after work. John got one pointed when it was getting pretty dark.

It was just fun to get out with the dogs. Figure if we walk another 10 miles we will get on another one :D

Ace did better leaving the meadowlarks alone, but they were still a problem for him wanting to point something :)

I was 202 lbs today a work, want to be 195 by the end of the PC season

Nice Job Setternut! I was out this morning, later than I wanted to be:rolleyes:, but I still got out and saw some of those nice red rocks with the green on them...

As I was leaving, a guy pulls up and tells me that he has been running his dogs on every piece of Walk-in and public hunting in the area and there are no prairie chickens on any of it this year... He said I should go to Salina if I was to have any hope of finding a prairie chicken this year... Really? Okay...

I sure hope he was blowing smoke (like I think he was) because I have no intentions of going West until December. I guess Daisy and I will be testing his claims over the next couple weeks...

I only got a couple false points on meadowlarks today, but one of them was a real heart stopper. Usually I can tell when she is full of S#!%, but this point looked like it was for real. Gotta love it when they are running full speed and they stop on a dime and whip around into a point! Got my blood pumping for sure.:D

No chickens today, but I was kinda just hunting what was left. There were a LOT of guys out this morning. The good news was that Daisy the boot-polisher really wanted to stretch her legs today. Multiple times she was at least 300 yards out and once I think she hit a quarter-mile, which is not her typical style. I was proud of her for covering the ground today as well as doing a nice job of checking in when she changed directions. Might need one of those GPS collars when we head West and find some thick CRP. Oh yeah, and might bring a whistle next time...

Well I don't think that there are ever that many PC around, on the WIHA around here. But there is at least 1 PC around here :D

Ace is not a big runner. he maintains contact with me most of the time.
But he is an effective hunting dog.

What he would be good at this time of year would be a meadowlark hunt:rolleyes: At least he was better about them than last year.

Had one pointed at 330 yards. (Per Garmin) Grady held until I got there flushed it, and I didn't shoot it because of the fact that I didn't have a gun... :( Recently dislocated shoulder that's healing.

My little 11 month old pup was 740 on the Garmin. I got her around, and by then it was dark.

Good day though, in my opinion.

I love running dogs at that spot.

Went out after them again this weekend. Got a lot of ground covered with a bunch of dogs down at the same time. Would guess that the dogs all put down around 16-18 miles. The grass was wet and I don't think the PC were moving much.

Could tell the scenting conditions were not great. Three of the dogs are good quail dogs and they had a tough time on the single from a covey we found (not hunting them but letting the dogs work them)

I think one of John's V's got a group of 4 PC pointed, but we didn't get any shots fired.

Pretty sure that I lost about 3 pound with all the walking, that only leaves about 10 to go `

The Kansas flint hills are a beautiful place! Tankerchief and I and the pups didn't have any run ins with prairie chickens, but had plenty of action with the meadowlarks and box turtles. It was fun to get out and explore new countryside.

We hunted on Saturday as well. We have some pretty experienced dog, and hunted an area that should have had some birds. Only had one contact, and no shots. I think that the scenting was pretty poor.
Heck Ace did't point his normal 20 meadowlards while PC hunting

took a trip- dropped in and visited with our KDWP official- suggested an area I might find a PC-
Britt's didn't do so good- pointed from aways away- I am used to them pointing the bird close-

Beautiful picture of the school house. I really enjoy Chase County and travel by that school house quite frequently. I also frequent the Flint Hills Restaurant in Strong City. The waitress knows our order when we walk in the door.

Maynard,

You always find a way too make me hungry....

Nothing fancy around here, just meat and potato folks. If I can find my wife a good chicken fried steak or some fish and chips, she is in good spirits. Get her some beer battered halibut from Alaska and she is in heaven. There used to be a little dining car type cafe here in Dodge called the Coney Island. It happens that both my wife and I frequented the place for their fish basket, but never met. We both still talk of the place and can see and taste that wonderful fish.
