Hawk scream e collar

My father in law is talking about getting a new e collar and is considering getting ne that makes the hawk scream. Just curious is anyone has any experience with these collars. To me it seems more like a gimmick but I have been wrong before.

I love mine. I turn off the run tone because it's annoying and most of the time I know where my dog is. When the dog goes in the tall thick stuff I turn the scream on with the transmitter so if the dog goes on point I know where he is. As far as the hawk scream helping to hold birds or scaring birds I have not noticed a difference. Even on the low volume the beeper is loud so I place duck tape over the speaker.

They are great, only because I know that I'm within a 1/2 mile of a guy whose dog has one on.

Kind of where you are at. If two or more parties are running beepers, I can pick mine out. Most with the hawk cry do have alternatives. I do not believe Tri-Tronics ever made a hawk only.

:D

There, fixed it for you.

:D

Yes sir thank you. That was the most critical part of the response! :)

I guess I don't understand why most hunters agree that even so little as a truck door slamming or talking/instructing a dog in the field will send birds running, but think a screaming collar will freeze a bird up?

Granted, I run flushers, but my success went way up when two falls ago, I took off the little bell I kept on their collars. All that bell did was announce to any bird around that my dog was on its way.

I agree, they are noisy, and bothersome. Buddy of mine had a bell also, we kept taking it off his dog and throwing it away! he kept wondering why his dog kept loosing all those bells. I know that was my bad! That being said I think the screaching is a gimmic and I would not pay extra to get it and if he does decide to but that option, make sure it can be turned off. Dogs ears are pretty sensitive as well, might make the dog deaf!

Correct they do have options.
Bells = annoying! and guys with bells think beepers are annoying.
Constant beeping = annoying! and guys who run this think that bells are annoying.
Beep on Point (provided it can be turned on when needed remotely) = great to have if you've ever had to look for a dog on point in a thicket that is on point.
Beepers should never be used by flushing dog guys.
Rarely does mine get turned on and you'd never know I have it, but is is nice to have.

For pointing dogs, I know of nothing better than a Garmin Astro.
I have done bells, beepers of several kinds, they are all just unneeded noise now.

Totally agree with Ranger Danger on this and use mine similar to him. One other thing I have trained my dogs to know is if beeper is off and want their attention turn on and if on turn off for they know the next thing is a slight shock and havent had to shock them since they were trained to this. As far as the hawk scream dont believe its any better or worse than a regular beep but as stated dont hardly ever use either. Over the years when first had beeper and shock collar combo killed a lot of birds over a point with beeper going off but do now believe the noise does affect birds and dogs hearing some.

I bought one for my dogs, got it home, strapped it on and turned them loose. The noise of that thing was sooo deafening, I pulled it off and got my money back. No way could I do that to my dogs!

I have had a few problems with my Astro this season. Mostly it was me forgetting to have extra batteries, but a couple times it was the Garmin. When it is working though it is a fantastic asset in the field. Much quieter than a beeper as well.

Have you updated the software on the handheld and the collar?
It should be pretty flawless. Keep batteries in it and calibrate the compass and you should be good.

I do this also or use the tone feature on the receiver to get the attention of the dog.

The Astro looks legit and when my current setup goes bad I'm going to go that way. I would really like to know how many miles a dog runs in a day.

I haven't yet but I intend to start using the hawk scream. My dog was scared of it at first - I think because it is so loud and he doesn't know where it's coming from so he gets all confused when he hears it. I need to condition him to that, and then I intend to have it on him just so that I can hit it if I can't see him somewhere I can hit it to find out where he is - and if I'm going to make noise it might as well be one that might make the bird sit a little tighter. I can't imagine leaving it screaming every 10 seconds or whatever - ugh.

Not ripping on yah...but instead of conditioning your pup to something he's already confused about and scared of, why not work on just keeping him at a shorter range so you can find him? Put an orange vest on him and you shouldn't have issues with finding him.

I don't want my pup to work at a shorter range. I'd like him to work a reasonably large area around me, so I can cover more area. As you get into thicker cover and he slams onto a point it doesn't matter what color he's wearing (I generally do use a blaze vest) - you have a heck of a time finding him. Hell, most of the time I am busy looking to my left to find him and here he comes at me from my right.

Like I said - I don't want the constant beep - but I do need to be able to find him if he is on point in thick cover.
