Anyone hearing any quail calling?

Saw a group of 4 as I was headed up Hwy99 yesterday. They were full grown and apparently sitting on the edge of the Hwy to avoid the heavy morning dew. Not sure if there were chicks in the ditch or not as I was only passing by, but it appeared that 2 of the birds were coordinating the crossing of the road as if they had some chicks in tow. I wish I'd pulled over now to see!

Well due to the wind Saturday afternoon at the Ranch in Bison I could hear jack squat:eek:, but I did see a few Roosters and a lot of water in places I haven't see water in years. :D

Wheat was about 8-10 inches tall but my farmer said they got a rain just in time for them to berry out ok. Still no quail heard on my Valley falls farm but did here them on 2 other farms in that area:thumbsup:

Kick'em Up!

I went down to the farm tonight after work. Had to try out my new used tractor.

Made a trip around the place to check how things greened up after all the rain we got the last couple weeks.

But I heard 7 different males whistling tonight. That brought a smile to my face.

So we will see if we get a good hatch. I have a lot more work to do on habitat, but it sounds like I have some birds to start with this spring.

Steve, it's all in the details! Tell me more about the new acquisition and any attachments thereto. If you haven't already started a thread, it may be time.

Kubota MX5100 - 50 hp, 4wd, front loader, 3 pt, pto, 2010 with 121 hours.

Need to get more stuff to go with it, brush hog, disk, quail drill .....

It was a fun night to be down at the farm, quail calling, turkey, deer, .... have not heard the pheasant crowing that I heard about a month ago.

Dang! I've been screwing up! Where do you get your quail seed? No wonder they have been down! :)

Nice start! Start watching the farm sales!

Doing water retrieves with a young lab this morning back at the pond and I heard several quail calling. It sure is nice to hear them. The bobwhite calling and a flock of snows heading south during a fall night are about as "wild" as it comes. I think those that can appreciate those sounds are very blessed.

They have really been whistling around our house the last week or so. I whistle back at them for fun, but I don't think I'm fooling any of them.

I was out twice yesterday at the farm, once in the morning and then again in the evening.

Saw a quail on the gravel road in the morning when the grass was real wet. Also heard several calling.

Ran the dogs again in the evening. Didn't hear as much calling, but did hear some.

Did get a couple of turkeys pointed.

Anyway, don't think that this is likely to be a great season, but it should not the a disaster I thought we might have, unless we get too much bad weather over the next two months.

The moisture is a blessing and may hamper some nesting now, but for the overall outlook it is a brighter then it has been for a long time. It has to start somewhere I guess and yes it may not be that good of a year for bird production, but the light at the end of the tunnel is now in sight. There is going to be cover everywhere, so it is going to be hard to see any advancement in numbers till winter when the start bunching up in the best cover. It should be better then last year as far as numbers go. Bagged birds may be the same. Looking forward to your reports as the summer and fall continues.

I took a good friend and his young V pup down to my place Saturday evening.
As we were driving down the pasture road we saw a pair of quail running ahead of the truck.:)

Not saying it's going to be a good season, but it's good to see some hope.

We saw the first quail brood of the year.
Saw them running in front of the truck this morning, on the pasture road on my place.
I would guess that there was 8-10 little young ones there. They were bigger than I expected, and could fly. :D

Went out to the Jeff Co farms yesterday to fish with the wife and check the trail cams. On the way there I saw a female quail on the side of the road and slowed down to try to get a pic, but she and her brood of four little flyers took off. That made my whole trip.

BTW got some nice pics of doe's with fawns to on my camera and one good one!!:D

Kick!

I saw a chick barely able to fly crossing the road last night. I was only on the backroads for a mile or so when he crossed. I'm sure there were more in the ditch, but I didn't stop.

Today a farmer I work with told me he'd seen 2 different coveys over the w/e; 1 was in his parents shelterbelt and had 7 chicks, the other on the edge of a hay field he "hasn't seen birds in for 10 years or better".

There are a few out there anyway:thumbsup:

I ran down to the farm last night to see how my war on locust was going. I put a serious dent time them.

But I was walking back by the alfalfa field and gave a bob white whistle to see if I would get a response. I had an adult male respond, and then I heard one the sound sort of like a quail but it was kind of squeaky.

Got the bird responding back to me several time, and each time it sounded more like a quail. At the end it a clear higher pitched BW call. Think it was a pretty young male trying to talk to me. Fun night.
