Anyone hearing any quail calling?

I had a pair run across the road in front of me about 3 weeks ago. That is the only ones I have seen or heard. Nothing turkey hunting or fishing. They are basically all but gone in Cherokee county. The last prairie chickens here disappeared around 91. From 1980-1983 we had huntable numbers. Basically extinct now. Have not seen a prairie chicken in this county in over 23 years.

Hey Duck....what part of NE KS are you located?

I grew up in Omaha and have some family in KS.....

Used to hunt around Hiawatha, Mayysville and Seneca back in the 80's and 90's......Then started hunting SEK mid 90's and out west as well....

We had some very good phez and quail numbers in Nebraska.....but I found KS to have better habitat and very friendly folk!

RP

Near Hoyt which is between Topeka and Holton. I hunted the Seneca area a bit in the 90's as well. Used to be decent pheasant hunting in that area, not so much nowadays. Same with the Hiawatha area.

SEK started it's fall from the title of quail mecca about the time you started hunting down there. The late 70's and 80's were absolutely fantastic down there. We would go down there to quail hunt a couple times a year. The conversations during the hunt would be how good the quail hunting used to be down there. LOL

Finally heard one this morning while weeding the garden. It was a ways off but it was sure nice to hear!

Add pasture 2 and 4 to the tally. My buddy from Colorado sent me a picture of a hen and brood of scalies from where he works! The production peak is in the next 3 weeks. Hope it's not a flat line.

Troy is the production peak around here in that time frame? Will they attempt to nest a second time even if their first is sucessful?

Oh and I heard 4-5 different bobs whistling this morning early around the fields. Nice to hear them all!!!

The older histograms that I have put the peak of the quail hatch around June 20 and the peak for pheasants around June 10 in KansasQuail hens will renest after a successful nest though often repeat nests involve the first 1 or 2 males incubating and brooding the first nests with the hen moving on and renesting.

Quail and pheasants both were heard this morning.

Troy is spot on with the males incubating the eggs for quail. I had a trio (1 male and 2 hens in a small 4x3x2ft high. I had the roof and sides in chicken wire with screen over as well and set it in the broam grass. They nested and the male was always on the eggs. I thought I had a weird bird. They hatched 2 clutches on their own.

Sitting on my front porch. (About 16 miles northeast of Pittsburg) and can pick out 3 different whistles in different directions right now.

Aunt was riding horses in grandpas pasture and flushed a pair. We haven't seen any in that oasture in several years.

I take it more as a fluke than anything.

Hearing them more regularly now. Everyday at all times of the day. Hope they lay lots of eggs and hatch bunches of youngins!

I know its early but have seen a pair with eight chicks last two evenings in my garden. put up fence to keep pups off them for a while .

The kids and I were listening to them from our porch tonight. They were in at least three different spots, the way it sounded.

Turtle,

Did you get heavy rain? If so, have you seen the chicks since?

Saw two male bobs and a hen. All full grown. While watching heard one, maybe two, whistling nearby. Thinking rain might have affected nest. We had 4 to 5 inches a week ago.

We have got a lot of rain in the last week. Had not seen the chicks since the rain. Just took the pups out and the quail were in the drive picking grit. The chicks are small sparrow size. Real small sparrow.

enjoying everybody's posts.....we're hearing a few here in IL....hoping for the best. Sure hope the birds in Kansas fair well as well as I'm sure it will be my second home again this season:) Just hope to shake this illness whatever it is that has knocked me down for the last 2 weeks
