Anyone Going for Spring Turkey?

Here in nor cal you dont need tags just a upland game stamp, and can take 3 Tom's in the spring.

These tracks were at 4000ft. elevation mark...got me excited!!!! cant wait...did someone say turkey camp?...yep

I've got some big tom tracks out at one of my deer hunting areas. I'm laying off for another year before I hunt them. Got a few other spot I'm going to hit up for turkeys instead.

Hopefully I get one the first day! I really don't like turkey hunting. I think it's very boring and I have one heck of a time sitting still that long. But, I need a gobbler for my future taxidermy studio.

Good luck to all you other guys heading out this spring:D --1pheas4

I'm disappointed in you sir! There's nothing like working a few big toms in on a beautiful Spring morning with your calls. :D

Now deer hunting, that's a chore! Especially for me last year. It almost felt like work...

LOL......well I would agree with "the toms coming into your morning call" part. That is exciting.:) I just don't have that kind of luck with turkeys tough. I've been hunting an area that might as well be called the INDY 500 of turkey hunting. Last year was the last of it for hunting that area. There's too much pressure and the turkeys are way to alert and smart.

Even my cocky self proclaimed "turkey pro" brother-in-law gave up on them out there:D --1pheas4

Do you have merriams up there? All we have are rios, I was told we have some merriams up a little higher but I've never seen one.

I raise rios for a rancher trying to get some going on his property and they are doing well up there. A guy from nwtf asked if I would raise 200 for them this year, no thanks! Raising 25 a year is already too much.:D

QH, Yep, merriams and rio's up in high elevation.

Merriums were planted back in the 60's I think...rio's just worked there way up from the foothills.

Dropped 2 rio's 2 years ago, saw merriums but couldnt get shot off...there more tan than rio's, easy to tell apart.

Raising 200 turkeys doesnt sound to fun to me either..:(

Maybe Kansas turkeys aren't as smart as they are elsewhere... Last year I got so damn drunk the night before opening day, I fell asleep in the blind the following morning - until this big ole' bastard woke me up flying down to my decoys... As you can tell, I'm still feeling the aftermath of the hangover in the pic.

LOL! Actually I usually drink Pendleton Whisky, bottled in Oregon. It's a blended "Canadian" whisky that beats the hell out of Crown!

Wildcat, LOL, I did that back in my late 20's once, long island ice tea's, looked worse than you, but only did it once.... never did that again, OUCH!!!

Boy I hope I get a big Tom like yours this year...:D

I'm going for my first bird with a bow as well. Took the bow out last spring as well as the fall, but couldn't get a shot. It is tougher than you think to draw a bow in a little dome blind! Good luck to everyone.

Hey CRP - what's that about big snow up by Devil's Tower? I am semi-planning on going to the western Black Hills and possible WY the 2nd week of April. I go there every couple years, but usually later in the season. My brother invited me for the earlier date, and I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to go. Seems to me they get too many big storms the first half of April, and if there's already a bunch of white stuff on the ground, that might make my decision easier - I'll just stay here in CO and chase them! Plenty of toms down south here.

Here in PA, spring gobbler is a big deal. Over the last 10 years there has been a steady increase in population. In spite of this, you would think they would be easier to hunt. (NOT !) I had a friend get me into hunting turkey about 13 years ago. As a result, turkey hunting has turned into an addiction. If only you didn't have to get up at 4:30 AM. Steve

same here in ohio i got started about 8 years ago. its just so cool to wake up on a green morning and go chase them gobblers.

I think the most outstanding aspect of turkey hunting, is when everything is going right and the bird hunts you! When the gobbler is so close, it feels as though he is going to blow your hat off, now that's excitement. :) Steve

Lady Canadian, welcome to the thread and the forum. Good luck stalking turkey Down East.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'll be sure to put up pics when it's all said and done.:)

Old Dominion Gobblers

Virginia is a fine state for taking Spring gobblers. Last year I put a nice bird in my 14 year old son's lap only to see his 20ga non-patterning piece of junk shoot right past the bird. Not this year. I upgraded him last fall to a 12ga. We will pattern the gun next week and then go for it on the youth day, April 2nd. My friend will be filming. I use a slate call - can'r beat the purrs and clucks. :D

Ok so I've never turkey hunted before and even though I know some spots I was real excited about going this year until last night. We were fishing in a cove on the back of the lake when the toms started gobbling. We were in the right spot at the right time to watch 3 toms go to roost! I almost called in sick today to go get one, but they can wait until the weekend.
