Anyone Going for Spring Turkey?

I think the most outstanding aspect of turkey hunting, is when everything is going right and the bird hunts you! When the gobbler is so close, it feels as though he is going to blow your hat off, now that's excitement. :) Steve

Hahah! I know exactly what you mean, what a rush!

Ok so I've never turkey hunted before and even though I know some spots I was real excited about going this year until last night. We were fishing in a cove on the back of the lake when the toms started gobbling. We were in the right spot at the right time to watch 3 toms go to roost! I almost called in sick today to go get one, but they can wait until the weekend.

Good luck sir! Just a warning, you'll probably get the "fever" after your first time. :D

Let us know how those work for you Wildcat. I've seen them in the stores but haven't talked with anyone that's used them. My son in law may try them this year also.
I know he states it on his web site but don't try for the body at all I did and it bounced off and he was missing a 4 inch patch of skin in the breast but did not hurt him.I got pics off my trail cams for over ten days strutting in front of them with his bare spot.

That would be discouraging, but seeing him strut around after the fact should make you feel better. I hope you get another chance with it.

Well I've been out three times so far this year. Got skunked the first two outings, then finally ran into two Jakes I've been seeing on my trail cam most days yesterday evening. Only one was in range, probably 25 yds. The broadhead flew true, but it whizzed right over his head. I blame it on operator error more than anything. I've taken some practice shots into high-density foam, and they've pretty much been dead on with my field points. I'm going to try again tomorrow, and likely Sunday and possibly Monday. If I don't get my birds, I'm breaking out the scatter gun Wednesday for the firearm opener, and I will get my revenge! :D

Boy I hope I get a big Tom like yours this year...:D

You got a nice bird, and probably very similar to the one in my pic from last Spring. He had an 11" beard, and 7/8" spurs, which looks about the size of your bird's spurs. He weighed 25 1/2 lbs., and I imagine yours weighed around the same. Nice work!

Do you plan on mounting the fan and beard on a plaque? I did with mine. Looks good hanging on the wall.

This Should Help Get You Pumped For Opening Day!!!

I'm an old geezer, still can't figure out how to copy & paste a photo on here already opened for viewing - and still got some shine off the frame's glass cover in the pic - but this treasured Eddie Leroy 'Springtime Courtin' painting that hangs on my wall should be enough to get any spring turkey hunter's blood pumping!!! :10sign:

Been a long time, but have witnessed something near this exact same scene in slow-mo & up-close-&-personal afield more times than I can count in the past, sometimes draggin a big ol longbeard home draped over my shoulder afterward...Minus the beautiful eastern wildflower meadow, gonna try our team/tandem best to make the live-magic version of this happen one more time with a UPH bud here in CO on the Sat opener! We'll let ya know how it goes - I best close the basement door & get busy re-practicin my sweet-talk...

P.S. I'm hopin we can get a big ol' Tom-Tom dancer in close enough to watch him quiver & shake AND hear him spit! Those of you who have been privileged to be that close know EXACTLY what I'm talkin about...

Sooty, I have long since been cured of at least 3 things:

Long Island Iced Tea's, Black Velvet, Tequila Poppers and Cigars.:D

But not soon enough! That's four things, not three. LOL. Thanks for the good humor

Well Rooster, we found the roost, saw some birds, and heard some Gobblin' !!!! Those two long beards will meet there match yet!!! Saw lots of wildlife and was good finally to meet up. Let me know when you can break free to hit them again!!!!

@Bleu: THX a million for opening morning & my first close encounter w/CO toms!!! First time I've heard gobbling & seen struttin in 6-7 yrs since I left PA - I had almost forgotten what a rush it is, got the bug now real bad all over again!

I'll call you or PM - broke out the binocs & burned up some gas for a few hrs after you had to leave - Oooh-Ho-Hooh Buddy, did I ever see a ton of birds w/a whole lotta early struttin going on, still not too vocal yet (mostly jakes & hens, but several respectable longbeards)! We're gonna be in the money when things get really heated up in another week or two!!! :10sign:

last week. just prior to the opener...

Hey Olddood! Nice shots you got there. Thanx for sharing.:)

Got one in Southwest WI yesterday at about 8am

26lbs, 1inch spurs, 10.5 inch beard

Me, the Father in law and Grandfather in law all got toms by 9 a.m. Mojo was pretty interested!

Nice group of Toms there Chuckles! I got skunked Tuesday, Wednesday, and this morning. My buddy shot two, but it was his land so he should get pick o' the litter. :D I passed on a few opportunities, but that's okay. There's still plenty of time to snag a longbeard here in KS, and that's what I'm waiting on.

On a side note, I seen the most impressive Jake ever Wednesday. This Jake had a 9" beard easy. He's going to make one hell of an impressive Tom.

Here's a pic of my buddy with one of his birds.

Still waiting on the pic from kscountryboy11 :D
