Anybody tag out yet?

Still a few days left before we can bird hunt. Just wondering if anybody has tagged out on their deer yet? If so, post up some stories and pics. If not,,, any good stories of the one that got away?

My daughter tagged a young doe in the youth season with her new .243, and it was delicious! I'm starting to think young deer are the way to go!

I nearly filled both of my tags on Halloween morning. I had a young buck push some does right by my stand not long after sunrise on Halloween. I was just going to video the little buck with the camera I mounted on my bow, but he turned perfectly broadside at exactly 20 yards and stood there for way too long, and I already had my bow pointed at him so I could video him... Plus I was thinking about how tender and delicious my daughter's young deer was, so I went ahead and let fly. Double-lung shot and he was down on the trail within 50 yards.

Then the does that he had been chasing circled around and one of them stopped in front of my stand broadside at 20 yards. I was thinking, "this is the best possible scenario!" I couldn't believe my luck, thinking I would butcher both deer at the same time. Anyway, it wasn't to be... When I took my shot at the doe, it was across my 2-person stand instead of out the front. The limb on my bow smacked against the shooting rail, sending my arrow into the dirt and the does headed for the hills. :(

So anyway, I've still got an antlerless tag left and will hopefully fill it by this weekend. It will be nice if our venison supply lasts a little longer this year. Seems like we are always out by February.

I hope you all are having good luck, and would love to hear your stories.

I just have never been bitten by the Deer Hunting bug.
But there are a couple bucks running around my place that would be interesting to take.

My SIL has put up a stand, so we will see if he can take one of them.

Toad,

Glad you are putting some venison in the freezer. We haven't tagged a deer in a few years. Those drought years really put a hurting on the deer numbers at the Ponderosa. There are a few showing up now on the trail cameras. A couple decent bucks, but all nocturnal at the moment. Looks like the rut is beginning though so might have some daytime activity soon.

I also know the rut is on by the number of well known hunters showing up in town. Dodge City and about a 50 mile radius seems to be a deer hunting destination. I will admit that there have been some really nice bucks taken locally over the past few years. I doubt that you will see me on Realtree's Monster Bucks, but keep watching.:)

Haven't gad time to go out. Was moving my cows off my grandpas pasture in SEK and looked at the traditional scrape line under my bow stand. Nothing on Saturday night. Went back Sunday morning to move a fencer and a huge scrape had appeared sometime during the night.

10 years ago I was so crazy about pheasant hunting that I thought I'd never waste time deer hunting. But, I tagged along with a couple buddies 5 or 6 years ago and loved it. Still crazy about pheasant hunting, but also love deer hunting. It's so peaceful plus you get many fine meals from a deer.

Been taking my two kids quite a bit with me and even talked the wife into going during muzzleloader season. We shot a nice 9 pointer the second weekend of muzzleloader and then harvested a nice young doe during the early doe rifle season. Been enjoying many fine meals this fall. Both my kids took deer jerky to school for snacks and that was a huge hit with all the kids. My kids (9 year old girl and 6 year old boy) have been helping me clean game for quite some time. It's pretty cool to see those two each grab a leg and get in there and help field dress a deer. They've seen things and smelled things that would make a lot of grown men squirm. Home today with my sick son, got a deer roast in the crock pot, can't wait!

Not yet, Heading out for and extended hunt for Birds and Deer. Taking of Thursday then hunting thru the 16th. May even try to kill me a fall Turkey.

Good Luck Boys!

Good stuff.

Dad and I took a couple does during the early rifle antlerless weekend. I like having the meat in the freezer, but would rather not miss any bird hunting to do so. Will keep my either sex tag with me while chasing birds, have my rifle if needed. If nothing else, I'll take another doe with it in January. Already had some great meals from my deer.

Here are a few of ours earlier in the year still in velvet. These will all get a pass this year except on "cull" buck the needs to go.

While out for upland youth season I saw a nice buck (but not a true wall hanger) in the middle of the day, out in the open, not 50 yards from a highway. Either the rut is going or they have the robo-deer out already.

Anyway, my sons tagged out in youth season so the freezer has plenty of venison. I'll hunt the rifle season after thanksgiving.

I haven't even been out yet... every time I pick a day to go, it's too damn windy to even make the attempt. Going to deer hunt this weekend during the opener... too much traffic for my taste. I'll get out and bird hunt mid week. We've got a few shooters at my buddy's farm, and they're just starting to chase does hard. Hopefully I can fill my tag and move on. If not I'll rotate between deer/bird hunting the remainder of the season.

Haven't shot a deer in a few years due to waiting on the right buck, but getting somewhat tired of not having venison in the freezer. I'll be patient for another month, but have no reservations to putting a few does down if it comes to it. I won't shoot an immature buck. The neighbors do enough of that.

Thanks everybody for the replies, I enjoyed reading them. Please don't get chippy with each other, you guys know this isn't that kind of forum...:D

KSGSP, I think it sounds like we came into deer hunting about the same way. My grandfather and father didn't deer hunt, and I thought I probably never would either. But then a friend loaned me an old rifle 8 or 10 years ago and another friend invited me to hunt his place. I think I got one my second season, and the rest is history... Bought my own bow, my own rifle, more camo, more orange, some treestands...

It's just another fun thing to do. I don't compare it to upland, waterfowl, fishing, golfing, wood cutting, or anything else. It's just one more way to get outdoors, no need to pick a favorite, or rank them because they're ALL good!

I could sit here and say I'll NEVER be a trophy deer hunter, but who knows? Maybe someday I will care about the racks, but for now I just enjoy being up a tree in the Fall and I'm more than happy with whatever deer I get.

I'm impressed that your kids jump right in and help with the field dressing. My 9yo daughter is a little squeamish on that part. She's very eager to help with the preparing and cooking the deer, but just not too keen on the field dressing.

The wind was HOWLING Halloween morning. I thought I might get sick until the sun finally came up. The tree my stand was in was whipping around pretty bad, and I don't think my brain could reconcile the swaying in the dark. Felt like I was drunk and the room was spinning... Luckily the sensation went away after it got light enough and I could see my surroundings better.

Rifle season opened yesterday, but the bucks are still nocturnal.

Maynard I accidently shot one yesterday that looked just like that. Made for an hour season. Oh well:) I will fill the doe tag in January. Was my first deer though, so that was pretty cool. I've gone out a couple of times over the years but this year I was bound and determined. ;) Next year we'll get something bigger.
