why do some of you hunt?

There is just something about being in a field with a good friend or 2 watching the dog work, and seeing him/her freakout when they pick up the scent of whatever scent it is they just fread out about. If a bird gets up great, if not that's cool to.

Cause when I bury a dog,I don't have to think about that day I could have hunted with him and chose to watch football instead.
Pro football ain't worth watchin anymore!!! To those showboating, dancing, cell phone calling sobs that went out there and did their job, like all of us do everyday in the real world, but not for millions of dollars, they can kiss my a--!!! No longer a team sport, just look good doing it! I'll take college ball anyday of the week! Just not when it's time to hunt. Rather spend time watching my kids work the field. That's why God created the hopper.

Seems to me to be most of us, while we enjoy taking a few birds, hunt to spend time with our dogs! I know I do. I have friends in Nebraska and have hunted with them or on their farm since 1989 except when my dog was too old to go for five years. I did not want to hurt her feelings when she was crippled up and getting old , so I stayed home. Then when I got a new dog I started going again. I think it hurt their feelings, and while I understand that, it made me realize that I hunt to watch my dog work and see her enjoyment of what she was bred to do. I can talk and visit with my friends on the phone, but I have to bring my dog to see her having the time of her life, so that is why I go and spend the money to go. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the hunt and the exercise and all, but I love the thought of watching this dog that abides by the house rules and behaves all year long, just get to have a ball for a few days doing what she loves. I nearly burst with pride in seeing our partnership come alive! I do not waste the game and eat the birds, but again I spend the money to have the fruit of that man -dog partnership become a reality.

I found this thread quite, well, please excuse me for being a bit of a sook but well, it is quite moving to me...I share the concensus about being out there in the wilderness, just you, dog, the freezing wind, a bird or two...I feel there is something ancient about the whole process and as is said many times, whether you use the gun or not doesnt really count...

for me some of my greatest memories of hunts were times that we shot very few or no birds (pheasant or waterfowl) at all. i know people that are just miserable no matter who they are with unless limits are shot. for me shooting a bird is just a perk it's nice to enjoy the people, dogs, weather and cover.

Many of the reasons in other posts--

#1 for me: When one of your dogs looks back at you in the field and their eyes, catch yours with the look of "damn this is fun dad" #2 curling up in the evening with a tired dog, many others --way down the list the # birds killed

thanks for all the replies:thumbsup:. i remember the first time i took my kids pheasant hunting. my daughter could get around on the mowed paths but my sons legs weren't much longer than the brushhog stubble:D. i don't remember the birds we shot that day but i do remember the crying fit my son had when i put him back in the truck with my wife and uncle. :D

Because of the love to watch my dog work that is a lab and many duck hunter friends tell me labs arnt bird dogs.
