What kind of hunter are you?

I'm the kind of guy who can wake up on a Thursday morning (I have Fridays off) and decide I'm sick (of work) and I'm going to drive 6hrs north and hunt an area I've never been to before. All I need is my gun, my dogs, a 4wd and my tent trailer, the rest are just details to be sorted out as they come up.

Then there's my dad who can't go anywhere without weeks of planning. He wants to know where (exactly) we are going, what highway we are taking, what we're going to eat every night, where he can crap, well you get the point.

I know my style drives him nuts and his is the same for me. So where do you fit in?

I have hunted with a guy for 20 + years. He is a planner. Always takes forever to load, unload, get ready in the morning. Me I figure as long as I have the dog, a gun, some shells and a credit card I will be ok. Funny thing is as much as he can drive me crazy, if I ever need something when we are gone he seems to always have it.

where i fit in

wow you have a tent trailer that's real fancy compared to this story:thumbsup:. a couple years ago i was going to meet my brother and some friends in s.d. for a few days of hunting. well i was hunting 5 days they were hunting 3 days. myself a well known tight azz decided that i would take my TAURUS to keep the cost of traveling alone down. while making the trip i decided what the heck i'll just sleep a couple nights in it untill the group caught up with me:D. it worked out great i came home with my limit of 15 roosters;).

I don't spend a lot of time planning things out. But I try to have a plan as to where I am going.

But most of my hunts are day trips. Just get the dogs, Astro, gun, vest, boots and wallet in the truck and I am ready.

However, my Montana is coming up, and I need to get my act together better than it is right now.

Always have my destination planned for the first day, after that your guess is as good as mine. I am kinda anal about making sure I have everything packed and some stuff I never use. I know last year in three days 4 days in Kansas I hunted from Salina first day, Smith Center the second, Oakley third, and finished last day around Wellington. Thats how organized I am on where Im going!

I have been known to plan for weeks for a hunt. But some of best hunts I have had are two or three hour hunts that I decided to go on after church instead of watching football.

Plan before season and adjust as opportunities develop or problems arise.

Distance makes a difference, from the days long past when travel was only an option.

If it's more than one hour from the house I'm a stickler on planning and packing. Over night trips are a whole other story.

Very interesting thread. I guess I'm a lot of both. If it's a big trip that we plan months in advanced I refuse to leave the planning to others in my group. I'll even spend hours on Google Earth looking at possible spots. However, I have no problem hopping in my car (not my truck) and driving four hours West for a day trip on a semi whim. It drives me nuts whem my brother in law calls me Thursday night and asks it he should bring anything and what time I'm picking him up.

Good luck on opener Gents

Being German, I've usually had my ducks in a row, just not meticulously down to where I can crap! We all know that the "call" may come when we least expect(Sidenote; ever had a good night of drinking:cheers:, a hardy egg breakfast with coffee in the morning, then go out hunting with the usual allotment of toilet paper in your vest, go once and it's gone? Now you're a mile from your vehicle, the roll in it, and your bowels let you know you better drop you're drawers...NOW!!!
As a kid, my grandpa the plumber, who grew up on a farm, would tell us "you ain't lived untill you wipe your ass with a corncob!"
Needless to say, I lived that day, not only then, but about a half hour later when nature struck the "tird" time. This is a very humbling experience and teaches you to live by the seat of your pants. Now if you see me afield and wonder why I occasionally pick up freshly hulled corn cobs...as Paul Harvey would say..."Now you know the rest of the story" They actually work better than tp, IMO.:D

Re corn cobs: You do know I hope you are supposed to use the red ones first and then a white one to see if more reds are needed! LOL ! That's the way we were taught here. I find a few sheets of paper towel to be better, because I might need to "Blow my nose". Being a Georgia boy where we have more woods and trees, it can be kinda hard to get out of sight out in Kansas and Nebraska for those moments! Don't ask me how I know! Ha, Ha!

I guess thats the nice thing about being 26 and not having anyone to answer to but my dogs.

That and getting up out of bed, and not feeling like you got run over by a truck. lol

If I'm going on a week long hunt or out of state hunt. I like to be prepared, so I plan. Day long hunts I only need gun, shells, phone, vest and keys. Oh and cooler with bottled water, because its still hotter than 7734 down here.:D

i tend to be the only guy in any of my groups to plan everything for everybody like wear we will hunt & what town is closest to our hunts & how to get there... my family never went out of state hunting till i got them going so i guess its my job to plan???

but to be honest i like to plan trips like wear i will be hunting when & in what state & wear & so on i love to pick public land spots & check em out on google earth B4 i get there to save time once we get there & i can just hunt & have 3-4 areas picked out B4 hand that i know have good habitat i dont like to drive to spot to spot to see the areas 1st hand even thow thats the best way to see what the public land has to offer... its always good to have a 2nd-3rd spot picked out as lots of times there will be another group there hunting so we move on to our 2ndary spot...

i dont get the same thrill out of quick day trips & hunts near home so no need to plan really hard for them hunts???

i tend to be a SLEEP IN UR VEHICLE & WAKE UP & HUNT TYPE OF GUY OUT OF A 3-5 DAY HUNT WE MAY GET A ROOM 1 NITE TO WASH UP & REST the old man cant do that style hunt as much any more but we still do...

Dont get me wrong, when I say 6hrs north I had it narrowed down to 2 or 3 counties and several hundred thousand acres of national forrest land to hunt. Thats pretty good planning right? Lol:D

I feel like that every once and a while but its usually after a long night lol. It was over 100 everyday last week but it looks like the heat may have finally broke. I was up around 8000ft yesterday and got my first frosty morning of the year.

So then all the farmers have to plant red and white cobbed corn together or one may end up riding in the back of the truck providing he doesn't offend the dogs. I'm only finding red.
