Troy Smith recieves national recognition

Public Land Manger Troy Smith has received the Kansas 2016 Firebird Award from the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative to recognize his significant contributions to management of Bobwhite quail. Troy manages the Byron Walker Wildlife Area where he has been since 1992. He immediately began a grazing regime on the proporty which he has expanded and refined to incorporate Patch burn Grazing rotations to increase the diversity of habitat for Bobwhites and the many other wildlife species that rely on grasslands. Troy uses the ground that he manages to educate his peers, his constituents, and quail enthusiasts nationwide. By doing so his reach is not limited to the Wildlife Area under his control, but well beyond to other Wildlife Areas and Private holdings to improve the ever decreaseing area devoted to upland bird managemet. Many of you are already aware of the dedication Troy has through this and other venues so I'm sure this award comes as no surprise. Please join me in congratulating Troy on this well deserved award.

I grew up hunting quail in Indiana back when we still had a few birds. Always thought I knew a lot about quail and what they needed. Then I started reading this forum. You guys in Kansas have a contagious passion and the knowledge to go with it. Congrats on the award Troy!

That is a very good assessment of Troy's passion and knowledge of habitat management, that especially benefits quail.

Congratulations Troy, much deserved recognition.

That's outstanding! If only more people who controlled land had even part of Troy's passion for wildlife.
