Speaking of low bird numbers...

That is why I am such a rolly polly guy. Happen to be eating a piece of rhubarb-strawberry pie at the moment.

Awe no you done did it again. Rhubarb pie is my all-time favorite desert. Man I bet that it has been 10 years since I had some. Did not know that Rhubarb grew in KS.

My mom makes rhubarb pie from scratch and does the old way.She uses lard for the crust.

I normally have rhubarb at the ranch headquarters, but it died out this year, another casualty of the drought/heat.

This pie is a surprise. Dillon's had their Private Selection pies on sale and I picked up a cherry and a peach. To my surprise, I cut into the cherry and voila it was rhubarb/strawberry and it is excellent. :10sign: If you are going to be in the neighborhood I will save you a piece, otherwise, it is all mine.

;) Thanks for being willing to share a slice of heaven. But, I did notice it took over ten minutes for your response, so that leaves me to believe that more than one piece of pie is already Gone!

Mother told me not to speak with a full mouth.

Lets see, Cinnamon-Rhubarb Muffins, Rhubarb Salsa, Rhubarb Relish, Minted Rhubarb Soup, Rhubarb Meringue Pie, Rhubarb Shortbread, Rhubarb Upside-down Cake, Cornish Hens with Rhubarb Sauce, and Rhubarb Pork Chop Casserole. And, let us not forget the ever-popular Rhubarb Pickles (pickles???) and Rhubarb Wine. Now, doesn't that make you want to run out and plant an extra row of rhubarb just so you'll have enough?

I don't have all those recipes, but sound yummy.

Can quail be substituted for Cornish Hens in that recipe, oh, I forgot, the bird numbers are low this year, but maybe next year.

I do need to add some rhubarb to my plantings next year, besides what will a few rhubarb plants add to my 5,000 tree/shrub order for next spring?

Will there be a positive response to my quail numbers if I plant rhubarb?

Hahaha, nice! I like the snide quail number insertion! Wait, that sounded dirty.:D

I have never been to Durango, but I want to go one day. I hunt elk near Grand Junction, or should I say, I used to hunt elk near Grand Junction. I hope after the first of the year I can start on my "rusty bucket" list, as I call it, that is all those medical procedures I need to complete to get the rusty old body back in shape to do some "bucket list" items. One item on the bucket list is to get both my sons in elk camp with me.

I will be glad to send you an employment application. Be sure to mark the box, "Rain Dance Certified". My hired hand has a love for the outdoors and wildlife, which is a good thing, except sometimes we spend a little too much time glassing deer or in the past, watching pheasants feed.

Hey if you make it to Pheasant Fest, I will buy some good KC BBQ.

DEAL!!! Also, you can use me being Indian to fulfill any affirmative action needs.

Should be no problem substituting Quail for Cornish Hens. I would think that if the quail do make it to your Rhubarb patch next year, you will have two of the main ingrediants for the "Quail with Rhubarb Sauce" recipe. :D

Your resume is sounding better all the time.

BTW, felt I needed to make some mention of quail, or lack thereof, since that is the theme of the thread. At my place the quail have a chance of rebounding, but as soon as I can I do need to reduce the predator numbers, as right now I have lots of coyotes and a few bobcats.

Some of my other critters are doing pretty well.

Is that a porcupine with the raccoon? Whatever it is...it is eating VERY well!!! Wow:coolpics:

Hahaha, sorry, had to!

Soonerhead,

That porkie is a big one. I certainly have too many of them.

I don't know about the PorkieHead???

I have quite a few fat coon and one seems especially enamored with a trophy rock.

That is pretty cool...I have been to Alaska a couple of times and I saw some porcupines there, but I don't think I've seen them around here. I see guys posting about a dog's face full of quills every now and then. Do ya'll have a lot of them, or are they rare? And what the heck do they eat? Besides baby quail...:D

There quite a few around. First one I remember was in 1958. A coon hunter had a hound tangle with one. We had a dog get into one at the ranch in 1980. My Drahthaar got into one in Meade County in 1999.

As far as what they eat, the only thing I know they eat is bark off tree branches. The stripped bark on the upper limbs of a tree are the telltale sign that there are porcupines here.

Can you hunt them, or eat them or anything? I'm kinda ignorant to the ways of the porcupine, haha. Would probably make a pretty neat mount. Man, at one time, I was primed for some serious varmint hunting...until someone stole my night visiion monocular/scope.:( Sounds like you could have a good time doing some serious varmint hunting around your place if you were ever around there, lol.
