Postseason Weekend fun

Well with the season over, the 2 1/2 month ritual of going hunting with the dogs is over. But that just means that we are not shooting birds.

Today my wife came along with the dogs and I. We put out a couple of pigeons to work on remaining standing after the flush.

Ace is an old pro at cheating when I plant pigeons. You see him running 10ft down wind of where I walked, so he is sure to be first to the bird,

Indy backed at about 40 yards, and my wife got a front row seat.

The next find on a pigeon was Indy, with Ace backing.

With the pigeons all used in STF or pointed, we started to walk around the place to let the dogs get some more running in.

Ace had a nice point on a covey of quail that was all spread out in the hay meadow. I walked in on the point. He was looking out into the short grass, you would never think a bird could have been there, but up they came like popcorn.

But we had a big group of Canada geese flying low over us.

We had walked pretty much all around the ranch and were headed back to the truck when Indy decide to make one more long cast. He went on point at 276 yards up in a little draw on the edge of the property.

Ace generally is not ranging out as far so he was in front of me as we headed for Indy.
I came around some trees to find Ace backing

Then when I got a little farther, there was Indy.

And a pic of them both in frame.

I walked in to flush, and had a hen blow out the end of the draw.

It was a fun day with the family and the dogs.

Looks like fun, Steve. WTG!

I'm a little surprised you weren't digging out the golf clubs this weekend.

Golf will have to wait until I get a better plan on the "Setter and Quail Ranch"

BTW, looked at my game camera photos:
189 pics of 2 sticks blowing in the wind.
136 pics of Blue Jays eating the seed I put down.

But the place is pretty good for turning dogs loose on birds.

FUN! Thanks for sharing the good stuff.:)

great pics! glad to see your out and having fun with your dogs...umm AND your wife..lol I too need to start training...my young dogs steadiness to shot disappeared bout a month ago....I let it slide which I've NEVER done in my life....oh well...its an easy fix. I need to get him ready for his UT NAVHDA test this fall....I'm making a trip to a favorite hunting preserve of mine on Wednesday....I spent all morning today talking to wildlife biologists in Oklahoma trying to make a trip out there for more quail....they talked me out of it....I'm having a hard time letting go of bird season for the year...I know...I'm an addict, I admit it.

Doing a little training is fun for me and the dogs.

My older dog Ace is pretty much fully broke on pigeons, but I have not done a good job of transferring that to quail. Lack of dicipline on my part.

Indy is a year and 1/2 old, and I am pretty sure he could be broke at this age. He has a lot of point in him, but he also has tons of bird drive. So getting him to stay standing after the flush on quail will take some work.

bird dogs

i recognize those dogs, they are the one's in one of my other pieces of outstand ing blogs. they are chihuahua's with a flag tapped to their tail. good show. they will go anywhere for either pigeons or quail.

cheers

That would be fun. Think you would like hunting behind pointing dogs in big open country, it save you a lot of walking :D

Looks like I have 3 coveys of wild quail on the place, a few pheasants around the edges.

Going let the pasture grow this year, so some chest high grass in the fall should hold some pheasants. But we are on the eastern edge of pheasant country here, so it will not be like South Dakota :D

Steve, remind me when I come out to hunt with you to come with two empty slots in the trailer:) I do think one of the best things you can do to improve your property is to learn to make cedar chests mass production!

A friend of mine has a tree saw on a skid steer. There is some work to do, but maybe not as much as it looks in these pictures. Needed some cover to hide the pigeons. But need to get a good number cut down and drying out.

So, when are you heading up this way for work? You have some habitat coaching to do.

Next week I'm headed that way, but only making it about half way, Salina. For some reason they want me to actually attend the division conference.

Hopefully it is not the same skid steer with the tree saw that burned to the ground last week out by my place! Thank goodness we have been getting a little moisture, or it could have been a really ugly grass fire!

I laughed at your 189 pictures of sticks comment! Been there... Right after we bought our place I put out cameras and came back a week later to find the batteries dead in one. Same story, a couple hundred pictures of sticks in the wind...

Get those cedar trees piled up and dried out, and let us all know when the UPH bonfire is scheduled!:D

Toad, got some cedars and hedge trees that need to come down.
Like to get them down and get them piled up a bit to dry. Then next winter when there is some snow on the ground, burn the piles up.

I think I will move the game camera. The dogs have found a covey in the same spot several times in a row. Would like to get some pictures of quail rather than bluejays.

blue jay dogs

what kinda dog do you use back there to hunt blue jays anyway. if you are going to burn the brush when there is snow on the ground, pray tell, where ya going to find the snow. my forecaster isn't that positive but am trying to get pastor john to do some praying, has more incentive now that he just spent some money on a future bird dog

cheers

We did a little post-season dog work ourselves tonight. Half dozen pigeons taken up roost in my old barn's hayloft and were 'messing' on everything. Sent the wife in tonight to get them flying, me and the boy did the shooting. Four of the the six flying rats taken out of commission tonight.

"Dere him is, choot dat pidgun daddy!!!" spelled as closely as he said it as possible-
