Postseason Weekend fun

good point

nice to involve the kid, not sure what the dog is doing but the kid is making a great point though. pigeons are good eating especially if most of the quail and pheasants got away

cheers

Cheesy,
Have you ever tried trapping them so that you can use them for training?
You can get a lot of good training done with pigeons.

The dog was waiting on the flush out of the barn. :)

And no, haven't tried trapping them, just posted on another board that I need to look into it. When I was in high school we'd catch them with dip-nets at night to go work the dogs with.

Any good plans for a trap? Barn is just your stereotypical two story 100 year old red barn with the full hayloft in it. Where to put the trap? In the hayloft, or down on the ground out in front of the barn? My bare garden is right there, might be an idea for a likely visible spot, as they perch overlooking garden prior to going in.

trapping

i have trapped a lot of pigeons but an easier way to get them if they roost low enough to reach with a long handled net is to go in at night and shine a light in their eyes. mostly they will just sit there and you can scoop them off the perch

cheers

what kinda dog do you use back there to hunt blue jays anyway. if you are going to burn the brush when there is snow on the ground, pray tell, where ya going to find the snow. my forecaster isn't that positive but am trying to get pastor john to do some praying, has more incentive now that he just spent some money on a future bird dog

cheers

We have gotten some snow here in January.. But I will leave the cut tree on the ground all summer to let them dry. But wait to burn them when we get some snow, so that I don't burn down the whole state. Dried cedars really burn.

I would guess that GSP is what is used to hunt bluejays, meadowlarks, and other lower birds ;)

Just kidding about the GSP, I have seen at least 2 that were worth feeding

Hedge is pretty good stuff. Personally, if it's big I would cut it for firewood or fence posts. And if it's too small for fence posts, it is probably brushy enough to make some kind of decent cover, right? Seems like a waste to pile it up and put a match to it... But one man's trash is another man's treasure.:D It also makes the best crappie attractors if you sink it in a lake.

Prairie Drifter, what's the word on Osage Orange? I would think it would make pretty decent quail habitat if you lay it down and leave it.

We did a little post-season dog work ourselves tonight. Half dozen pigeons taken up roost in my old barn's hayloft and were 'messing' on everything. Sent the wife in tonight to get them flying, me and the boy did the shooting. Four of the the six flying rats taken out of commission tonight.

"Dere him is, choot dat pidgun daddy!!!" spelled as closely as he said it as possible-

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Great post and pics Cheesy! Looks like the little guy is almost ready to take to the upland fields;)

If you want some, come on out. There are some pretty big hedge trees in the pasture.

pigeon trap

they can be bought, cabela's used to just sell the doors, they are the hardest to make but by looking at theirs you can see what you are up against. i used to hang mine by a rope. if you make one, leave a flat perch big enough in front of the door so they can walk around and get used to it, you can also put the bait on it and inside the cage. i used cracked corn and or plain ol' popped pop corn. they loved it. suspended keeps the trapped pigeons safe from predators. been running my gsp for years looking for bluejays, can't seem to find any though, drought must have got to them

cheers

Thats an interesting method to trap pigeons. Never seen or heard of anyone suspending the trap in the air. What kind of place would you do that? Inside a barn ....

Pigeons are great for training. Having homers is ever better if you don't have a great place to trap them whenever you need them.

trap

yes. i did it in an old barn and also in a barely use warehouse where they were roosting on a beam. wrapped the rope around the beam and suspended the trap setting on a small platform, by tying off the rope you could then just lower the trap and not use a ladder every time, i liked pigeons cause they were cheap, great flyers and tough

cheers

That's a great idea. Last place I was trapping pigeons, I was less then thrilled to get up on that ladder every day to check the traps. :(

Took the dogs out for a run today.

With rain we had earlier in the week, the scenting condtions were really good.

Indy was standing for a long time here. I was trying to get the game camera moved, and it took a while.

I had 850 pics on the game camera, most were of nothing but wind blowing stuff.
But did find a few with something there.

mutt stuff

you just don't know how hard it is for me to be nice but here it is, you ought to be a pretty proud daddy with those dogs

cheers

Took the dogs for a run today and put out a pigeon.

Thought this was a pretty cool pic of Indy with Ace in the background. Checked the game camera, but the post I put it on fell over, no pics .

I had to work most of the day today, but got home with enough time to take the dogs for a run.

I didn't get a picture of the 2 roosters and 5 hens that the dogs got pointed in a plum thicket next to my alfalfa field.

Then a bit later I had Indy on point at 330+ yards and Ace on point at 50 yards at the same time.

Didn't see any quail, but I think this is a quail track coming out from under a plum thicket,

I had to travel for work for a couple of weeks. Been looking forward to taking the dog for a run, checking the game camera, and seeing how the quail faired with the snow. Well the game camera to 3 pictures and the batteries went dead. But the dogs and the quail did fine.

For some reason my Garmin has been loosing signal lately, some of the time a pretty close distances. Indy was at about 250 yards and I lost signal. I kept moving in that direction but didn't see him. Then I got a beep that he was on point. He may have been here for 15 minutes.

Then Ace came in and backed

It was a really big covey, especially for this time of year, between 15- 20 birds. I took a wild shot with the camera and got this bad picture. One of the quail is by the right side of cedar on the left of the picture.

I also found an old roost.
