Platte area observations

I have the mistaken opinion that we hunt whether it's good or bad, I have been rewarded for perservering in bad conditions, terrible weather, and population swings. It's like a member at the duck club said, " I need to kill smething", astounded, after that I discounted him and his philosophy. If it's sparse, site see, learn the country, see the Corn Palace, buy trinkets for the kids, get an eye opener and see the reservations. Come back refreshed, dine on steak, and tell the experience, you left some birds for the next time, you come. If it's hard it's rewarding, if it's easy rather unfullfilling. I say this here all the time, if the easy roosters are you sole measure of success, shoot trap, go to a preserve, or take up golf or billiards.

I confess. I hunted three times in SD last year and the only birds I saw were in the pen in the farmers yard. We went out back at about ten minutes past hunting time each day and fired our weapon a few times in the air. Then it was back inside to poker, drinks and strippers while the farmers kid butchered some of the pen raised birds so we would have some for the freezer. Now I am a little worried because I am afraid my wife is getting suspicious because both times we have ate pheasant she found no pellets. I think this year we will at least have to shoot the birds in the pens ourselves. If anyone on here thinks this sounds like fun, pm me for directions. Anyone?

Pretty much how I saw things this year. Like your formula too. The constant comment that SD is full of released birds is preposterus and those of us who have lived here know better.

I agree as I've lived and hunted in SD for a long long time and I can honestly say I have never shot a pen raised bird that I know of--Oh wait:confused: I did a couple of canned hunts in connection with a PF group--but then I knew that those were MOSTLY pen raised birds.

Pheasant numbers come and go---but I've always found birds to hunt and usally numbers are not down state wide so you can always go somewhere new and find birds--we get spoiled here so it's easy to be down about a year like last year.:(

Now places that hunt big numbers of hunters all season long--no wild bird population can support that--yep you gussed it --Pen raised birds.;)

So i guess ya all should just stay home--us locals will keep the numbers in check--lol:cheers:

i was not saying go to SD for a PAY TO PLAY or canned pen raised pheasant hunt or that that is the only way you will limit out in SD or that i like to hunt young dumb birds or that killing something is my only measure of success...

my point is there are waves of new to SD out of state pheasant hunters every season & after 2-4 wks of a new group hunting the same peace of public land every day them birds find else wear to sleep/live ETC... not that SD dose not have any pheasants left after the season... there is no denying that SD pheasants are the hardest hunted pheasants in the country & extremely hard hunted pheasants are not any fun to hunt... no matter how macho you are its not fun for anybody to be skunked or watch hundreds of pheasants flush wild a mile ahead of you & land on private land...

there are also stories of RESIDENTs of SD hunting around these large PAY TO PLAY operations ditches & shooting PEN RAISED PHEASANTS not to mention again SD brought out all of MNs pen raised pheasants in 2011 it is excepted & releasing pheasants is done every yr in SD not that i agree i would rather walk all day & get skunked then PAY TO PLAY & or hunt PEN RAISED PHEASANTS & i would stay in MN & hunt preserves if i wanted to go the PEN RAISED ROUTE i was just mentioning the mentality of these large groups the head to SD to SHOOT PHEASANTS not HUNT WILD PHEASANTS if they spend big $$$ on a trip to SD they want to shoot birds & guides will make sure they have birds to shoot... again not my thing

to be honest if i wanted to go on a SD vacation i would plan that for the summer not during hunting season but other then turkey pheasants & prairie grouse i really dont want to explore SD been through the state plenty & its reservations NOT FUN "very sad to me" id rather tour MN & spend my $$$ in MN if im just going some place for a nice scenic drive & long un productive walks lol & to go out to eat...

like i said maybe in a few yrs when the doom & gloom in SD passes i mite could make a trip out to SD for pheasant but??? i think MT is in line 1st??? i will be in the heart of SD pheasant country once again this spring & will once again have to dodge all the wild roosters on the roads & will try to find some lands to maybe come back & try in the fall for pheasants???

Small Muensterlander, said that "South Dakota bought all the domestic raised pheasants in Minnesota", wonder if they imported the strippers from there too! Or do they homeraise them.

I have heard that there are no wild strippers in South Dakota they are all pen raised.

The few I have seen there look like they might have rode in with the birds:D. I did come across an interesting strip club in an old barn east of Blunt near the reservation one night  I am no punk, nor am I a small man, but sadly those adventures have passed me by:(

GPS coordinates, please?

After looking at my maps it is east and south of Harrold. I believe around 214th and 34 hwy. Nice place look for the big flashing arrow that say's " strippers no cover" or look for all the trucks with dog boxes in the back.

good one sdjim lol

The opening question they asked was "are those pheasants"--sent them on to Dallas SD for opening weekend job as strippers for the bar there--they were from Detroit as I remmember;)

Oh ya----they pulled off the Hi-way right into the front yard--one sees the darnest things on opening weekend in SD:D

Rain in Platte

Rain--Rain--Rain and now SNOW--had to get lots of rain as it rained all night and turned to snow around noon--just what my fall CRP planting needed--- hope this is the trend for the year.--and another benfit of living on the land--the annual waterfowl migration has stated--just awsome.:thumbsup::)
