Pink Setter Syndrome

Anybody else struggle with Pink Setter Syndrome? I need to get a picture on here for those of you who have never seen it.:D

pink setter syndrome: When a setters tail bleeds while hunting and by the end of the day his sides are pink from the blood.

I have tried putting a bandage on his tail to keep him from beating the wound open in the field but as soon as he dives into a thicket it snags and pulls off and the bleeding begins.

Anyone have a solution?

Thats why the continentals have stub tale. I have seen it many times, I have no solution, it is kind of disconcerting. But those glorious tales on point make it worth it. Seems my old dogs got some kind of callouses that helped, made the hair worn down.

I can only think of one simple solution.

:D I'm just kidding.

My EP suffers from it. After I get home I let whichever dog I take come in the house to relax with me for a bit and the other day I had my oldest EP with me. Well, I thought his tail had quit bleeding but soon found out that it didn't by the blood on the couch and the wall from him jumping around and wagging his tail. Wife wasn't happy but soon smiled when he jumped on her lap for some petting.

Ox's tail will do a little better next year as his coat will be thicker. Ace's first season was pretty pink.

I don't have as much trouble with it except if you are hunting around a lot of plum thicket. That stuff does a number on tails.

But late in the season both my guys have the tips of the tail getting pink now and then. Not a big deal most of the time.

A couple of years ago we painted much of the inside of the house. I had taken Ace out hunting and his tail was getting a little beat up at the end of the season. I gave him a bath to clean him up. His tail had stopped bleeding, until he shook a couple times after his bath. Got blood on the walls and ceiling..... we were not real popular with the wife that night

Ox got blood all over the walls at my in-laws over the holidays. That was real fun to go scrub off. Then he did the same thing in the stairwell at my office. That one was real bad, it looked like someone had blown up a rat with dynamite.

Try some Vet rap on it. It sticky and stays stuck to it's self. You can even get it in orange I believe. Helps the dogs tail stick out in high grass so you can see him/her too.

Put a wrap of duct tape overlapping the hair and the vet wrap. Usually this will get it to stay on most of the day. Kinda a bugger to pull off if doesn't come off on its own

Short of docking the tail I don't know of a fail safe preventative treatment. I rinse with hydrogen peroxide and clean well before giving the tip a shot of EMT gel. Seems to help some.

Ox had that pulled off his tail before we got to the first field today.

Most of my setters did that to boots to. Just pulled sand burrs out with their teeth. Some dogs you can't help, usually the good ones!

A little red on the tail is a badge of honor for a bird dog.

But you do need to make sure that it doesn't get infected.

I have tried everything from the tail guards from gun dog supply to vet wrap, EMT gel, etc. High quality duct tape is the only thing that works, the end of the tail is a little bald at the end of season but no more blood trail from floor to ceiling whenever he gets excited in the house.

With his tail, chest protector (duct tape on the snaps), and Lewiston booties (duct tape securing them on), he looks like duct tape is holding him together...
