Oil Boom in North Dakota destroying wildlife

My Family were pioneer ranchers in Harding Co Dakota Territory and still ranch there generations later. This is a very hard place to scratch out a living.Or, as the lady who runs the Hoover Store (Pop 1) told me last night when we stopped for a beer,"there ain't much "gravy" out here".
The area will never be the same, but I think the majority of the handful who actually live there would say, "I'll take a little prosperity."

I totally agree. It would be nice to discuss stuff like this without it getting nasty. It is funny the nastiness always seems to be from the extreme. We have to go to intelligent name calling. Wow that really helps the situation. The first move is always to blame the reports on the media. I read the story seemed like pretty straight forward reporting to me. The reporter even commented that the oil companies seemed to want to work with the conservation workers. The problem is the greed. We could rape all the land in the United States and it still wouldn't be enough. Maybe we could all conserve a little, I know I could.

There ya have it, if you just choose to turn a blind eye to a problem that is plain as the nose on your face. If all else fails...blame the liberals. Zeb, sorry this is turning political..it's a shame we can't talk about obvious destruction of a great deal of habitat and clean water. That will surly effect many, many species of animals, birds and fish, along with ground water for human consumption. Yet conservatives OUTDOOR folks just choose to except it in the name of capitalism. I just don't understand that kind of thinking. Specially from folks who call themselves hunters. We only have so much ground/water to enjoy for our sport we love. When it's gone..IT'S GONE!! I would like to see it here for my two sons and their children. I think a little past my days on this blue planet.

Ok so this problem is plain as the nose on your face, what do you intend to do about it? If you don't like what people are doing with their private land, buy it and turn it into a Rose Colored Glasses outlet store,or perhaps a Pie In the Sky factory. All else hasn't failed, just placing the blame where it lies, with politicians who worry more about the next election than in formulating a national energy policy.I don't accept dog squat in the name of Capitalism, just in the name of neccessity.

As for my being "extreme" or "conservative",well,I got kicked out of that club for smoking weed at a Buffett concert.

There really is no reason to get nasty about this energy thing. We all know that oil, gas and coal are not going to be replaced by wind, ethanol and the band aid stuff.
Like I said, As far as nature and wildlife, Bakken oil fields have changed all that. Bakken is also well into Montana. Check out Baker, Sidney, Plentywood and even Culbertson:(
Reclaim the land? boy I don't know. It's expanding rapidly and will be for a loooong time.
Pipe lines from the Bakken. go into MN, Billings MT, Casper WY and Denver area CO. Mandan ND has a refinery and is expanding production.
So why not a refinery or two in Western ND?
We sure don't need that pipeline going to the gulf. I know it's a world market, "duh" Man! that would make it to easy for big oil.
IMO

WOW DUDE.......AWESOME. Why do dope smokers think that pot is fashionable? It is a stepping stone drug to worse....hope you do not encourage your kids and grandkids to use it.

Well, I'm going to try and approach this with a little tact..When what a private land owner does, effects things far outside his/her property. Like the aquifer that guarantee's clean safe drinking water for generations to come. When it effects streams and rivers that flow well outside the area, carrying the pollution far from where it originated. Many say they have something to say about it. Isn't it funny when big oil tries to show a person in a commercial how they coincide with nature. They show you the Alaskan pipeline running though spectacular wilderness. Looks so clean and environmentally friendly. Why don't they show you the oil fields of North Dakota or Texas?

Isn't she purdy? My ancestors would roll over in their grave if they seen what had been done to their ranch that they worked so hard to carve out of the prairie.

Well, when I see you all pedaling a bicycle down the Interstate with your gun over your shoulder and dog running along-side on leash,I'll know that you are doing your part to save the World from me and my Toyota's carbon footprint.

Gotta go now, traded a lady a bunch of local veggies for repairing her truck, gonna jump on the Trail 90 and go get them as the Toyota mini-truck is a bit wasteful.

Nope, trying to convince them that getting snockered at happy hour and driving home about the time the youth soccer center empties out is clearly the better choice.

You are right about big oil. The purpose of that pipeline is to make our gas more expensive (shunting surplus oil to world markets) not less.

I fail to see the difference between that and fencerow to fencerow corn production in the name of ethanol. Nice photoshopping BTW.

There ya go, if it goes against your political beliefs..just dismiss it as liberal or Photoshop. Take a drive,....learn something

The difference is plant some grass and a few trees and you couldn't tell that cornfield was ever there in a few short years. An oilfield like that, even after it is abandoned, will be recognized for many a generation with unknown after effects.

If we are allowing that, anywhere, then I hope for the extermination of our society. It is exactly like the oil boom in Pennsylvania in 1870 on. I'll go with out gas. Daniel Boone when up the Missouri River, from Booneville, Mo to the Front range of the rockies at 70+ years old, in a round bottom boat and foot. I figure I'll find some hunting somewhere along the way! We use way to much energy. Our immediate forefathers were born at home, had outdoor plumbing, a well they drilled and protected, wood furnaces, and income of pennies by today's standard. Belief it we were energy self sufficient, without Middle east oil, We had a balanced budget that's To Andy Jackson, our parents lived at home, contributed and were revered, instead of being shuttled of to a nursing home, we had books, newspapers we looked forward to. Then we got merchandising, we got better cars, REA, the phone, and TV. None seemed to be a single blow, none the one which put us on the edge of overwhelming consumerizism. But it was there, and it never stopped. We all desire for our kids to have it "easier than we did", Now I done even think that's possible. Believe or not in the old days, a hundred years ago, people met, got married, had full lives, and were happy. If this is the future, then it's daffted! Say good by to the world you thought you knew, check off the natural resources, remember clean water, air, keep a timeline on species disappearing. How happy are we now?

higher prices really make you think about your decisions/needs vs wants. personally i bought a ford ranger it pulls my small boat around fine and gets me where i want to go. i leave the v10 shut off as much as possible now:thumbsup:. as far as alternative energy goes i think we have to keep trying new ideas. i think some of you are still powered by steam and hot air:rolleyes:. maybe they should try making fuel out of the tobaco plant and give those farmers a break.

Is that all you've got? Fencerow to fencerow corn for ethanol is far worse. That field represents about 0.0001% of ND while corn is far worse.

This is it in the whole state. Big fricking woop. How many sections of fencerow to fencerow corn are there in the prairie states? One of us is certainly letting our politics cloud his judgement and it isn't me.

Uncle...you win:rolleyes:

The area has had an oil boom or two in the past. The wells will not produce forever and the people will leave with it. The bottom line is that we all use oil and I would rather it come from here than buy it from a bunch of people that want us dead.
