looking for a new vest

I need a new hunting vest this year. I want one that holds water for the dogs or has room for it, safari colors (no camo or blaze orange), and hold up to a few years of abuse. I'm tired of buying these cheap ones each year and want somethig nice that will last. I like filsons gear but don't know if they're worth the money. What do you guys think, are they worth it, what do you like and what works for you? Thanks for your thoughts and opinions.

vest

i know nothing about filsons, however pella bird'n lite upland does me right. you can see this vest at cabela's hunting clothing upland vest. it does have int. orange shoulder patches. i like mine alot. hope this helps. put up the link to filsons if you can so i can see what your talking about. thanks:)

Jmac's right on about those pella vests. I tried one for a day and it was nice and light like it says. I still have mine however from about 6 or 7 years ago and it works well especially when it get's cold here. I have a friend who has had a filson and didn't mind it but wasn't sure it was all it was cracked up to be.

I am in search of a good vest also I am still sporting the vest I bought as a fresman in highschool and I'm 33 now so you do the math it has definately earned the retirement but if i dont find one I like i will keep using it

I am going to pick one of these up closer to fall.

Everybody I have talked to that has one loves it and wouldn't trade it for anything else.

I bought a WingWorks strap vest last year. It is an excellent vest of very high quality. I love the two large water bottles, especially early in the year when the weather is warmer. The game bag is real easy to load, something that other strap vest have a problem with. If you get one make sure it has the sternum strap. I only have one complaint about the WingWorks vest. The pockets on my vest are quite narrow. It wasn't a problem until I had to start wearing gloves. Then I had a difficult time getting my hand in and out of the pocket when getting new shells. And I have relatively small hands. I can't imagine someone with large hands being able to use the pockets. I contacted WingWorks last December and they are aware of this problem on some of the vests. The pocket openings are suppose to be 5" x 2.5" and mine measure 4" x 2.5". I was told they would be coming out with some larger pockets this Spring and they would exchange mine. I again contact them in March and was told the new pockets would be available in June. I just contact them again and now they are hoping to have them by the start of the hunting season. I may just have to have them replace the whole vest and hope the pockets on the new one are larger.

Don't get me wrong. This is a great vest. Quality second to none. I like that the weight rides on your hips and not on your shoulders. I bought my vest through Pheasants Forever. It then came with the PF logo on the game bag.

Filson Vest

I have the Filson strap vest. The tin cloth construction is stiff keeping the shells in the pockets when I bend over to pick up a bird. It will last many years. I put the liter water bottle and the dog bowl in the game bag, and there's still room for two or three pheasants. I put the vest belt through my pants belt buckle which keeps the vest from pulling down in back when its weighted down with birds and water. Like you, I got tired of cheap vests which dumped my shells on the ground whenever I bent over.

brit,
ive not had any problems like you discribe with the pella vest . like i stated i a dont know anything about the filson line. please send a link so i can look into filson. i might want to up grade, if they are better. some how i dont think so, my grandmother made me a vest when i was seven if i still fit it, it is better than the pella i use to day. my friends son is still wearing it and that make the vest 42 years. but i cant fit my fat but into it anymore.

Just looked at the WingWorks vest in PF mag and looks nice. I went to a Cabelas upland game and shell belt last year and like having everything around the waist. Might have to get a WingWorks also.

Quilomine works pretty well. Had mine for about eight years and it is still in good shape. It holds plently of water, shells and game. Takers the load off the sholders and places it on your hips.

Filson has a Website

Have not set up links before . . . but Filson has its own web site. A word to the wise about Filson tin cloth: it is very heavy and stiff. I would not want any other hunting garment of mine other than my vest to be made with tin cloth. Tin cloth was designed for loggers I believe.

Vests

Sounds like there has been an underlying concern regarding a high quality hunting vest for years and no one has done the research until now. This is a great way to compare everyones opinions on their personal favorites and the whys of likes and dislikes. All we need now is the price list for a value comparison. Great suggestions and comparisons everyone!!

i have a wing works vest awesome nothing like it, great vest heavy material well made. cant go wrong i looked at every vest i could find and with out a doubt its the best i could find. plus its made in america.

I know it's kinda' against the original post at the beginning of this thread as the gentleman that originally posted was looking for something without the blaze orange, but I thought I'd add my .02 in here.
I use a Camelbak Upland Vest that has a 100-oz hydration bladder on the back, a big game pouch and plenty of room for shells along with two pockets for e-collar remotes. All straps are adjustable and it's as comfortable as I've ever found! It's extremely easy to clean and just begs to be worn when I look at it hanging next to the door. Close enough for me to grab it on the way out!!
