leg cramp remedies

As I've lost over 70 pound due to diet and tons of water, I begin suffering from cramps. A little old lady told me to take a tablespoon of yellow mustard each week. Believe it or not, you can choke it down and best thing...cramps went away.

whatever you try, begin ingesting it 48 hours before you take your first step in the field, it's like any med, you have to have a supply already coursing through your blood stream before the body calls for it...

those little old ladies know their stuff!

I don't have camping issues but have always heard pickle juice also works... Again I'm sure it goes back to the sodium base to regenerate electrolytes.

Ditto on this. I have seen guys drink pickle juice and it seems to work. I would have to be in pretty rough shape to drink the stuff.

I agree Hunter but the problem tends to hit when you're active day-in-and-day-out. At least in my case---I'm losing whatever is needed faster than my body absorbs whatever is needed, then the cramping hits.

This sounds gross:eek:, but when I'm active I'll taste my sweat to see how much salt is in it. If it's salty I know I'm good so I'll just drink more water (alone). If I don't taste salt I know to consume more Kosher salt with a lot of water.

You're right. The does sound gross!

But the "pre-loading" advice is sound. That includes water and electrolytes. Also be sure to warm up your muscles. I know this may sound weird, but I like "high knees," "butt-kickers," and lunges to warm up my legs. And at the end of your hunt (or during) stretch your muscles.

Was told last week to take a spoon full of mustard. Worth a try. I might have to put a hotdog under it.
That is tumeric. I was having huge problems with cramps and was taking potassium as I did not want all that banana sugar. Then I got on the mustard, pickle juice tumeric + potassium and I am virtually cured!

After the walk

This sounds weird but after your day if in a seated position try and relax your leg muscles and shake your legs at a slow rate of speed for as long as you can stand it, avoid flexing your legs or doing any lunging motions. Try and sleep as flat as possible. The leg thing works but is hard to describe on the computer.

Another way to check salt. Your body will tell you if you need it.
Taste a little salt.
If it tastes good. You need it.
If it doesn't. You don't.

My dad struggled with leg cramps and he swore by tonic water. Quinine is the ingredient in tonic water that helps prevent cramps. I also hunt with a gentleman who swears by pickle juice to. If you read the nutrition info in pickles they are loaded with potasium.

Tonic water has lots of sodium in it. The quinine is an anti-malarial. Pickle juice is also loaded with sodium. Pickling is preserving with salt.

It's hard to get used to walking in cattails and the CRP is really thick this year. Walking 3-6 hours a day is hard on older legs. This is the first year I didn't suffer from cramps. Other than the last walk of the day in ND one day, I had no cramps. I was 20 yds from the truck lining up to walk and my left ham started to lock. I limped back to truck and did a palm shot of mustard and chugged half a bottle of Tonic water. Cramp subsided and I finished my walk and limit before sundown. My routine is now a couple of tablespoons of yellow mustard washed down with tonic twice a day. First time in years I've had relief on a consistent basis. Thanks to all who offered remedies.:10sign:

I gave this one a try. It seemed to work for me too. Terrible combo:eek: but you have to do what you have to do. lol

Most of what I would recommend has been said: gatorade already has the salt in it to replace fluids/electrolytes, then also tonic water works because of the qualine in it...my mom was told by her doctor to try for her restless legs while sleeping...worked great! Hydration and stretching. All that walking isn't just easy stuff either so stretching is more important even though most hunters will never stretch...mostly because of self image i'd imagine. My dog gets my water if it's hot out, i'll bring a lot with but if we're running low...the dog gets it...because I have the ability to plan unlike dogs and I hydrate beforehand.

Potassium pills and orange juice. Also as stated above drink a lot of water

Years ago I asked my Doc this very question.. He said go get Potassium, magnesium and calcium pills all over the counter pills and start taking them a day or 2 before you hunt and during your hunt.. Haven't had one since....
