How to make money hunting

What about a tactics section as well such as I like to hunt the waterways backwards. Everyone hunts from the road to the center of the section in walk-in so I mix it up and walk it from the center to the road. Or is this getting a little too personel like giving away your best mushroom spot?

now,
That's going to far...mushrooms are top secert. lol

I had one of those truffle smelling pigs once. The problem was that his tail was too short, he ranged too far, and he always wanted to creep.

My biggest problem truffle hunting was that when the pig did do it right, I could rarely lead them enough!

Did any of you used to watch a show, I can't remember the name right now, but it was set up like a book each time with chapters. He had a setter named Charlie I think and hunted mostly in the western US such as Cali. The guy dressed like he just fell out of the L.L Bean catalog. Very good show with good dog tips and wild birds most of the time I think. Now every show is deer hunting or elk or something like that.

lol....I think your talking about DEZ, "Hunting with Hank". The show is too fake for me too.

There's a book out called "Misery Loves Company: Waterfowling and the Relentless Pursuit of Self-Abuse ". It depicts the reality of hunting. Great for a few laughs I think we all can relate too. Those hunting shows are not real.

Anyway, I met a guy who was making his own hunting show with 4 other guys (investors). They couldn't get it to turn a profit fast enough so he ended up selling his share for $25,000. Most of the $25,000 was just his share of equipment. He did complain a bit about how making the show turned hunting into work. Either way, it seems like good work to me.

I did a little videoing last year on some of my hunts and it was fun, and is fun to watch in the off season. It would be neat if several of us shot video this year and make a DVD of all the different hunters and the different terrain they hunt in. It would help in the learning process on how to hunt different terrain and be fun to watch just ordinary people hunting and enjoying the outdoors.

That my friend is an excellent idea. I am planning to video some hunts this year. It would be enlightening to see how the rest of the world does things.

:):)The nice thing about it, some hunt without dogs, some with, some hunt cut fields, others hunt CRP, some hunt sloughs, etc. It would be interesting to see all types of hunting, with just regular people. I am fairly new to hunting pheasant (5 years) and I hunt thick tall CRP grass. Last year I hunted around Dodge City and it did not have near the tall CRP I was used to hunting, so I was kinda clueless on how to hunt open range type birds. It took a few days to figure out how to get a couple of birds, but it would of been nice to see a video on someone hunt that same type of terrain so I would know what to look for and how to hunt it. Same holds true for people with dogs, last year was the 1st time I hunted with dogs (my dogs), and I had no clue on how to hunt them or what they would do (I did train them, but never had them on wild birds before), so there I was with 2 dogs that never hunted wild birds and me that never hunted behind a dog. They worked out fine and I had a great time. I think if we do this we could have a fun time with it and really make a neat video for all of us to enjoy. I mean you can watch the guys on TV and see all the latest greatest stuff, with perfect dogs and no busted coveys and farm raised birds, or see the REAL American sportsman with his average bred dog go out and do some hunting with friends and family and really have something to watch. I bet there would be some great bloopers too.

Just a thought,

Rod

Years back Harold Ensley would do a few quail or pheasant hunting show along with all his fishing shows.

He hunted around KS in several of them, with people in the area. He did a nice job of showing the good and not so good dog work and shooting :)

I think it must be pretty tough to make a good living in the hunting industry, or we would all be doing it

I've thought about this for hours and hours in my lifetime. If I had any ideas my friend, I'd send you a pm requesting a partnership. Hunt in the winter, find a way to get paid for coaching youth baseball and soccer, do some taxidermy, , guide some fishing trips, let my wife sell flowers and raise upland game birds to sell......that metal detector idea ain't half bad either. Prolly oughtta set your sights on something other than gold while you're hunting in KS;) Who knows, maybe someday they'll have a portable oil detector and a soil analyzer. If you could carry all 3 of those tools w/ you everywhere you go, you might be onto something:D

Oh yeah, you could probably find some fields of the "cash crop" during dove season. Since you have no $ invested, anything you make is pure profit:eek:

Or you could try spilling coffee in your lap at the McDonalds drive-thru...

I was just reading this thread and got a idea for you guys. Have 4 guys to be on screen, then have 1 do waterfowl,1 do big game,1 do upland, and do fur trapping related. Then do each episode with one in each respective fieldof hunting. That way it's different each week...Phil

You guys spoke of it being impossible to do a hunting show without sponsers. Un true I went to a deer hunting festival this past summer (mostly because I got the tickets for free) There while waiting in a line to meet Terry Drury I was standing by a booth that was showing clips from their hunting video. I asked the guy what they do and he explained that they hunt only public land they have no sponsors they do not go to lodges. They did everything freelance. hunted in North Dakota Minnesota Nebraska Kansas and lived and hunted in Wiscosin. He looked to be about the same age as me (22) I got up to meet Terry shook his hand he asked what I like to hunt and looked very disappointed when I said pheasants and ducks. Had to explain that I cut other peoples deer all season so didnt care to have to cut my own. Left him and went back to the other guy. I was excited to meet someone that deer hunted the way i and my friends hunted when I was in high school and put it on video. Their web site is www.whitetailadrnaline.com

I am a hug fan of these guys I am not affiliated with them and am not paid to say anything these guys are the only guys I will buy a deer hutnting video from again. They are the real deal!

I think I am the man for the job. You know the older I get the easier it is to break wind when I don't want to and many times in embarrassing situations. My flatulence problem is getting worse and worse and many times it is quite an explosion. I figure if those 3D seismology crews would string out their sonophones and I would just plop my rear down on the ground I could give them even more shock waves than those big thumpers they employ.

Nice to know I'm not the only one! This has been a huge laugh!

So now we all know why you had to replace your tractor this year. Is that what it means when it says "air-ride seat"?

The old "seat" certainly got a lot of "air".

My hired hand was sure glad to get a different tractor, since he furnished the cushions for the old "seat" from his couch. True story, by the way. I looked at new seat assemblies at the 3i show, but it was going to be a thousand bucks for a seat. Certainly knew the tractor needed a seat and it would double the value of the tractor, but just couldn't part with that kind of money for the old tractor.
