The AAA says the average cost of operating an SUV is 74.9 cents per mile. Multiply that number times your travel to/from and while hunting for your actual cost of travel which is way more than cost of gas.
So far this year about $3000 in gas, licenses, lodging, and food. I'm a public land hunter so no trespass or outfitter fees. Dog food stays the same no matter what. I also wear things til there's nothing left but threads. So my shirts and pants cost me nothing for 3 years and then the 4th years I have to drop a couple hundred in clothes.
Then there's flowers and cards to keep the peace but that's negligible. I pray my SO doesn't see this thread and find out about sandy beach vacations! Y'all are gonna raise the bar higher than I can jump.
I'll say this. I gave up booze and cigarettes 10 years ago to pay for my passion, and we only go out to eat once a month. As has already been said, the memories are priceless and you can't take it with you. I've not yet heard anyone say on their deathbed "I wish I had spent more time working and less time bird hunting..."
A slight "cardiac incident" this year put things in perspective for me. My time here is finite and going faster; I'm going hunting until I stop getting goosebumps every time I see my spaniel flush a pheasant!
Not poor just budget minded. We drive up from TX and LA so we spend that much on gas before we get to SD. Gotta go where the birds are. Our trip runs just under $1,000.00 per hunter and we hunt for 5 days and stay in hotel. We also pay our farmer $75/day per gun.
Last year for a 3 day hunt for my son and I it cost me $1900-$2000. We split the cost of gas, meals, and motel for 4 nights. He paid for his license. I paid for the hunt for both of us at $185/day for each of us, total of $1110. This year I am going with a group for 10 days and I figure it is going to cost me around $2500-$2800 for everything.
