How Much Money Do You Spend

This year will cost me under $100. That includes my license, gas, and shells. I'll only be hunting stocked birds on a WMA though, and my license is free because I'm in the military.

How much money do you think you spend on pheasant hunting in a typical season? Off the top of my head I really don't have a figure for myself. Just thought it was an interesting question, something to give you guys something to think about. Let's leave the cost of new guns out of the equation. Include travel costs (gas, etc.), motels, meals/food, shells, dog expenses, trespass fees and anything else I might have missed. Have fun! :)

Buy far my largest expense is dogs--training equipment-travel-birds-trials----

a month or so in South Dakota cheap by comparison--

wife very good about it 99.9% of time--she does the books and preps the taxes--

after trials in 7 states last year and training in Texas all winter she got a little peeved:--when she brought up the expense--I just asked her what she has wanted to buy she hasn't been able too?--where she has wanted to travel too that she couldn't?--, what she wanted for the house she couldn't afford?

Told her when any of those could be answered in the negative we would discuss it further--

Guess she took me serious--all the women that come buy seem to love her new granite counter tops, floors, bathrooms, etc;, she ordered upon our return home???

Been married 38 years--

Thanks George for reminding me to total up!!! I just did a quick calculation and almost threw up!!!!!!! My 6 day SD trip is about $1900........we eat good and drink better

Money Spent......A LOT
Memories Made....TONS
FUN and FRIENDS.....PRICELESS

That right there sums it up in a nut shell.:10sign::cheers:

If I kept track of the cost, I probably would choke to death. Its only money, and you can't take it with you when your gone.

Only hunted 2 states last year. So I got off a little easier than normal.

SD trip = $550 for me, $1100 split between me and buddy.

CO trips = around $500 most of it gas.

Non hunters always make the comment about how us hunters eat for cheap-free. I am quick to correct them. I spend about $600 a year on elk hunting, that would by some good beef ($600), but we all know thats not what its about.

Well, since I always look back in January or February, and think to myself.....I didn't get to hunt as much as I would have liked, I would say...."NOT ENOUGH"!!!

I don't leave the state to hunt pheasants (can't say the same for other bird species), so that keeps the cost down some. Most of my cost is gas, I buy ammo in bulk, occasionally use a motel when traveling and hunting with friends (and it is cold). Only own one dog, which I find to not be that expensive. I tend to use gear until it wears out, haven't bought a brand new gun in 25 years (have bought a used one or two).

Ammo $50
Gas $500 (doesn't include the other costs of owning and maintaining a truck)
Motels $150
Gear $50
Dog $500 (food, vet, etc)
Total $1250 for about 30 days of pheasant hunting

Fresh air and outdoor excerise: PRICELESS :D

Waaaay too much! Dog, training supplies, vet bills, and gas are the biggies.

But, that trip to a warm sunny place at the end of the season keeps me out of trouble!;)

I am afraid to count..and if my wife ever did count she would be hunting me

(2) new guns $1000.00
Ammo for the season $200
Pre-buy at game farm $700
Other game farm so far $260
Gas about $600 for the year
SD trip #1 about $1000
Trip number around $500

I figure when it's all said and done... around 5k

ALL worth every minute and time spent!

I have a Christmas club account that pays out in Nov. I put $75/month in it. It pays for a trip to Ks. or SD Thanksgiving week and possibly a 3-4 day trip after Christmas. I travel cheap, eat cheap. Most expenses come from dogs and dog related issues. I bought my first gun a year ago. Before then all my guns were handed down to me from G-pa and dad.

I really enjoyed reading this thread. For just my 10 day South Dakota hunt I spend about $800 on gas, $300 on motels, $200 on food, $100 on a license and another $400 on misc (shells, beer, stiches, ect).

The greatest fear of man is if when you die your wife/girlfriend sells your hunting gear for what you told her you bought it for.

Another piece of advice....always tell your signifcant other that the scope came with the rifle.

Hmmm, .... How much do I spend.

Way too much. But, it could be for drugs or other vices. Yeah, that's it, it's an addiction.

Tromp around in the woods, shoot some, tromp around some more. Or, drive cross country for 22+ hours, and, tromp around in a field, shoot some, tromp around some more. Eat too much. Maybe drink all the beers. Drive back, very tired and worn out. Fun, you ask. I would have to reply, "Yep! And, I'm going to do it 'til I can't no more."

I have never kept track how much I spend on a season of hunting if I had to guesstimate, over 1,500 with most of that money going into the gas tank living in the suburbs its a solid 2-3 hour drive to any of my hunting spots ! I need to move ....

Pheasant hunting in SD:

Gas 400
Lodging 500
License 120
Food 100
Shells 100

Spending 7 days with my son and a couple of friends hunting in SD:

PRICELESS!

Last year gas alone was $1200+ That puts the value of the birds at only about $200 ea....What a bargain! I can't have that fun here in GA for any price! We ate out mostly and stayed several nights in a motel , but we mostly camped in a popup camper. Can't wait to go this year I just can't decide where to go. I guess we'll go somewhere even if it is wrong! LOL! I like the friendly people that we have met in the small mom and pop type resturants, and the feeling of just seeing the country, and being away from home. I am blessed to have a wife who is contented to just go along a watch our dog hunt and enjoy herself. I call her on a radio to come get Sadie and me when I get to the other end of the field. Works out pretty well and she likes to go too, but she doesn't walk the fields nor hunt.
