Help, GSP makes a mess

My GSP now 6 months old, is making a huge mess with her dog food. She'll grab what she can, come out to the living room and then chomp her food with food falling out of her mouth, THEN back to the food bowl and does it again. once her food bowl is empty, she will eventually clean the living room floor.

I tried using a baby gate and lock her in there in the kitchen where her food bowl is. She then gets scared of the gate, doesnt eat, wont drink water, whimpers and sits there. Just eyeballing the gate. She creeps to her water watching the gate. I dunno what to do.

I tried!!! what other ways can i do this?

I've never seen a GSP do that but I've seen other house dogs do that. We call them "social" eaters because they want to eat with everyone around. We've had luck by moving the food bowl into the same room that we are in or by moving the food bowl closer to us or to a spot that the dog can see us. Hope it helps.

I have a 6 month old Brittany, and if I were you, I would try feeding him in the kitchen and staying there yourself to keep him from leaving. After a few times, he will learn that he can't leave and you can slowly move away from the area each time and soon he will be conditioned to eat only there when you feed him.

If you free feed him, I would also suggest restricting his diet to a couple of feedings a day, from everything I have read/heard it is healthier for them.

Outside or garage where she cannot see you...hungry dogs will eat; spoiled dogs will "make a mess".

Dog food floor mess...

My current Golden would remove food from the bowl and dump same on the rug, then eat the balance of the little pile - go figure. He's now blind and sticks to the dish. Can you tie him up at the feeding station? Otherwise, feed in the kennel, garage, whatever. I wouldn't allow this to continue, however.

I cant tie HER up. I tried standing just in the kitchen, SHE still goes to the livin room and eat. I tried puttng it in the living room, she still grabs a mouth full, then spill all over the floor. ive been putting HER food bowl up and she cleans the floor then give her the bowl back and does it again.

I told HER that I was about to just feed her when shes outside and that would be the ONLY time she get to eat food but that seems so cruel though bc on the weekends, both me and my wife are home and shes in the house with us.

Oh wait you have a female gsp? If it was a male I wouldn't feed him til he's very hungry. Dogs usually eat best in the evening after a workout.

-just given you a hard time birdman.-

I would not worry about it as she will probably grow out of it. One of my setters would grab a mouthful of food, spit it out on the ground, spread it out with her nose and then eat one piece at a time. Don't remember specifically when she stopped but feeding in the evening after hard day of hunting seemed to eliminate the weird eating routine.

pretty funny story, but of course I only think so cuz it's not my pup that's doing it. I have NO idea how to help. Mine inhales her food. runs over to my feet to be petted while she licks her chops, then runs back to her bowl and licks it a few dozen times before coming back for more pets. Too bad she's not like a kid, so you could just tell her to chew with her mouth closed ;)

I feed my GSP on a large cookie sheet. He cannot get a large mouthful and chases it around the sheet. Might give that a try; could help with keeping the mess in one area.

Birdman I think you are screwed!!! Mine still does that on occasion!!!!! I laughed out loud when I read this!!!! Grab a mouth full then walk in to see what is going on dropping it everywhere!!!!!! They do clean it up though!!!

Im thinking Coots behind all this.

IM gonna re employ my police work and get to the bottom of this.

Im on to you coot. im watching you.

My female shorthair did the same thing for years. It never annoyed me, I just always laughed and wondered what the hell she was thinking. If it does annoy you though, feed her outside.

Place a tennis ball on top of her food or some other object of about equal size. This will slow her down (helps prevent bloat) and will not allow her to get too much in at one time. I bet in just one time she will stay at the dish the whole time and not take food away to eat it. It has always worked for me.

her favorite toy is the tennis ball. she would just take it out. Ive seen the bowls that have a heavy metal ball that stays in there. its not the amount of food she consumes at once, which could lead to bloat, its the amount she brings into the living room and them dumps it and chew what didnt fall out and go back to the bowl.

I( would use an Anglefood Cake Pan with the stem in the middle. Get a small one so the dog food part is not to large........Bob
