Help, GSP makes a mess

I would not worry about it as she will probably grow out of it. One of my setters would grab a mouthful of food, spit it out on the ground, spread it out with her nose and then eat one piece at a time. Don't remember specifically when she stopped but feeding in the evening after hard day of hunting seemed to eliminate the weird eating routine.

I agree:thumbsup:

im feeding Pro Plan puppy chow. Shes under a year old. Im told its best to feed her puppy food til shes a year or abit over a year old.

It all depends on how healthy she is and how bad the problem is. The Pro Plan Performance is an All Life Stages feed. I would switch her to the Performance purely to try and see if it helps to stop her from sowing her food around the house. Otherwise there really isn't a big difference in the puppy and performance in the Pro Plan line in the form of calories or nutrition.

I'm not trying to say your wrong for feeding your dog what you feed her. I was just suggesting that a switch might help her with the problem you are having.

I was not talking about puppy food. I was talking about the Purina Pro Plan Performance Formula. The Performance Formula is an All Life Stages Food. Both foods that you showed are Puppy Food. The first of which is the Large Breed Puppy Formula which is for dogs that will be over 50lbs at maturity and the second, which you feed your dog, is the Chicken and Rice Puppy Formula, which is for all sizes of dogs.

Surf around the Purina Pro Plan's website and check out their different puppy products. Here is a link. http://www.proplan.com/dry-puppy-food/performance-formula/default.aspx It is already set up to show you the different puppy formulas they have available. On the bar on the left just select which food you want to get more info on. Large Breed Puppy and the Performance Formulas are under "Specialized Nutrition," and Chicken and Rice is under "Dry Food Options". You can compare the nutrition analysis and look at the Product Characteristics.

Hope you solve your messy dog issue soon

I didnt know dog food can be the culprit of messy eating. that doesnt make sense.

I was advised to use Purina Pro Plan by the Vet and the Breeder. I asked them a spefic one, they said either Pro Plan performance all large breed of all stage growth (puppy food) or Pro Plan Puppy food. Both are the same price, but my town supplies the Puppy food and not the performance.

I dont think that kind of dog food can be the issue. My other GSP was fed on Diamond puppy food and he still did the same exact thing. There is other members on this board that had the same issue and i dont think they were on the Pro Plan either.

I really think its the dog's not wanting US out of her view so when she go gets a mouth full of food, she wants to be able to see us while she eats. I think its a sense of security really. not food. I think she'll grow out of it.

I don't know about that, My in-laws have a dog that takes a mouthful out of the bowl (at 4yrs old) and drops it on the floor be it in the kitchen next to the bowl or across the house in the living room, must be something about the dish?? I am thinking their problem has to do with the amount fed for him because he is free fed, but there must be something behind it on top of the fact that she wants to be near you.

Mojo sticks to me like glue if we're in the house, except if he has food in front of him, in which case he doesn't give 2 sh*ts where I am, he's eating.

Let us know what ends up working out, I'm definitely curious.

From the day we got our pup we have fed her in her box. We did it so that she would feel comfortable and safe in the box, equating it to a good place to be. Every meal time she races to the box as soon as she hears the bowls clanging together. She sleeps in the box every night and enters on command when we are leaving the house, and is content there.
Try placing a brick in the bowl to keep her from getting a whole mouthful at one time. This may stop her from taking it to the living room to eat.
Or turn the TV off in the living room and on in the kitchen. Maybe she just wants to watch the show!!:D

Try feeding the pup on a cookie sheet . . . makes it difficult for them to grab a mouthful. My pup wolfed his food when I brought him home & a few months of that broke him of that habit. Might work with yours, too. Good luck.

I had one that would eat all his chow, then tote the bowl thru two dog doors and hide it.We were largely humored, but it kinda sucked in the winter.I wish he was still around,I'd gladly dig through a snowbank to find it.

feed her in the crate at certain times only, she will eat it then, and a measured portion.

This.... All of mine eat in thier crates all at the same time. They sit in their crates waiting to eat, eat and then are let to go about their business.
