For all you that doubt the internet scouters...

Bring your dog and gun and i'll fill a thermos. You can keep me blindfolded till we get to the double secret spot.:p

haha, add some dougnuts and your in.

Dang, there's that soapbox again. We cannot simultaneously call for expansion of hunting and the addition of hunters and squirrel away our favorite spots. Everybody has the same damn maps. New guys, lurkers, get out there. It is what I did and what everybody else who didn't get born into this deal did.

Public roosters taste better...

And for those who think I am some kind of naive blue-sky think-the-best-of-everybody guy. Well you're right. I think the best of everybody until proven otherwise. Been that way nigh onto 43 years and plan to continue to do so.
:D
Kinda what I was thinking 30,000 ain't much when you get to the ballot box.

I don't say much about exact locations on line, but I see a paradox in the hyper concern in protecting the identity of walk-in or public accessable property, when the state or states involved are publishing maps, advertising the opportunities and basically laying out the welcome mat for the world. How much scouting does it take? If you hunt exclusively private ground, why does it matter? Presumably, you can control access. I don't particularily appreciate the guy with less than 20 posts who blatantly solicits virtual GPS coordinates to a preferred location, because they are....... from a long way away,.... first time visitors,...... lame,..... blind,...... have an old dog or old partner who needs to get into birds before they/it die. Any of the endless and myriad of sympathetic reasons we should guide them to the promised land. Feel like they should need to work a little harder, pay their dues, enjoy the frustration of scouting dozens of empty locations to find one good one, after a few years of working the territory, learning the people and places, contributing to the forum, they too can enjoy the fruits of the harvest. That's how all of us who were "born into it", did it and still do! As somebody else said it's called hunting..... hunting for a spot to hunt, hunting for a landowner, hunting for a dog friendly motel, a decent place to eat, even hunting for like minded hunting companions. If you want to shoot, not hunt, go to a club, shoot ducks, visit a local preserve or take up golf, I here Florida and Arizona are lovely this time of year.

Amen. As I have said time and again, the real thrill is when the crazy scheme I came up with pays off. That probably says more about the availability of birds than my skill, of course, but wow. Two years ago I drove out to Litchfield, MN with a map, a dog and a Benelli the weekend before deer season.

The (one) bird I brought home meant more to me than any buck I have ever brought down. It made me a lifelong pheasant hunter and at that time, I did not know this forum existed.

I envy all of you who have property with birds but would not trade the work I do for the birds I get for some easier route. I'm not there to kill `em. I'm there for the sun, the grass, the snow, the dogs and the sense of accomplishment. When that doesn't make my day, I'll just go buy chicken...

I think the point that Spence is trying to make is that internet scouting does increase/decrease hunter pressure. I am sure that the massive amounts of reports from SW Kansas about drought, and a lack of birds, had a large impact on hunter numbers in those areas. Sure they can get that info from the KDWP, but it was certainly reinforced on this and oher sites. Did some of those hunters end up not coming, sure, but many ended up going to other areas such as the one I was at. Before the internet, we kansans may read it in a paper, or have a friend/relative in the area we hunt. There is no way you can convince me that the internet does not have an effect on traffic in a potential region. Let me tell you what I experienced in my area, that I have hunted for years, in NW kansas. No I don't hunt public on opening weekend, I would like to, but that topic was already beat to death. There were way too many hunters for fields available, trucks parked in fields, overnight campers on WIHA, hunting fields that were marked off limits for harvesting ( while the combines were in the field), trash. Multiple hunting parties hunting on top of each other. Now you say " why do you care, you were hunting private land". I care because the local farmers view me as one of them, and it WILL EFFECT YOUR FUTURE EFFORTS TO SECURE PRIVATE LAND. It also will effect the states ability to secure WIHA. I know there is no way to stop this completely, but I choose not to participate. I am not a selfish hunter, if someone has been a poster on here I will share what info I have, in a PM, about my hunts in Kansas, SD, and other states. It is not about hogging the game, or excluding others. It is about being a realist and sharing with others who have shared with me. I have worked very hard for my acess, as have others, and I do guard it closely. When hordes of hunters hear a report of good hunting in an area, they will descend on that area and road hunt, tresspass, tear up fences, trash up, and generally change the perspective of many of the local population. Go talk to some of the farmers around some of the hotspots in SD, I have.

Carptom:

After reading your post I have renewed my efforts at cleaning up what those before me left behind.

Thursday's tally: 1 empty chip bag, 3 aluminum cans (two for beer?) And that's just where I parked/walked. Driving there I saw numerous cans, bags, etc. Come on out, enjoy the wild spaces and make them just as filthy and trashed as your city...

I spent the last week in the Hill City area. I met a guy with no dogs, just him and a 16g. BPS. This guy just walked likely spots and shot when he flushed one on his own. We sat down for dinner one nite and I circled every WIHA I went too that week that held birds. He was out there to wash out his mind from all the crap in his daily life, more power to him and I hoped I helped.

I duck hunted on a small island and picked up some pop cans, a coffee cup, empty shell boxes, and about 2 boxes worth of hulls. All of the trash was fresh. What are people thinking?

Yep, I use to hunt in a private blind that was used by several families. You would go in and find exactly what you described. We knew who was the one doing it. Tell the kid doing it to stop. Tell the dad to tell the kid to stop...didn't make a difference. A slob is a slob
