Anyone hearing any quail calling?

Normally this time of year I have quail whistleing around the place. Granted not a ton of them but anywhere from 3-6 males from different locations. Haven't heard a one yet. I sure hope those cold days with deep snow didn't do them in.

I have one nice covey that hardly ever stays on my land but in the spring I usually can hear them calling. Kind of worried. No pheasants left around here anymore or chickens that I have seen. The quail are the last wild gamebird here, ironically.

Heard some in NE KS while turkey hunting two weeks ago.

I think the thirty degree weather put a damper on them. Lately the birds here get up to speed in June. probably need higher temperatures, ironically we need some warm rain too! One without the other won't work. I drove across 24/40 from Topeka, to Kansas City, went out on 92, the wind was unbelievable, Kansas topsoil was heading to Nebraska, sometimes you could not see the road! Unlike the rest of the state, wheat crop looked pretty good, lots of corn sprouts.....but they need rain now.

I heard a couple in the evening right before the cold spell.
We found a lone male running the dogs on Saturday, so I don't think they are cranked up yet.

Saw 2 pairs last week while blading roads. Been hearing some and have had friends comment on the same. Roosters too. Even hearing a rooster from the yard. Then there's the gobblers. Some of those haven't lost their beards yet either!

Heard several around my folks place turkey hunting two weeks ago around Louisburg. There were two nice coveys on their place this past year. Good to know they are still around.

My hired man and I have been changing nozzles on two sprinkler systems and have been hearing some. My ears are shot, but hear some of them. My hired hand tells me about the rest. And some roosters crowing. Doe bedding along the dry creek again. The deer have pretty much been absent the last two years. A couple days of nice gentle rains would be really nice.

Heard very few while turkey hunting this spring, with the weather I'm thinking birds were behind schedule though.

Was fishing Monday morning and heard probably three different bobs singing. Greenwood county.

Still nothing here. I'm worried the cold and snow last winter did my little covey in.

Greenwood county? Guess I'll be headed there opening day this fall! :D;)

I was down at my place yesterday evening. It was a spectacular evening, calm winds. not super hot.

Heard 4 different males whistling. That is a lot more activity than I was hearing a week ago. But I did not hear the rooster phez crowing like I did last week.

It's a pretty big county, and I wasn't on public ground.

maybe it was Marion...or butler...or elk...or lyon...or allen. I get lost out there.;)

Love to hear birds calling.....amazing how something so simple and pure fills the soul and stirs memories of the good old days!

I have been so busy with work and family that I have not ventured to the country for a few hours of bob's whistle. I plan to head out Friday and will report after the weekend...

We had a damn tough winter here in KY as well......and I hope they pulled thru in decent shape.....as we had 2 years of really good numbers / hunting around here. The Kentucky CREP program has been a blessing for quail and the few guys like me that still pursue them.

Cheers,

RP

Still haven't heard any around my place. I hope that snow and cold weather didn't finish off my little covey.

Hey Duck....what part of NE KS are you located?

I grew up in Omaha and have some family in KS.....

Used to hunt around Hiawatha, Mayysville and Seneca back in the 80's and 90's......Then started hunting SEK mid 90's and out west as well....

We had some very good phez and quail numbers in Nebraska.....but I found KS to have better habitat and very friendly folk!
