A senior moment!!!

I'M RELUCTANT TO POST THIS... embarrassing to say the least.

Have been hunting for 56 years and this is a first. Started hunting a field and a bird flushed in front of me. Aim, pull trigger and nothing happens. Move the safety back a forth and everything appears OK. Ten minutes later same scenario; am really frustrated now as I could have had two in the bag.

Safety is working OK, but this time I turn the gun over and...you guessed it - no shells in the gun!! My friends inquired why the malfunction, but was too embarrassed to report the real cause. Jon

Did something similar recently. I got out evrything to hunt let the dog out and started behind her into the field. I was by myself and at least a hundred yards in when I thought , "Did I load the gun?" I'm there with ya buddy! Have done it several times deer hunting as well. I'm 67 years.

I did one better a couple years ago. I got everything ready for a day of hunting with 3 friends, gear was packed, dogs were loaded, etc. We get to our hunting area and I forgot to pack a gun. Still had a good time in the field as the dog handler. :)

Maybe not a senior moment at all but just enthusiasm to get afield.

Something tells me this one is going to take off! I went back and posted my age. Maybe we need to compile this information for stastical purposes.

Zeb, I did the exact same thing a few yrs. back and I am 58. I can't remember exactly when it was, but it has been a while ago. We were hunting about 2 hrs. away from home. Got there, put on our gear, let the dogs out, went for gun and guess what, no gun. My hunting buddie who is about 18 yrs. my senior said: " Boy, If your memory is this bad now, what the hell are you going to be like when you get to be my age?" We laughed like hell and then he handed me his gun. A true friend.

I did the same thing, but was only in my thirties at the time. That's when I realized I am a Dog Guy,not a hunter.

Haven't lived till you've loaded the dogs, the birds, and driven 6 or so miles down the road, when you see the muzzles of the Model 21
Winchester we left on the roof slowing, painstakingly, but inevitably, sliding toward the windshield as we cruise 60 miles an hour down the road. Must have taken 3 more miles to slow down, without jarring it off the roof. Both of us were in or 30's, so we don't even have an excuse! Now in my later 50's, I've nearly driven off without one of my kids. Funny, they make a lot more noise as you drive off than that Winchester did.

Was in a "grab and go" mode leaving the house. Got out to the hunting area, let the dog out, put game bag on, slipped shotgun out of case, reached for shells...I took a 12 gauge gun and 20 gauge shells in the bag. :(

Finally found one 12 gauge shell under the front seat. Stopped another hunter and asked if I could buy a couple of shells from him. He looked at me like I was a recent escapee from the asylum, reached in and gave me two shells, then walked away, shaking his head.

We did get a bird, but that was just Fate egging me on so I'd do dumb things further on.

I check shells first since then. :(

Was in my thirties when Dad came to pick me up for a day of grouse hunting. Loaded the gear, drove and hour and as we're hitting two rut road from pavement I asked if he had grabbed my shotgun that was leaning by the front door. Nope. He laughed like hell and let me stew for a few minutes before telling me "Kid. You're in luck. I brought the single shot 20 gauge along as a spare today. Geez. What are you? 30 something and I'm still whipin your ass?".

senior moments

ok in the spirit of ratting our selves out here goes:thumbsup:. i was hunting some of my favorite public cover ( when central iowa had birds:mad:). a dnr officer pulls up to talk so i pull the shell out of my gun. we talked several minutes and move on. i started into a corner that ALWAYS held a rooster for me. you guessed it one gets up and "CLICK" i forgot to put the shell back in!!!

I tried to Prevent some of this from happening by using a large bin for some of my hobbies. Everything goes in the bin so I dont forget it. For bird hunting, everything is in the bin except my boots and gun. Boots are on top of the bin. The dogs make sure I dont forget them. Im sure you all know that drill.

Coming 64 & been there, done that. Haven't forgotten to load yet but have forgotten to disengage the safety, taken right gun/wrong ammo, and forgotten everything from collapsable dog water bowl to articles of clothing to lunch to a pocket knife at least once each. Life happens. On the plus side, I'll never forget all of the many wonderful dogs, hunts, and experiences! Age does have its advantages . . . plus, we lived "back in the day" . . .

I have lots of senior moments, I just can't remember them.

Just recently I snuck up on about 5,000 Mallards from the dam side of a small reservoir, flushing them I picked out a nice greenhead, dropped so nice. Ducks are everywhere coming and going. Picked out another easy shot right!:) click, pump click, grab for shells, guess what?? Yup 5,000 mallards and 1 shell.:eek:

I really enjoyed that thread! I am still grinning!!
