A man with 20# to lose to get a bird dog

My Name is Josh. I grew up hunting Pheasant and Quail all over south central KS. I had the pleasure of hunting behind 2 of the best GSP's ever to live. They were two of the prettiest solid liver Girls you ever saw. Unfortunately they have both passed away. My good hunting buddy has replaced them, but these two have yet to live up to their predecessors standards.

I have moved all over the world over the past 6 years (Himalayas, California, Branson) but have finally settled down in Manhattan KS. (I have noticed a number of NE KS folks on the site, hope to meet some of you).

Why do I need to lose 20# to get a bird dog? My wife has not been a fan of me getting a second dog (I have a shar-pei, basset hound mix). But a month ago we made a bet. If I lost more weight than her by Sept 5th I could get a bird dog. If she lost more weight than me, we would have a baby.

I think it is a safe bet. :)

Looking forward to meeting you and hopefully meeting your pups too.

welcome to the site and i hope you get the pup but unfortunatelly you are going up against a monster a woman wanting a baby i think it will be a tuff race

Welcome to the site my friend. Yes, there are quite a few of us from around here on this site. Every one of 'em I've met was "good people."

I think you've bit off a bigger chunk than you may think. However, your saving grace will be during the pregnancy. She'll be so pissy no matter what you do, you may as well get the dog and take your chewing during the third tri-mester cuz she's gonna be yellin' at ya anyway and it ain't like she can threaten to withhold (you know what) from ya cuz yain't gettin' it by that point anyhow:D

Enjoy the friendly competition, make baby, buy dog, and post all of your pics to this site (no pics of makin' the baby:rolleyes:)

Welcome and let us all know how this one turns out!!!!

You are on the right track, I have 2 Brittany's. My Doctor claims they are the best thing I ever did. The 3 of us excerise for 30 minutes or more everyday. Mostly just plain walking on my part. With my heart surgery and such, the doc says keep those dogs happy, work with them every day. A while back I was very much over weight. I went a a 20 carb a day diet, my doctor gave me. and with the dogs I lost 47 pounds in 18 months. So it can be done and a dog is a big help. By the way welcome to UPH.......Bob

Welcome,

You know that the baby is going to happen no matter what, Momma has got to be happy. :D

You picked a great place to raise kids, and the bird hunting isn't to bad as well.

I would suggest that you win the bet, agree to the baby, and there is know way she will turn you down on the pup

Welcome and good luck; why not get both? They are just as fun and eventually you can hunt with both of them!

Good luck with your goals. I could stand a to shed a few pounds myself. One main motivation is more energy in the field.

Made me laugh! Welcome aboard. That's a great bet but women have been known to accomplish some amazing things when tasked with a goal...I'd be scared!!!!

all she has to do is says whoops I missed taking the pill no matter how much you loose, but I am sure she is not that way. Just tell her your good about having a baby and you will still loose weight and tell her every baby should have a puppy to grow up with. Both of you win. Glad to have you joining us guys,.

Getting a puppy, having a baby:) easy stuff.
losing weight  Guy has to work at that,
Welcome!

Thanks for all the posts. I am looking forward to meeting some of guys and especially your dogs. I appreciate all your encouragement, although those of you who say I should get both a kid and a puppy must have more energy than me... Training a pup and taking care of a baby at the same time sounds rough. Have any of you succeeded at that? btw as of today I am down 20# since June 1. Still have plenty to lose :)

Sir--I am down over 100 lbs over the past 2.5 years or so....figured I was a shotput from 400 lbs around Christmas of 2008, now around 280. Your problem is that your weight is probably not life threatening like mine was/is, so you probably don't have the urgency I had. I have some thoughts/tips on the topic....mainly, I made up my mind, and my old ways really don't interest me any more. Once I made up my mind, it was a whole new ballgame. Just returned from a 10 mile walk, which is about my daily average. On top of that, and more importantly, I have decided to eat properly, which I now enjoy--hummus and triscuits, low fat string cheese, salads, salmon, whole wheat bread, more proteins in general, less carbs....no fast food, no dessert, light beer, veggies, fruits...we all know what we SHOULD eat, but it isn't as easy or as fun, but it really has become fun.! Good luck to you....get the dog!!!!

That is a heck of a good job, congratulations.
