22 rifles

I helped an old timer do some repairs on his house many years ago-
when done he mentioned he had this old 22 with a broken stock in the closet- "would you like to have it"
so I took the stock off and left the rest with The Olathe Gun Shop to be stripped and reblued-
stripped the finish off the stock, repaired the broken stock
Gun Shop did a nice job
it shoots just fine-
surprising how accurate these old time 22's are- can't see putting a scope on this one- but I'd bet with a good target scope it'd match most anything

Shadow, is that an old Winchester semi-auto with the tube feed in the stock? If so, I had one like it when I was a kid. It only shot .22 shorts so eventually got rid of it and bought a Winchester Model 77 with a clip feed.

Currently the only .22 I have is a Wincheter Model 9422 XTR that I bought back in the 70's. I don't think the gun has fired a box of shells. I looks just like it did the day I took it out of the box. Not a nick or scratch on it. Wonder what it's worth today?

yep- seems Winchester made these in "Galley" guns also- think it was 22 shorts only
no rifling- remember the old days of paying to shoot at small targets at those
your's did have rifling -correct

Made in New Haven, Conn
US of America
Trade Mark
Winchester Model 74- 22 Long Rifle

on barrel

sweet gun-

I don't have the old Winchester like yours anymore. Traded it in about 1960 for a Wincester model 77. Then traded the 77 for the 9422 in the 70's.

thanks-
interesting thing about this- push the button and the whole insides slides right out the back- sure is neat to clean with WD40- only lube it likes
looking down the barrel into a light one would think it had very few rounds fired

compared to my other old 22 this one is whisper quiet

The Best Fix

I have 4 or more, but my favorites are a Rem 241 (the Rem version of Browning, much longer barrel) that I grew up with. Many a jack and cottontail when down, some in a reign of slugs as fast as I could pull the trigger. I learned to shot game on the run with the peep sight.
I have a Ruger 77-22 that is as accurate as anything I have ever seen. Agopher got it out the bedroom just this morning. I have a 10-22 also but the trigger must be set at 10#s. Will get that fixed when I retire.

The best "fix" for the Ruger 10/22 trigger is the Timney trigger. It's a drop in unit. It's much better than trying to make the factory trigger good. But, changing the factory springs with Wolff Springs will help the factory trigger.

Lock and Load! :D

There is so much knowledge on here I need to ask a question!!! Had a Ithica lever action 22 as a youngster and loved it! Has anyone seen these around for sale???? Would love to have one again!!!!

Blue Bijou I had a Gunsmith down the road that had several a few years back. He passed away and estate sale followed. I regret not picking one up. But I did walk away with 5 guns that weekend.

I'll keep my eyes pealed for one.

10/22 trigger? One word: Kidd. Spendy, but they break like glass . . .

I have a Winchester model 1890 with a peep sight. It was my Dad's 22, and his Dad's also. Cool little rifle. This is not a photo of my own rifle, but just one of an 1890.

Mine is like the lower rifle with the short fore end and barrel.

I love the old 1890's. I am going to a pawn auction tonight and they have one I am going to try and buy. It is an old octagon .22 short rifle. As long as the crazies aren't there bidding it up.

They are nice. Yours would probably be the Model 1903 version as described.

Lock and Load! :D

Thanks guys

Actually MG, you got me thinking about that so I went out to the safe. It is a Winchester Model 90. Long barrel, short fore end. Octagon barrel, which I had sleeved. The round barrel that replaced the octagonal long ago apparently is worth something according to the gunsmith that did the job.

Yeah, Dad left me some cool guns. I also have his High Standard Supermatic Citation 22lr pistol. He used to shoot match competitions. What a sweet pistol.

My dad use to have a High Standard Supermatic Trophy Military model 107. As you said, a sweet pistol. The Browning Buck Mark is a outstanding gun that will shoot hand in hand with the High Standard.

An Option

My collector friends tell me that a round barrel on a Model 1890 was an extra cost option. That's probably the reason there is a market for them.

Lock and Load! :D
