1st Annual "Where Should I Hunt" Thread

Haven't been there. Is it pretty bad? :D

I wouldn't have to spend as much time with these grouchy Kansans if some of my fellow Oklahomans would post occassionally... Wait, there may not be anything to post about down here.

We LOVE out-of-staters. No kidding. :) Keep coming to Kansas to hunt. But as other posts have indicated, it's a bad year. As far as this thread goes, I think what happened was there was a post or two from previously unheard of folks whose tone implied it would be a great privilege to have them hunt on your land because of their excellent personal and hunting character, etc., etc.

I know its a bad year...apparently you didn't read the part about I follow all things bird related beginning in the spring. That's why it is nice for those of us who cannot pound the pavement and look for ourselves to just once and awhile hear what people are seeing without them feeling like they are giving up the cure for cancer!!!!

Nothing to post about in the Tahlequah area.

Those that only post when their thinking Fall Hunting, Crap! Who cares.
For You newbies that strike up a bird hunting thread, say in Jan-July want to talk bird hunting.

MAN!! You can only imagine the possibilities.

So, about that "Where should i hunt?" topic. Is anyone able to tell me how the birds are doing in any of these counties: Wallace, Thomas, Smith, Decatur, Norton, Philips, or Smith? Thank you so very much for the help. :)

Locally abundant in spots, scarce in others!

I am a new member of this forum and i just noticed it about week ago. I will admit in excitement for the new season i was all over the internet just looking for anything bird related. When i found this forum it looked like a good group of people to share stories with. After reading this forum I do see how it looks when new people come on right before season. Im not looking for any give me's, or private land. I've said this a million times if you cant knock on a door and talk to a stranger or make friends at the local tavern then you probably dont deserve to be on that land anyway. I have spent a lot of time out in western kansas this summer compared to normal and the private land is in just as bad a shape as private. This year will be tough but every bird you and your dog get will be appreciated that much more.

Great to hear from you and nice post.

The scope of your question seems a bit narrow. You make no mention of Rawlins, Logan, Cheyenne, Gove, Osborn, Rooks, Graham, and Sherman counties. I mean . . . come on! Aren't you serious? ;) In any event, the answer is dealing with loneliness and being damn hot and thirsty.

Get out and hunt and you will find out for yourself. No Obama handouts here.

Haha. :D i can't do that right now. i would, but i can't. i'm not old enough to drive. i hunt with my uncle and dad, and i suppose they could go out, but i'm not going to try to make them. i just figured i could get some help from some of you guys.

And thank you all very much for the information. i'm going to get out and hunt in all of those counties (hopefully), whether the hunting is good or not, but i was just curious.

ANNND this is a reason this thread was started.
I like how people get angry and upset when people DON'T help them. Like it's entitled to them simply by joining this forum.

Spoken just like KDWP or it that the annual direct quote from this year:D:D:D

I think I going to start a dot com biz called Phezlocator.com. $39.99 p/m and I will send pics of birds of Kansas and counties of the birds. I'll make millions or at least Tens of dollars!;)

V-John...you missed the point. NOT looking for help, not looking for hot spots, not even looking for a place to go. We hunt private land, not walk in. we hunt the same areas every year usually with good success. Just looking for sightings in general areas. I.E. Saw some birds on old highway 40 near Quinter. Saw a hen and some chicks north of Salina. Good quail hatch near Perry. Things like that. Like a lot of post suggest, KDWP is not very truthful when it comes to reality. So hearing a glimmer of hope without giving away and trade secrets sometimes is all we look for. I make the trip for one bird or 100. Birds and the hunt isn't the reason I come back every year, it is the excuse. One bird or 100, I make the trip!

I gotcha...

You see, I'm torn. I really am. On one hand, if someone says, "I saw a couple nice coveys "north of Salina" well, a couple things seem to happen. A bunch of guys follow that up with several questions, and it really isn't hard to pin down the spots through a process of elimination.

On the other hand, I understand your predicament as it can be extremely difficult to plan an out of state hunt. Traveling all that way, to hunt is expensive and understandably quite the endeavor. This thread was sarcastic in nature, sure, but at the root of all sarcasm is a bit of truth. I think that there are many people on this board who have been burned as a result. I even think that I have ran my mouth about location too many times before.
Especially in quail situations. Pheasants can be hard to shoot out, but quail, much easier.

Another thing. I personally think that a large part of the problem isn't the guys like you who are asking for general information, but do we know how many unregistered users are reading some of this stuff? I mean, look at how many views this thread has as compared to how many posts...

Just some of my thoughts I suppose. I realize BRD, that you are probably a good dude, and your intentions are good. It sounds like you have a great set up and a great plan. I commend you for coming all this way, and hope you continue to do so. I've been trying to talk my buddy from Pheonixville to come up and hunt, but he keeps coming up with excuses. ;)

See part of my problem is I am half Kansan, my mother was born in Topeka, moved to PA when she was 18. Every summer as a child, our summer vacation was driving to KS. I Bleed jayhawks and chiefs....sorry K-State fans. You have no idea how good you have it there. To even think about a native pheasant here is crazy talk. Deer and turkeys are more abundant there. You think KDWP is screwed up you should see the PGC. I feel the same way about the opener of pheasant there as you all do. 13 years ago I left a 3 week old baby at home and got on a plane to hunt....wife was pissed. Now that baby is hunting with me because KS gives us a place to go. I wont bother with the pen raised state stocked birds that cant even fly around here. I wait for the second Saturday in November and hunt for a day and a half. I see the caravans of vehicles heading west on 70 every Friday before the opener. I see the gatherings at the local churches and watering holes. I am not your "scab" just looking for intel. I am a Kansan mis-placed in PA who cant look out his window and see what you all see. That is my point. I drive through Pheonixville every day on my way to work down Rte 422. Tell your buddy he needs to stop making excuses.

This is a question that will require a lot of research but I have what I think will be a workable solution. I need all the members of this forum to find a state other than Kansas to hunt this year. I plan to deploy 4 self propelled bird population assessment devices. My experience shows these devices work best when all bird hunting activity is conducted outside of a 500 mile radius of their deployment. I will compile the data and report the best places to hunt to you all on February 1, 2014. So if you have been putting off that trip to South Dakota, make this your year. I have heard wise people say that at the end of your life your greatest regret will be what you didn't do, so here's the perfect opportunity for a win-win. You all can go on your "hunt of a lifetime, dream trip" and I will be researching Kansas for you and in the Fall of 2014 you will know exactly where to go.... I promise. :D

Guys my brother has been given a death date by the doctors (he has 3 different STDs) and its the day after opening day, his dying wish is to hunt Kansas on opening day, the last day he'll live. If you guys could help me on where to go, field to field, I'd appreciate it.....for my brother.....and his 7 year old disabled son.....and his 5 month pregnant wife (we're hoping he lives to see this one born, we hope it's actually his kid.) is coming along to film......and my brother has been training a new pup and this would've been his first year to hunt with him, so this will be his first hunt and my brother's last....also, the best field we find we'll be scattering our parents ashes in it (if we can find that cardboard box in the attic). I'm NOT asking for honey holes at all! But if a few members can pm me the best fields they've ever hunted and continually like to hunt, it would mean the world to my family.....oh, and God bless you (can't forget that).

would love to help in any way i can but you know how it is, my girl friend is pissed cause i make her stay home on my hunts and my favorite dog has taken to eating all the birds i shoot, between the queen, my dog and having noting to eat i am at witts end and can't spare the time, good luck though. by the way, you need a permit for the ashes and are required to take a course offered by the fish and game dept. on how to properly spread them.
jim down in colorado springs ain't doing nuthin cause nobody will take him hunting, mite give him a call
cheers
